Pence reassures Japan of U.S. resolve on North Korea, to work with China Posted: 18 Apr 2017 04:33 AM PDT By Roberta Rampton TOKYO (Reuters) - U.S. Vice President Mike Pence reassured Japan of American commitment to reining in North Korea's nuclear and missile ambitions on Tuesday, after warning that U.S. strikes in Syria and Afghanistan showed the strength of its resolve. Pence arrived in Tokyo from South Korea, where he assured leaders of an "iron-clad" alliance with the United States in the face of the reclusive North, which has conducted a series of missile and nuclear tests in defiance of U.N. sanctions. "The era of strategic patience is over and while all options are on the table, President (Donald) Trump is determined to work closely with Japan, with South Korea, with all our allies in the region and with China to achieve a peaceable resolution and the denuclearization of the Korean peninsula," Pence said in Tokyo before lunch with Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. |

The 44th president did not make any remarks at the ceremony, held at St. Paul's Cathedral in Pittsburgh's Oakland neighborhood. After Rooney died Thursday, Obama released a statement lauding the "championship-caliber good man." Rooney served as the U.S. ambassador to Ireland during the Obama years. |

Alabama's new governor orders speedier election to fill Senate seat Posted: 18 Apr 2017 03:14 PM PDT Alabama Governor Kay Ivey on Tuesday moved up to December the election to fill the U.S. Senate seat vacated by Jeff Sessions after he was named attorney general, saying that the original plan to hold the election in late 2018 was not soon enough to meet state law. Ivey last week replaced fellow Republican Robert Bentley as governor after he resigned amid impeachment proceedings in the legislature. Bentley had appointed Republican Luther Strange in February to fill the seat Sessions held before joining President Donald Trump's cabinet. |

Boy, woman killed in Venezuela mass protests Posted: 19 Apr 2017 04:52 PM PDT A teenage boy and a woman died after being shot Wednesday during massive protests in Venezuela against President Nicolas Maduro, bringing to seven the number killed this month in a mounting political crisis. Riot police fired tear gas to force back stone-throwing demonstrators as tens of thousands of people joined protest marches in Caracas and several other cities. The opposition has accused Maduro of letting state forces and gangs of armed thugs violently repress demonstrators as he resists opposition pressure for him to quit. |

Big space rock to streak past Earth on Wednesday Posted: 18 Apr 2017 11:19 AM PDT An asteroid stretching 650 metres (2,000 feet) across is on track to whoosh past Earth on Wednesday at a safe -- but uncomfortably close -- distance, according to astronomers. "Although there is no possibility for the asteroid to collide with our planet, this will be a very close approach for an asteroid this size," NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory said in a statement. Dubbed 2014-JO25, the asteroid will come within 1.8 million kilometres (1.1 million miles) of Earth, less than five times the distance to the Moon. |

Britain arrests Indian tycoon Mallya for extradition Posted: 18 Apr 2017 06:43 AM PDT Indian tycoon Vijay Mallya has been arrested in London following an extradition request from India where he is accused of fraud, British police said on Tuesday. The flamboyant financier, who co-owns Formula One team Force India, appeared in a London court on Tuesday and was granted bail. Mallya fled India in March 2016 owing more than $1 billion after defaulting on loan payments to state-owned banks and allegedly misusing the funds. |
Uganda begins winding down operation against Lord's Resistance Army Posted: 19 Apr 2017 05:59 AM PDT By Elias Biryabarema KAMPALA (Reuters) - The Ugandan military said on Wednesday it has begun withdrawing troops from Central African Republic where it had been pursuing rebel leader Joseph Kony and his Lord's Resistance Army, saying it has accomplished its mission - although Kony remains at large. Uganda has been leading a U.S.-supported African Union regional task force tracking the LRA and Kony, who has been indicted by the Hague-based International Criminal Court. For nearly two decades the rebels battled the government of Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni from bases in the north of the country and across the border in what is now South Sudan. |

(AP) — Arkansas officials vowed to carry out a double execution later this week after the U.S. Supreme Court delivered a setback to the state's plan to resume capital punishment for the first time in nearly 12 years by refusing to lift an order sparing an inmate just minutes before his death warrant expired. |

