Protests force Trump into a ditch, en route to make his California pitch Posted: 29 Apr 2016 02:34 PM PDT BURLINGAME, Calif.—A little over a month before California's pivotal Republican presidential primary, Donald Trump began his official wooing of party delegates Friday, headlining a kickoff lunch at the state's annual GOP convention. But Trump's appearance was nearly derailed by massive protests outside the Hyatt Regency near the San Francisco airport, where the convention is being held. The protests blocked Trump's motorcade route, forcing the candidate and his Secret Service detail to abandon their vehicles on a nearby highway, jump a barricade wall and cross a ditch to get to the hotel's back entrance—movements that were captured by television news helicopters. |

16 blamed for mistakes in deadly US attack on Afghan clinic Posted: 29 Apr 2016 01:12 PM PDT WASHINGTON (AP) — Human error, violations of combat rules and untimely equipment failures led to the mistaken U.S. aerial attack on a charity-run hospital in Afghanistan last fall that killed 42 people, a senior American general said Friday. Investigators called the attack a "disproportional response to a threat that didn't exist." |
First US Zika-related death in Puerto Rico Posted: 29 Apr 2016 12:43 PM PDT The first Zika-related death on US soil was reported Friday in Puerto Rico, raising new concerns about the dangers of the mosquito-borne virus. "The patient died of complications related to severe thrombocytopenia," a poor clotting condition related to a low number of platelets in the blood, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said. "Although Zika virus–associated deaths are rare, the first identified death in Puerto Rico highlights the possibility of severe cases, as well as the need for continued outreach to raise health care providers' awareness of complications that might lead to severe disease or death," the CDC said. |

N.C. Gov. Pat McCrory defends HB2: I can’t believe we’re talking about this Posted: 29 Apr 2016 09:14 AM PDT N.C. Gov. Pat McCrory makes remarks during an interview at the governor's mansion in Raleigh, N.C., on April 12, 2016. North Carolina Gov. Pat McCrory continues to defend the controversial "bathroom bill" he signed into law last month – rousing anger and boycotts by LGBT activists. In an appearance on "The Kelly File" Thursday night, the much-maligned governor argued that the primary purpose of House Bill 2 (HB2) is to protect the privacy of children in locker rooms, showers and bathrooms. |
The GOP has split into Trump and Ryan wings Posted: 28 Apr 2016 05:56 PM PDT The day after Donald Trump swept five primaries this week and tightened his grip on the Republican nomination for president, both he and the other most prominent Republican politician in the country were speaking the language of populism. "We're going to get rid of these politicians," Trump said in his opening remarks during an hourlong appearance on Fox News on Wednesday in which Greta Van Susteren and a studio audience in Indianapolis lavished him with praise, sometimes in the form of questions. House Speaker Paul D. Ryan, R-Wis., sounded a similar note. |
Former US House speaker: Cruz is 'Lucifer in the flesh' Posted: 28 Apr 2016 10:49 PM PDT Former US House speaker John Boehner has let fly with a stunning critique of fellow Republican and 2016 presidential hopeful Ted Cruz, labeling him the devil incarnate. "Lucifer in the flesh" is how the ever-blunt Republican heavyweight -- who stepped down as speaker last year -- described the Texas senator, who is struggling to block billionaire Donald Trump's march to the Republican presidential nomination, according to the Stanford Daily newspaper. "I have Democrat friends and Republican friends," Boehner said. |

Hanning said he had been "silent all my life" about the atrocities he witnessed at the camp where more than one million European Jews died, and had never spoken a word about it to his wife, children or grandchildren. "No one in my family knew that I worked at Auschwitz. |

Graffiti at Utah's Arches National Park may be irreparable Posted: 28 Apr 2016 06:29 PM PDT (Reuters) - Graffiti etched into one of the popular red rock arches in Utah's Arches National Park may be too deep to be repaired, the park's superintendent said on Thursday. The site of the graffiti is near a hiking trail to one of the park's main attractions, Delicate Arch, a 64-feet high sandstone structure that has been known to draw hundreds of visitors at a time. Defacing a national park can lead to a sentence of six months in prison and a $500 fine, according to the website for the U.S. Department of Justice. |
