U.S. budget deficit falls to 8-year low in 2015 Posted: 15 Oct 2015 01:03 PM PDT The US government's budget deficit fell to an eight-year low in fiscal 2015, dropping to $439 billion, the Treasury Department announced Thursday. The cut in the finance gap -- which was $1.4 trillion in 2009 -- brought the deficit down to 2.5 percent of gross domestic product, the lowest level since 2007. The achievement marked a long effort by the administration of President Barack Obama to pare back the budget shortfall after it soared when the economy plunged into crisis in 2008. |
Why U.S. troops are staying longer in Afghanistan Posted: 15 Oct 2015 03:05 PM PDT The announcement that thousands of U.S. troops will remain in Afghanistan longer than planned marks a major reversal of President Obama's goal to end both this war, as well as the war in Iraq, during his time in office. The president formally announced the policy change at the White House this morning alongside Vice President Joe Biden, Secretary of Defense Ash Carter and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Joseph Dunford. The decision comes as the situation in Afghanistan continues to deteriorate, highlighted by the Taliban's takeover of the city of Kunduz last month. |

Hastert attorney: Former speaker intends to plead guilty Posted: 15 Oct 2015 02:21 PM PDT CHICAGO (AP) — Former House Speaker Dennis Hastert intends to plead guilty in a hush-money case linked to allegations of sexual misconduct, a defense attorney said Thursday, a move that could ensure that any secrets from his days as a high school wrestling coach are never revealed in public. |
Few signs of improvement for Lamar Odom after collapse Posted: 15 Oct 2015 01:19 PM PDT Former pro basketball player and reality TV star Lamar Odom spent a third day hospitalized on Thursday, reportedly on life support following a series of strokes, after collapsing at a Nevada brothel where authorities said he had been using cocaine. With family and friends at his bedside and fans praying for his recovery, the estranged husband of Khloe Kardashian was reported to be in critical condition after being found unresponsive at the Love Ranch brothel on Tuesday. Celebrity news outlets TMZ.com and "Entertainment Tonight" reported on Thursday that Odom's kidneys were failing and he has been placed on dialysis. |
Ex-U.S. House Speaker Hastert to plead guilty in hush-money case Posted: 15 Oct 2015 03:44 PM PDT By Mary Wisniewski CHICAGO (Reuters) - Former U.S. House Speaker Dennis Hastert is expected to plead guilty in a hush-money case stemming from allegations of sexual misconduct in a deal with prosecutors that could still force him to serve time in prison. The tentative plea agreement, disclosed during a brief hearing in federal court in Chicago on Thursday, would mark a dramatic downfall for someone who once ranked among the most powerful men in the country. Hastert, 73, was charged in May with trying to hide large cash transactions as part of a payoff scheme and lying about it to the Federal Bureau of Investigation. |
Seattle Seahawks' Coleman arrested on suspicion of hit-and-run Posted: 15 Oct 2015 03:37 PM PDT Seattle Seahawks fullback Derrick Coleman has been arrested on suspicion of vehicular assault and hit-and-run, both felonies, police said on Thursday, and the NFL team has suspended him indefinitely. Coleman, 24, was being held without bail pending a court hearing in Seattle's King County Correctional Facility as of Thursday afternoon, according to jail records. Police in Bellevue, a Seattle suburb, said Coleman's fast-moving pickup truck collided with the back of a car on Wednesday evening, shoving the car up an embankment and onto a retention wall, where it came to a rest upside down. |
