Ahmed Mohamed, 14, was accused of making a hoax bomb, police in Irving said. The Council on American-Islamic Relations said he is Muslim and the case serves as an example of the climate of hate and manufactured fear around the religion.

(Reuters) - An attorney for the man accused of gunning down nine people at a historic black church in South Carolina in June said on Wednesday his client is willing to plead guilty to state murder charges if that would spare him a death sentence. A guilty plea by Dylann Roof, 21, in exchange for a sentence of life in prison without parole also would spare the victims' families and survivors of the shootings from the trauma of trial proceedings, Roof's attorney Bill McGuire said. Prosecutors declined to comment afterward on whether they would accept a guilty plea from Roof, who is white and has been linked to white supremacist views.


Tsunami watch issued for Hawaii following Chile quake

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A tsunami watch was issued on Wednesday for Hawaii following a magnitude 8.3 earthquake off the coast of Chile, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said. The center said if tsunami waves impact Hawaii, the estimated earliest arrival time would be 2:28 a.m. Hawaii Standard Time (1228 GMT) on Thursday. (Reporting by Eric Beech; Editing by Will Dunham)
