Air strike that killed Iraqi soldiers appears to have been by U.S. plane: Carter Posted: 19 Dec 2015 07:57 AM PST By Yeganeh Torbati ON BOARD THE USS KEARSARGE (Reuters) - A U.S. aircraft appears to have mistakenly carried out an air strike that killed Iraqi security forces near the city of Fallujah, U.S. Defense Secretary Ash Carter said on Saturday. The Iraqi Minister of Defence Khaled al-Obeidi said earlier that nine soldiers died in the strike on Friday. The U.S. military is leading an international coalition that is waging an air offensive on Islamic State in Iraq and Syria, where the militant group control large swaths of territory. |
Sanders resolves dispute with DNC, regains access to voter files Posted: 18 Dec 2015 09:58 PM PST By Megan Cassella and James Oliphant WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders regained access to crucial voter files on Friday after taking the Democratic National Committee to court and accusing party leaders of trying to undermine his White House bid and help rival Hillary Clinton. The DNC had blocked access to the voter data after a Sanders campaign staffer improperly accessed Clinton's voter files, prompting charges of theft from the Clinton campaign and setting off a bitter political fight in what had been a relatively peaceful Democratic nominating race. |
California shooter's spouse visa approved despite questions, lawmaker says Posted: 19 Dec 2015 11:16 AM PST United States immigration officials failed to obtain required proof from San Bernardino shooter Tashfeen Malik that she had met her U.S. citizen fiancé in person, but granted her a spousal visa anyway, a Republican congressman said on Saturday. The new questions over the granting of the visa to Malik, raised by Congressman Bob Goodlatte of Virginia, suggest she was the beneficiary of a lapsed government vetting process now under intense scrutiny after the Dec. 2 attack that killed 14 people at a holiday party in the Southern California city. "In order to obtain a fiancée visa, it is required to demonstrate proof that the U.S. citizen and foreign national have met in person. |

Obama meets with San Bernardino victims' families Posted: 18 Dec 2015 11:33 PM PST By Julia Edwards SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. (Reuters) - President Barack Obama met with the families of most of the San Bernardino shooting victims on Friday for nearly three hours, and said he was moved by their emphasis on tolerance following the Dec. 2 attacks. "As difficult as this time is for them and for the entire community, they also represent the strength and the unity and the love that exists in this community and in this country," Obama told reporters after the meeting. Fourteen people died in the shootings in San Bernardino, California on Dec. 2, when radicalized Muslims Syed Rizwan Farook and his wife Tashfeen Malik opened fire on Farook's co-workers at a holiday party. |
