Oil leaked into Hudson River after fire at nuclear reactor near NYC Posted: 10 May 2015 01:08 PM PDT (Reuters) - Oil leaked into the Hudson River on Sunday after a transformer fire and explosion a day earlier at the Indian Point nuclear plant north of New York City, and Governor Andrew Cuomo said he was concerned about environmental damage. The governor, who in the past has called for the plant to be shut down because of its proximity to densely populated New York City, also visited the plant on Saturday. When the transformer exploded, it released oil into a holding tank, which then overflowed, sending oil onto the ground and into the river, Cuomo told reporters on Sunday after he was briefed by emergency and plant officials. He said crews were working to contain and clean up the oil spill but it was not clear yet how much oil had been released. |
Prosecutor to announce decision on Wisconsin police shooting Posted: 10 May 2015 02:10 PM PDT By Mary Reardon MADISON, Wis. (Reuters) - A county prosecutor will announce on Tuesday whether a Madison, Wisconsin police officer will face charges in the fatal shooting of a 19-year-old man whose death has touched off protests in the state capital. The shooting of Tony Robinson Jr., who was biracial, was the latest in a string of incidents involving use of lethal force by law enforcement, particularly against young black men, that led to nationwide demonstrations and renewed debate over police brutality and racism. Madison police have said that Officer Matt Kenny was responding to reports that a man who had battered someone was dodging traffic in the street on March 6 when he encountered Robinson. Dane County District Attorney Ismael Ozanne, who has said that he would give 24-hours notice before making public his decision on whether to charge Kenny criminally, said on Sunday that he would make the announcement on Tuesday. |
Hail, snow, flooding, a tornado and a tropical storm for Mother's Day Posted: 10 May 2015 04:23 PM PDT By Harriet McLeod and Todd Epp CHARLESTON, S.C./SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (Reuters) - Hail, snow, flooding, a tornado and a tropical storm made it a "severe weather" Mother's Day in much of the center of the United States and on the Carolina coast on Sunday. Rescue helicopters in Denton County, Texas pulled six people out of homes after thunderstorms dumped heavy rain in the area. In the town of Krum in northern Texas, Hickory Creek flooded, sweeping away cars. "No injuries, that's the most important thing," Sergeant Lonny Haschel of the Texas Highway Patrol told CNN. |
