Gorsuch frustrates Democrats at confirmation hearing Posted: 21 Mar 2017 06:50 PM PDT During a 10-hour grilling from senators Tuesday, Judge Neil Gorsuch offered few hints as to his judicial philosophy, frustrating the Judiciary Committee's Democrats in a polished and calm performance. Gorsuch — sprinkling his answers to the committee's questions with "gosh" and "golly" and "goodness" — deftly dodged Democratic senators' attempts to pin him down on abortion, the scope of the Second Amendment and the Citizens United campaign finance decision. The 49-year-old Colorado judge also repeatedly insisted he would maintain his independence from President Trump and said no one in the administration had asked him to promise to rule a certain way on cases once he got to the court–neutralizing one of Democrats' main lines of attack against him. |

British police are treating the incident as terrorism. London Mayor Sadiq Khan released a video statement condemning the attack. |

White House won’t say whether Trump will present proof of wiretapping Posted: 21 Mar 2017 12:44 PM PDT At his daily briefing on Tuesday, White House press secretary Sean Spicer declined to say when or whether President Trump will present evidence for the claim that he was wiretapped by his predecessor, Barack Obama. In an interview with Fox News' Tucker Carlson on March 15, Trump promised "some very interesting items coming to the forefront over the next two weeks" when he was asked about the claim. |

Franken calls Gorsuch dissent in trucker case ‘absurd’ Posted: 21 Mar 2017 02:53 PM PDT Minnesota Sen. Al Franken recalled his comedic past in a contentious exchange with Supreme Court nominee Neil Gorsuch Tuesday during the judge's confirmation hearing. Franken was questioning Gorsuch on the case of Alphonse Maddin, a trucker who was fired after his trailer broke down in subzero temperatures. Gorsuch concluded in a dissent that it wasn't illegal for the company to fire Maddin for seeking safety, writing that "it might be fair to ask whether TransAm's decision was a wise or kind one, but it's not our job to answer questions like that. |

White House says it’s ‘insane’ to suggest Trump knew campaign chairman worked on pro-Putin project Posted: 22 Mar 2017 03:20 PM PDT On Wednesday, White House press secretary Sean Spicer sought to put additional distance between President Trump and his former campaign chairman, Paul Manafort. Yahoo News asked Spicer about an Associated Press report that Manafort crafted a plan to advance Putin's interests in 2005 for a billionaire client with ties to the Russian president. |
Over-excited little girl steals the Pope's hat off his head Posted: 22 Mar 2017 08:15 AM PDT Little kids have 10 times the energy most adults have. Put them in contact with a famous person, and anything can happen. MountainButorac, a Catholic blogger, recently took his goddaughter to see Pope Francis II in Rome. And the lucky little one didn't just get to see him, she got close enough to receive a kiss from the head of the Catholic Church. But she wanted so much more than that. Overwhelmed by energy, she reached out, desperate to discharge it somewhere, and pulled the Pope's hat off his head. SEE ALSO: Little kid aims his pro stink eye at a chip thief The Pope's hat is technically called a zucchetto. And he actually seemed to enjoy the moment, or at least have enough social skills to feign enthusiasm. Watch the full interaction and rejoice! The internet has risen! We're sure Pope Francis forgave her for the transgression. WATCH: Robotic glove lets people with limited hand mobility perform daily tasks |
China denies reports of building on disputed shoal Posted: 22 Mar 2017 02:19 AM PDT China's Foreign Ministry on Wednesday denied reports that China will begin preparatory work this year for an environmental monitoring station on disputed Scarborough Shoal in the South China Sea. China seized the shoal, which is northeast of the Spratly islands, in 2012 and denied access to Philippine fishermen. Earlier this month, Xiao Jie, the mayor of what China calls Sansha City, said China planned to begin preparatory work this year to build environmental monitoring stations on a number of islands, including Scarborough Shoal. |

