Miss. Tea Party official dead in apparent suicide Posted: 27 Jun 2014 02:16 PM PDT A prominent lawyer and leader of the Mississippi Tea Party, who was arrested in connection with photos posted online of U.S. Senator Thad Cochran's bedridden wife, died on Friday of an apparent suicide, the man's attorney said. Mark Mayfield, 57, was a founding member of the state's Tea Party and had served as its vice chairman, the organization said. "This is a terrible tragedy that shouldn't have happened," Mayfield's lawyer and brother-in-law, John Reeves, told Reuters. Mayfield was found lying on the floor of a garage storage room with a single gunshot wound to his head, according to the police department in Ridgeland, Mississippi. Mayfield's death comes after state Senator Chris McDaniel, who had the backing of conservative Tea Party groups, lost a bitterly contested primary runoff against Cochran on Tuesday for the Republican Senate nomination. |

Miss Delaware loses crown for being a few months too old Posted: 27 Jun 2014 04:35 PM PDT A beauty contest winner, stripped of her crown as Miss Delaware due to age, said on Friday she had done nothing wrong and wants to be allowed to compete in the Miss America pageant even though she will turn 25 this year. Amanda Longacre said she learned on Tuesday that she had been disqualified because the Miss Delaware pageant determined that she had violated the age requirement. On NBC's "Today" show on Friday, a tearful Longacre said she was consulting a lawyer. Pageant rules require Miss Delaware contestants to be no older than 24 and they cannot turn 25 before the end of the year. |

Living in "total fear" of Boko Haram in Cameroon's north Posted: 27 Jun 2014 01:57 AM PDT By Tansa Musa AMCHIDE Cameroon (Reuters) - An iron bar balanced between two metal poles is the only barrier between Cameroon and Nigeria in this dusty corner of the Sahel. As the threat of Nigeria's Boko Haram militant group increasingly looms over Cameroon, its government has dispatched over 1,000 troops and heavy armour to the north. "We are living here in total fear because you don't know if your next-door neighbour is Boko Haram. They can host a Boko Haram suspect and they will not alert anyone even if they know what he is," he added. |
