Missouri woman gets life for killing husband 4 decades ago Posted: 25 Aug 2014 04:21 PM PDT An elderly Missouri woman convicted of killing her husband four decades ago and burying his body in an abandoned Wyoming gold mine was sentenced to life in prison by a Wyoming judge on Monday, a prosecutor said. Laramie County District Attorney Scott Homar had sought a minimum of 20 years in prison for Alice Uden, 75, of Chadwick, Missouri, while her lawyer argued for a suspended sentence that would see her get probation. Uden, who ultimately remarried and was living quietly in Missouri when she was arrested a year ago, was found guilty in May of second-degree murder in the shooting death in Wyoming in 1974 or 1975 of Ronald Holtz. She was arrested alongside her second husband, Gerald Uden, who was himself convicted last year of the 1980 killing of his ex-wife and her two young sons, and sentenced to life in prison. |

Deal reached to end deadly Brazil prison riot that saw beheadings Posted: 25 Aug 2014 02:09 PM PDT Brazilian authorities reached a deal with rioting prisoners Monday who killed four fellow inmates, beheading two of them, and held two guards hostage. Elson Faxina, a spokesman for the Parana state attorney's office, said an agreement was signed to end the uprising at the Cascavel city correctional facility and that prisoners were currently being transferred to another jail. |
Ala. couple charged with rape in bid to impregnate underage girl Posted: 25 Aug 2014 02:18 PM PDT An Alabama couple has been charged with raping a 17-year-old relative multiple times in an unsuccessful attempt to impregnate her so they could keep the baby, prosecutors said Monday. Jeremy and Amanda Swann, both 29-year-old residents of Jones, about 40 miles northwest of Montgomery, were arrested on Thursday and have been charged with first-degree rape, Selma-based Assistant District Attorney Elliott Lipinsky said. "It's extremely disturbing," said Lipinsky, who is prosecuting the case. "We're not going to stop until we can ensure that the victim gets some sort of justice." The couple was arraigned on Monday and ordered held on $500,000 bond each, said Lipinsky. |

At least 400 Florida beachgoers stung by jellyfish Posted: 25 Aug 2014 11:15 AM PDT Jellyfish stung at least 400 Florida beachgoers over the weekend, prompting lifeguards to raise purple flags warning of hazardous marine life off the state's east coast, authorities said on Monday. All you can see are the ones on shore," said Volusia County Beach Safety Captain Tammy Marris. Jellyfish stings can be dangerous or fatal in rare cases in which the victim is severely allergic to the venom. Marris said the size of the swarm and number of people stung are not unusual, adding that it is hard for beachgoers to predict when the jellyfish will wash towards shore. |

US survey highlights mistrust of police Posted: 25 Aug 2014 04:53 PM PDT A survey laid bare the distrust the public harbors toward police in the United States on Monday, the same day a funeral was held for a black teenager shot dead by a white policeman. The fatal August 9 shooting in Ferguson, Missouri of unarmed 18-year-old Michael Brown has reignited fierce debate about relations between police and African Americans, and police tactics. The USA Today/Pew Research Center Poll found that 65 percent of respondents said police did "only a fair" or a poor job in holding police officers accountable when misconduct occurs, compared with 30 percent who say they do an excellent or good job. There was an even split when asked if police departments nationwide do a good job in protecting people from crime. |
Top architect Hadid's defamation lawsuit prompts retraction Posted: 25 Aug 2014 04:50 PM PDT By Jonathan Stempel NEW YORK (Reuters) - A well-known architecture critic has retracted a portion of a recent book review that Pritzker prize-winning-architect Zaha Hadid claimed in a lawsuit had defamed her. Hadid sued Martin Filler and the New York Review of Books last Thursday in New York state court, claiming that Filler's June 5 review improperly called her reputation into question and falsely implied her indifference to alleged difficult working conditions of migrant workers on big Middle East construction projects. The Iraqi-born Hadid, who is a British citizen, objected in particular to a passage that she said was taken out of context, in which Filler said she showed no concern for an "estimated one thousand laborers who have perished" while building the Al Wakrah stadium she designed for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. |
Australia's Qantas, Virgin allow smartphones throughout flights Posted: 25 Aug 2014 04:48 PM PDT Australian airlines Qantas Airways Ltd and Virgin Australia Holdings Ltd said passengers can use smartphones and tablets throughout flights from Tuesday after a regulator relaxed a ban on electronic devices on planes. The airlines said they would start letting passengers use personal electronic devices for the duration of their flight after Australia's Civil Aviation Safety Authority followed a similar ruling from the U.S. |

LG teases its Moto 360 ‘killer’ Posted: 25 Aug 2014 04:45 PM PDT It looks like LG has taken notice of the hype being generated by the Moto 360's gorgeous design. Per Engadget, LG this weekend released an official teaser video for a new smartwatch that shows the outlines of a smartwatch with a round face that looks at first glance to be very similar to the one used in Motorola's upcoming smartwatch. As you can see in the video, LG is teasing us with rapid-fire images of different aspects of the new watch, which will be officially unveiled next week at IFA 2014. This new device comes just months after LG took the wraps off its first-generation G Watch, which featured a square display and apparently didn't generate nearly as much positive buzz |

Redskins safety Meriweather banned for two games Posted: 25 Aug 2014 04:42 PM PDT Washington Redskins safety Brandon Meriweather was suspended for two games by the National Football League on Monday for the hit he inflicted on Baltimore receiver Torrey Smith in a pre-season match. The league banished Meriweather for a helmet-to-helmet blow delivered in the second quarter of Baltimore's 23-17 victory over the visiting Redskins on Saturday. Meriweather was suspended for two games last year for a hit on Chicago Bears receiver Brandon Marshall, but had the ban reduced to a single game on appeal. The league has also fined Meriweather five times for illegal hits to defenseless players. |
Posted: 25 Aug 2014 04:34 PM PDT A hurting Andy Murray survived a scare in his US Opener on Monday, holding on for a four-set victory over Robin Haase. Murray defeated the 70th-ranked Dutchman 6-3, 7-6 (8/6), 1-6, 7-5, but was at a loss to explain the painful cramp that struck without warning -- and could have cost him the match. The 27-year-old, who won the US Open in 2012, said he arrived at Flushing Meadows fitter than he has been for any Grand Slam of the year. With two-time defending champion Serena Williams and five-time champion Roger Federer not playing until Tuesday, reigning Wimbledon champion Novak Djokovic and French Open winner Maria Sharapova headlined the opening night. |

UN expert condemns 'appalling' abuse of Tanzania albinos Posted: 25 Aug 2014 04:27 PM PDT A UN expert Monday condemned the abuse of young albinos in government care centres in Tanzania, a country where many are killed and their body parts sold as lucky charms. At least 74 albinos have been murdered in the east African country since 2000. After a spike in killings in 2009, the government placed youngsters in children's homes in a desperate effort to defend them, Alicia Londono, of the UN human rights office, told reporters. "It was a protective measure, and welcome at the beginning," said Londono, who has just returned from an inspection tour in Tanzania. |