A postelection political action committee founded by the email director of the Hillary Clinton campaign to encourage millennial Democrats to run for state and local offices reports that more than 8,000 people have taken the first step toward becoming candidates. Contacted by Yahoo News, Run for Something founder Amanda Litman explained what she thought was behind that astonishing number. |
Newly restored shrine at Jesus's tomb unveiled Posted: 22 Mar 2017 08:20 AM PDT The newly restored shrine surrounding what is believed to be Jesus's tomb was unveiled at a ceremony in Jerusalem Wednesday following months of delicate work and in time for crowds of Easter visitors. Religious leaders in traditional robes addressed a ceremony at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, built at the site where Christians believe Jesus was crucified and buried. Dignitaries including Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras and Orthodox Patriarch of Constantinople Bartholomew I, considered the spiritual head of Orthodox church leaders, were in attendance. |

Gorsuch calls same-sex marriage decision ‘settled law’ Posted: 21 Mar 2017 02:31 PM PDT Judge Neil Gorsuch referred to the Supreme Court's recent same-sex marriage decision as "settled law," using a stronger phrase than he has for other legal precedents. Sen. Al Franken, D-Minn., asked Gorsuch to explain how his views on marriage equality have changed since 2004, when the George W. Bush administration was pushing for ballot initiatives that banned the practice in states. Gorsuch replied that sharing his "personal views" would send a misleading signal to the American people that he might be inclined to rule one way or another on future cases that come up on the subject. |

How Trump Can Fix His Troubled White House Posted: 21 Mar 2017 02:00 AM PDT The president's first 100 days have been, by and large, a disaster. Reports of chaos, confusion, and infighting seem to leak out of the West Wing on a daily basis. The president is his own worst enemy, easily distracted, obsessed with minutiae, and uninterested in instilling much order in his administration. His staffers, many of them young, don't really know the ropes, and it shows. The cluster of aides who arrived with the president from out of town irks official Washington, which, feeling shut out, views the executive-branch staff as bumbling provincial bumpkins and cheers on every failure. The media are more than happy to weave a narrative of chaos. Relations between press and president were strained during the campaign—stories bubbled up about the candidate's sexual indiscretions, and aides became convinced their boss was subject to a double standard—and now reporters are out for blood. Even the president's wife is subject to harsh attacks. |

"The president condemns the wicked attack and directs security agencies to begin immediate investigation with a view to bringing the perpetrators of the dastardly act to book," said Buhari's spokesman, Femi Adesina. "The president also condemns the wanton killings in other parts of the country." Buhari, a former military ruler, met the chief of the army and air force on Tuesday. |
Rooftop refugees plead for water in flooded Peru city Posted: 20 Mar 2017 11:50 PM PDT Huarmey (Perú) (AFP) - Stranded on their rooftops by flooding and mudslides, residents of Huarmey, Peru ironically need the one thing they see everywhere they look: water. Last Wednesday, the rain that has been pummeling Peru for a week sent a series of mudslides barreling down the hillsides of the Andes mountains and into the city. |

Gorsuch: I would have ‘walked out the door’ if Trump had asked me to overturn Roe Posted: 21 Mar 2017 11:37 AM PDT Judge Neil Gorsuch said he was never asked by President Trump to promise to overturn the landmark Supreme Court case protecting a woman's right to an abortion and would have promptly walked out on the president if he had. Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., asked Gorsuch on the second day of his confirmation hearing if the president had ever made Gorsuch promise to vote to overturn the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision, if he is confirmed to the Supreme Court. |

South Carolina church shooter's friend to serve time for lying, silence Posted: 21 Mar 2017 12:47 PM PDT The South Carolina man who suspected his friend Dylann Roof was to blame for the June 2015 massacre at a historic black church but did not immediately call police and told others to stay silent was sentenced on Tuesday to more than two years in prison. Joey Meek, 22, told authorities Roof revealed his plot during a cocaine and vodka-fueled night about a week before the shooting, which was one of several racially charged shootings in recent years that reopened debate about race relations and gun control laws in the United States. Roof, who is white, told Meek he wanted to start a race war by killing black people at a church, court records show. |

Drones all around — Unmanned aircraft take on various roles Posted: 22 Mar 2017 06:40 AM PDT The number of unmanned aircraft, or drones, in the United States will jump dramatically over the next five years, according to the Federal Aviation Administration. The increase comes after the Obama administration in 2016 implemented new rules that opened the skies to low-level small drones for education, research and routine commercial use. Policy makers are still debating whether to allow a sweeping expansion in drone use for activities like deliveries where aircraft would fly beyond the sight of an operator. |
