Unconventional #12: Ted Cruz’s last crusade, a Trump-Gingrich ticket (and more!) Posted: 11 May 2016 10:11 AM PDT Texas Sen. Ted Cruz suspended his bid for the Republican presidential nomination last Tuesday after a crippling loss to Donald Trump in Indiana. In the span of a single 16-hour period early this week, Cruz's top supporters revealed that they are preparing to wage war in Cleveland over the GOP platform, while Cruz himself pointedly refused rule out the prospect of resurrecting his campaign against Trump. |
Steep decline in U.S. recruits to ISIS, FBI chief James Comey says Posted: 11 May 2016 02:21 PM PDT FBI Director James Comey said the Islamic State's ability to recruit fighters from inside the US to wage war in Syria and Iraq has sharply diminished over the past year, citing new figures that he says shows the terror group has "lost significant power" inside the country. "They've lost their ability to attract people to the caliphate from the United States," Comey told reporters at a briefing at bureau headquarters Tuesday. At the same time, Comey said the Islamic State is still attracting "troubled souls" through social media who pose potential terror threats, resulting in more than 1,000 active FBI investigations into online recruitment– a slight increase from over a year ago. |
Trump: I don’t expect to release my tax returns before November Posted: 11 May 2016 06:35 AM PDT In a reversal, Donald Trump no longer appears eager to release his tax returns before the November election. Trump said in a Tuesday interview with The Associated Press that an ongoing Internal Revenue Service audit was his primary reason for not releasing documents. Trump, the presumptive GOP nominee, has for months declined to release his tax returns, citing an audit. |
Ex-Charleston Police Officer Michael Slager Indicted in Shooting Death of Walter Scott Posted: 11 May 2016 01:18 PM PDT A federal grand jury has indicted ex-North Charleston police officer Michael Slager on three counts for fatally shooting Walter Scott, an unarmed black man. Slager has been charged with "deprivation of rights under color of law" -- in essence saying Slager violated Scott's constitutionally protected civil rights by shooting him -- use of a weapon during commission of a crime of violence, and obstruction of justice. The indictment, which alleges use of excessive force, comes just over a year after Slager pulled over Scott for a broken tail light, and a subsequent encounter caught on cell phone video appeared to show Slager shooting Scott in the back, sparking outrage nationwide at a time when the use of force by police became a heated topic of debate. |

Trump draws even with Clinton in national White House poll Posted: 11 May 2016 02:42 PM PDT By Ginger Gibson and Amanda Becker WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Republican Donald Trump pulled even with Democratic rival Hillary Clinton in a Reuters/Ipsos opinion poll released on Wednesday, in a dramatic early sign that the Nov. 8 presidential election might be more hotly contested than first thought. While much can change in the six months until the election, the results of the online survey are a red flag for the Clinton campaign that the billionaire's unorthodox bid for the White House cannot be brushed aside. Trump's numbers surged after he effectively won the Republican nomination last week by knocking out his two remaining rivals, according to the poll. |

Coal King Don Blankenship Makes Last-Minute Bid to Put Off Prison Posted: 11 May 2016 01:35 PM PDT Attorneys for Don Blankenship mounted a last-minute effort to keep the disgraced West Virginia coal boss out of prison, just two days before he was scheduled to report for his first day behind bars. Blankenship's lawyers filed an emergency stay motion Tuesday in hopes of convincing the court to allow their client to remain a free man on $1 million bail while the court considers his appeal. Blankenship, the former CEO of Massey Energy, was convicted in December and later sentenced to one year in prison for conspiring to violate safety standards ahead of a mine explosion that killed 29 workers in 2010. |
Hillary Clinton Slams Donald Trump's Tax Plan as Being 'Written by a Billionaire for Billionaires' Posted: 11 May 2016 01:30 PM PDT In an interview on NBC's "Meet the Press" last weekend, Trump asserted, "Nobody knows more about taxes than I do and income than I do." But he has recently drawn scrutiny over the specifics of his tax proposal. In her speech today, Clinton eventually turned to Trump's own tax returns. My husband and I have released 33 years of tax returns. |
Islamic State bombs kill 80 in deadliest Baghdad attacks this year Posted: 11 May 2016 08:27 AM PDT Three suicide bombings claimed by Islamic State across Baghdad killed at least 80 people on Wednesday, Iraqi police and hospital sources said, in the deadliest attacks in the Iraqi capital this year. Security has gradually improved in Baghdad, which was the target of daily bombings a decade ago, but violence against security forces and Shi'ite Muslim civilians is still frequent. The fight against Islamic State, which seized about a third of Iraq's territory in 2014, has exacerbated a long-running sectarian conflict in Iraq mostly between Sunnis and the Shi'ite majority that came to power after the U.S.-led invasion in 2003. |
A Look at Effort to Impeach Brazil's First Female President That She Calls a Coup Posted: 11 May 2016 01:18 PM PDT Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff, a longtime advocate of anti-corruption and the first female ever to lead Brazil, is now just hours away from possibly stepping down as the Senate votes on whether she should face impeachment. Lawmakers in Brazil's lower house of Congress last month reportedly voted to start impeachment proceedings against her. When the final tally was announced, 367 lawmakers had voted to impeach Rousseff, more than the two-thirds needed to pass the motion. |
Atheist Ad Mocking Noah's Ark Park as 'Genocide and Incest' Center Rejected by Billboard Companies Posted: 11 May 2016 01:30 PM PDT Two billboard companies have refused to run an advertisement ridiculing the Ark Encounter, a Noah's Ark-themed amusement park being built in Williamstown, Kentucky, according to the group that whose ad was rejected. The atheist group Tri-State Freethinkers, which commissioned the advertisement, says it has been turned down by billboard companies Lamar and Event Advertising and Promotions LLC, despite $10,000 having been raised to fund the project. "We tried with everyone we could think of, and these were [billboard] companies that originally were in agreement to do business with us," Jim Helton, the president of Tri-State Freethinkers, told ABC News today, speculating that fear of a scandal pushed the companies to drop the ads. |
