Blockbuster checks out of U.S. retail market Posted: 06 Nov 2013 09:37 AM PST The writing is finally on the wall for Blockbuster: the video rental chain, ubiquitous for years across the US, is finally closing its last 300 retail stores across the country. With that, the company has effectively exited the US retail market — in addition to closing its stores, the company's Netflix-style disc-by-mail service will also be shuttered. "This is not an easy decision, yet consumer demand is clearly moving to digital distribution of video entertainment," said Dish CEO Joseph Clayton in a press release. The online streaming rental service Blockbuster Now will live on, and Dish will retail licensing rights to the Blockbuster brand. Both the retail stores and Blockbuster's disc-by-mail service will be shut down by early January 2014. |

Hypersonic spy plane under development from Lockheed Martin Posted: 06 Nov 2013 04:36 AM PST A new hypersonic spy plane, capable of flying up to six times faster than the speed of sound, is being developed by aerospace giant Lockheed Martin Corp., according to company officials. The new aircraft, known as the SR-72, is the unmanned successor to Lockheed's SR-71 Blackbird, a twin-engine, two-seater, supersonic aircraft that was developed in the 1960s. The hypersonic SR-72 also will be able to fly to any location within an hour, which could be revolutionary for the military, said Brad Leland, Lockheed Martin's program manager for hypersonics. Furthermore, Lockheed is designing the spy plane using existing technology, which could help the company develop a prototype in five or six years for under $1 billion, he added. |

Greenhouse gas volumes reached new high in 2012 - WMO Posted: 06 Nov 2013 04:06 AM PST By Tom Miles GENEVA (Reuters) - Atmospheric volumes of greenhouse gases blamed for climate change hit a new record in 2012, the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) said on Wednesday. "For all these major greenhouse gases the concentrations are reaching once again record levels," WMO Secretary-General Michel Jarraud told a news conference in Geneva at which he presented the U.N. climate agency's annual Greenhouse Gas Bulletin . Jarraud said the accelerating trend was driving climate change, making it harder to keep global warming to within 2 degrees Celsius, a target agreed at a Copenhagen summit in 2009. |

Oldest woman to run in New York marathon dies next day Posted: 05 Nov 2013 01:35 PM PST An American grandmother, who on Sunday was the oldest woman to compete in the New York marathon, died a day later. Joy Johnson from San Jose, California, took just under eight hours to complete the 26.2-mile (42.2km) race through all five boroughs of the biggest city in the United States. "She never really ran to compete, she ran because she loved it," her youngest daughter Diana Boydston told AFP by telephone Tuesday. She made a lot of friends that way all over the world," Boydston said. |
Despite blow-out victory, big obstacles for New York mayor-elect Posted: 06 Nov 2013 12:09 PM PST By Edith Honan NEW YORK (Reuters) - New York City Mayor-elect Bill de Blasio named his transition team and met with outgoing Mayor Michael Bloomberg on Wednesday, a day after he won America's biggest city back for Democrats with a 49-point victory over his Republican rival. Following a campaign in which he promised to address economic inequality and transform police practices, de Blasio promised to create a diverse administration to match New York's ethnic and gender demographics. De Blasio appointed Jennifer Jones Austin and Carl Weisbrod, two long-time civil servants, to lead his transition team as he begins the process of selecting a new police commissioner and schools chancellor and an array of other appointments. |
