U.S., Afghanistan agree to security pact ahead of key meeting Posted: 19 Nov 2013 11:21 AM PST The United States said on Tuesday it was still working through details of a security pact with Afghanistan, denying the two countries have agreed on the final text of an agreement that will determine future U.S. troop presence in the country beyond 2014. Afghan spokesman Aimal Faizi said earlier the sides had agreed on a final version of the bilateral security pact that will be submitted to Afghan tribal and political leaders for approval this week. But State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki told reporters: "There are still some final issues that we are working through. We are not there yet." U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry discussed the issue with Afghan President Hamid Karzai by telephone earlier on Tuesday, Psaki added. |

Selfie tops twerk as Oxford's word of the year Posted: 19 Nov 2013 01:22 AM PST Selfie is the 2013 word of the year, Oxford Dictionaries announced Tuesday, edging out some stiff competition from twerk. Usage of the word has increased 17,000 percent over the past 12 months, said Oxford Dictionaries, which publishes the mammoth Oxford English Dictionary (OED), styled as the definitive record of the English language. Selfie is defined as "a photograph that one has taken of oneself, typically one taken with a smartphone or webcam and uploaded to a social media website". In 2013 it evolved from a social media buzzword to mainstream shorthand for a self-portrait photo. |
Fla. judge sets Zimmerman bond on assault charge, forbids weapons Posted: 19 Nov 2013 02:37 PM PST By Barbara Liston SANFORD, Florida (Reuters) - George Zimmerman, who was acquitted last summer in the fatal shooting of unarmed black teenager Trayvon Martin, was released from jail on Tuesday after his arrest for an incident in which he is alleged to have pulled a shotgun on his girlfriend. Zimmerman was released by sheriff's deputies from a jail in Sanford, Florida, after a court hearing in which Seminole County Judge Fred Schott said he found probable cause for Monday's arrest and set bail at $9,000. The judge set January 7 as the date for Zimmerman's next appearance in court on charges stemming from a domestic dispute on Monday, when he allegedly pointed a shotgun at his girlfriend in her central Florida home. He also banned Zimmerman from any travel outside Florida and ordered him to wear an electronic monitoring device for the duration of his release on bond. |
Thousands of Afghan elders to decide if U.S. troops stay or go Posted: 19 Nov 2013 01:29 AM PST By Hamid Shalizi KABUL (Reuters) - Thousands of Afghan tribal and political leaders will gather in the Afghan capital this week to decide whether to allow U.S. troops to stay after the 2014 drawdown of foreign forces. Without an accord on the Bilateral Security Agreement, the United States says it could pull out all of its troops at the end of 2014, leaving Afghanistan's fledgling security forces on their own to fight the Taliban-led insurgency. Security was tight in Kabul ahead of the Loya Jirga, a traditional Afghan grand assembly convened to debate matters of national importance, following a suicide bomb attack outside the tent over the weekend. "The Loya Jirga is crucial for the future of our country," said Farhad Sediqqi, a member of parliament who will attend the assembly. |

"We are looking inside homes, inside basements, particularly in outlying areas," Gianfranco Galaffu, local director of the civil protection agency for the worst affected northern part of the island, told AFP. For now we are taking care of the most acute emergencies," he said, adding that personnel and equipment were being sent in from other parts of Sardinia and mainland Italy. Thousands were displaced by the flooding, said Environment Minister Andrea Orlando. |
