Mexico urges masked vigilantes to stand down Posted: 13 Jan 2014 04:29 PM PST Mexico's government on Monday pledged to take control of a violent western state after days of fighting between masked vigilantes and members of one of the country's most powerful drug cartels. Since late last year, vigilante groups in the state of Michoacan have moved deeper into territory controlled by the Knights Templar cartel and they now are converging on Apatzingan, considered one of gang's main strongholds. The vigilantes' advance has raised the risk of a bloody urban battle in Apatzingan. |

Target apologizes for data breach, but vague with details Posted: 13 Jan 2014 09:26 AM PST By Ross Kerber, Phil Wahba and Jim Finkle BOSTON/NEW YORK (Reuters) - Target Corp began a major public relations effort on Monday to apologize to customers for an unprecedented cyber attack on its network, but the No. 3 U.S. retailer was vague in providing details about what it knew and when. The company has so far disclosed that the breach started in late November and lasted 19 days over the peak holiday shopping season, resulting in the theft of about 40 million credit card records and 70 million other records containing customer data. Target is trying to woo back customers after sales dropped off at the end of the holiday season. Its campaign included full-page newspaper advertisements on Monday apologizing for the attack and the first interview since the breach by chief executive Gregg Steinhafel. |

Supreme Court casts skeptical eye on Obama's appointment power Posted: 13 Jan 2014 03:07 PM PST By Lawrence Hurley WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. Supreme Court signaled a willingness on Monday to rein in President Barack Obama's power to temporarily fill senior government posts without the Senate's approval, a move that would curb his ability to bypass a gridlocked Congress. Most of the nine justices expressed skepticism, during 90 minutes of oral arguments, about so-called recess appointments Obama made to the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) in 2012. The court is expected to issue a ruling in the case by June that has the potential to shift the balance of power between the White House and the Senate. While both are now controlled by Democrats, Republicans hope to win control of the Senate in congressional mid-term elections in November. |

Pope condemns abortion as sign of 'throwaway culture' Posted: 13 Jan 2014 07:58 AM PST Pope Francis on Monday issued his strongest condemnation yet of abortion, calling it a symptom of a "throwaway culture" that placed too little value on human life. The pope, who has focused more on social issues such as poverty than on abortion since becoming pontiff in March, said it was "frightful" to think about the early termination of pregnancy. Francis made the remarks in a wide-ranging speech to the Vatican diplomatic corps in which he condemned violence in Syria and other flashpoints around the world, saying peace was threatened by "every denial of human dignity". "We cannot be indifferent to those suffering from hunger, especially children, when we think of how much food is wasted every day in many parts of the world immersed in what I have often termed 'the throwaway culture'," the pope said. |
