Tennessee suspect texted friend link to Islamic verse before attack Posted: 18 Jul 2015 03:21 PM PDT By Richard Valdmanis CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (Reuters) - Hours before the Tennessee shooting that killed five U.S. servicemen, the suspected gunman texted his close friend a link to a long Islamic verse that included the line: "Whosoever shows enmity to a friend of Mine, then I have declared war against him." His friend thought nothing of it at the time, but now wonders if it was a clue to Thursday's rampage in Chattanooga, which has re-ignited concerns about the radicalization of young Muslim men. The suspect, Mohammod Youssuf Abdulazeez, a 24-year-old Kuwaiti-born naturalized U.S. citizen, was killed in a gunfight with police. While a firm connection between the suspect and radical Islam has not been established, the shooting follows a series of attacks or thwarted attacks in the United States and other countries by Muslims claiming to be inspired by Islamic State or other militant groups. |

California brush fire forces evacuation of more than 300 campers: fire officials Posted: 18 Jul 2015 09:35 AM PDT (Reuters) - Dozens of children were among more than 300 people evacuated from campgrounds early Saturday morning as firefighters battled brush fires burning in Southern California's drought-parched foothills, fire officials said. It has charred more that 125 acres northwest of San Bernardino, according to an online U.S. Forest Service post. At least five campgrounds near the fire were evacuated, sending 300 campers, including 130 children with special needs, to a nearby high school, the Los Angeles Fire Department tweeted. |
Three U.S. states move to arm National Guard offices Posted: 18 Jul 2015 01:58 PM PDT Governors Rick Scott of Florida, Greg Abbott of Texas and Mike Pence of Indiana said National Guard members need to protect themselves after four Marines and a Navy petty officer were shot and killed on Thursday in Chattanooga, Tennessee. In Florida, six guard offices now in storefronts will move into armories. "It has become clear that our military personnel must have the ability to defend themselves against these type of attacks on our own soil," Abbott said in a news release. |