Death toll after Philippine bus plunge rises to 31 Posted: 18 Apr 2017 09:20 PM PDT The death toll from a Philippine bus that plunged into a ravine rose to 31 with signs that overloading contributed to the crash, a police official said on Wednesday. The accident, which saw the bus come off a winding road to fall 24 metres (80 feet) into a ravine in the upland province of Nueva Ecija on Tuesday, also left 46 injured with four still in a critical condition, said Senior Superintendent Antonio Yarra. |
Medical guidelines may mean millions miss out on life-saving drugs Posted: 18 Apr 2017 12:37 PM PDT By Andrew M. Seaman (Reuters Health) - More than nine million people may miss out on cholesterol-lowering drugs that prevent heart attacks and strokes if doctors choose one set of medical guidelines over another, according to a new study. "I would say we're still searching for the perfect guidelines," said lead author Michael Pencina, of Duke University in Durham, North Carolina. The 2013 ACC/AHA guidelines recommend statins for people ages 40 to 75 with at least a 7.5 percent risk of having a heart attack or stroke in the next 10 years. |

Apple said to be building 100M new iPhones as Samsung strives for 60M Galaxy S8s Posted: 19 Apr 2017 11:40 AM PDT Apple is working on three new iPhones this year, with the iPhone 8 expected to bring over a variety of novel features according to many reports. Those features should include a full-screen design, wireless charging, and next-generation augmented reality capabilities. According to a new report from Asia, chip suppliers will start stocking parts for the upcoming iPhones in the second quarter and will accelerate production towards the end of the quarter.
According to Digitimes, chip demand for Apple's next iPhones will exceed 50 million sets per quarter during the second half of the year. If accurate, Apple may produce more than 100 million new iPhones, including iPhone 8, iPhone 7s, and iPhone 7s Plus this year. The report notes that total iPhone sales might hit a total of 220 million to 230 million units. That estimate is only for the 2017 iPhones, which is an impressive number, considering that Apple will probably continue to sell the iPhone SE and iPhone 7 series alongside the upcoming devices. Samsung, meanwhile, reportedly has an internal sales target of 60 million new Galaxy S8 and S8+ handsets, combined. The report notes that TSMC will make the A11 chip that will power all 2017 iPhones. The foundry is expected to ramp up production in the second half of the year, and the 10nm node should account for about 10% of its wafer sales during the six-month period. Other chips suppliers that are said to be making parts for the iPhone include ADI, Broadcom, Cirrus Logic, Cypress, NXP, Qualcomm, STMicroelectronics, and TI. Apple may be getting ready to mass produce more than 100 million iPhones this year, but more and more reports say the iPhone 8 will see significant delays, as Apple is experiencing manufacturing issues with certain technologies like the in-screen fingerprint scanner. |
Thousands of Massachusetts drug cases to be dismissed after lab scandal Posted: 18 Apr 2017 02:29 PM PDT By Scott Malone BOSTON (Reuters) - Close to 20,000 Massachusetts criminal drug cases are set to be dismissed because of a scandal involving a former state chemist who admitted faking tests, civil liberties activists and prosecutors said on Tuesday. It will mean the largest number of drug cases tossed out in U.S. history due to one person, according to the American Civil Liberties Union. Rogue chemist Annie Dookhan pleaded guilty in 2013 to tampering with evidence during her nine years working at a state crime lab in Boston. |

Georgia run-off sets new test for Trump Posted: 19 Apr 2017 09:42 AM PDT Republicans were dealt an unwelcome reminder of Donald Trump's unpopularity Wednesday after a young Democrat's inconclusive but rousing first round victory in a race for a congressional seat long held by the president's party. Jon Ossoff, 30, fell just short of an outright win with 48.1 percent, but came in first by a wide margin in a crowded field of candidates in Georgia's conservative 6th district, where Tuesday's vote was seen as an early test of strength for the president. Ossoff, a documentary filmmaker and former congressional aide, told energized supporters before all the returns were in that he and Democrats "shattered expectations" with their performance. |
Audi sees China as the catalyst for its future electric car range Posted: 19 Apr 2017 02:24 AM PDT After keeping a comparatively low profile at New York, Audi, a company with a reputation for delivering show-stopping concept cars for every automotive event it attends, has arrived in Shanghai in top form with a sporty electric car concept, the e-tron Sportback, that it promises will be a production reality within the next two years. Like VW, Audi is showing the world what's possible with plug-in electric cars via a series of conceptual studies. It started with the e-Tron Quattro in Frankfurt back in September 2015 -- a plug-in SUV -- and on Wednesday the second car in the series, a fastback (Audi's name for a car with a coupé form factor but with four, rather than two doors) made its global debut. |
