US strike on Syria is widely praised, but angers Russia Posted: 07 Apr 2017 08:02 AM PDT BEIRUT (AP) — World leaders rallied around the United States after it launched a missile strike early Friday on a Syrian air base in response to this week's chemical attack, while Russia condemned the move as "aggression" and suspended crucial coordination with Washington in Syria's congested skies. |

China's Xi urges trade cooperation in first meeting with Trump Posted: 07 Apr 2017 03:16 AM PDT By Steve Holland PALM BEACH, Fla. (Reuters) - Chinese President Xi Jinping urged cooperation with the United States on trade and investment on Thursday, inviting President Donald Trump to visit China in a cordial start to their first meeting likely to broach sensitive security and commercial issues. Trump has said he wants to raise concerns about China's trade practices and press Xi to do more to rein in North Korea's nuclear ambitions during his two-day visit to the Spanish-style Mar-a-Lago resort in Palm Beach, Florida, though no major deals on either issue are expected. The two sides should promote the "healthy development of bilateral trade and investment" and advance talks on a bilateral investment agreement, Xi said, according to a statement on China's Foreign Ministry website. |

Duterte orders Philippine troops to South China Sea reefs Posted: 06 Apr 2017 03:09 AM PDT Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte said Thursday he has ordered troops to deploy on unoccupied South China Sea islands, boosting the military presence on remote reefs claimed by Manila in a move that could provoke rival claimants including Beijing. China asserts sovereignty over almost all of the resource-rich South China Sea despite rival claims from Southeast Asian neighbours and has rapidly built reefs into artificial islands capable of hosting military planes. Duterte has previously sought to improve his nation's relations with Beijing by adopting a non-confrontational approach over their competing claims in the strategically vital waters. |

Trump to Abe: US to boost defenses against North Korea Posted: 05 Apr 2017 07:36 PM PDT The United States will continue to build its military defenses against North Korea, Donald Trump told Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on Wednesday, pledging all options are on the table. The pair spoke by phone a day after Pyongyang fired a ballistic missile into the Sea of Japan, in what analysts said was a warning ahead of Trump's summit with China's Xi Jinping at which North Korea is set to dominate the agenda. Trump "made clear that the United States will continue to strengthen its ability to deter and defend itself and its allies with the full range of its military capabilities," the White House said in a statement about the call. |

Such meetings are chaired by U.N. Syria envoy Staffan de Mistura and were set up in early 2016 with joint U.S.-Russian backing. |

AP WAS THERE: US Congress declares war during WWI Posted: 06 Apr 2017 04:09 PM PDT EDITORS NOTE: On April 6, 1917, the United States joined the Great War. President Woodrow Wilson had tried in vain to avoid the global conflict now known as World War I, and called on Congress to declare war. By the time U.S. troops helped defeat Germany and end the conflict in 1918, more than 9 million people had died, including some 116,000 Americans. A conflict first fought on horseback and in trenches evolved into a modern war, waged with armored vehicles, air combat and mustard gas. |

Russia warns of 'negative consequences' if U.S. targets Syria Posted: 06 Apr 2017 05:50 PM PDT UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - Russia's deputy U.N. envoy, Vladimir Safronkov, warned on Thursday of "negative consequences" if the United States carries out military strikes on Syria over a deadly toxic gas attack. "We have to think about negative consequences, negative consequences, and all the responsibility if military action occurred will be on shoulders of those who initiated such doubtful and tragic enterprise," Safronkov told reporters when asked about possible U.S. strikes. When asked what those negative consequences could be, he said: "Look at Iraq, look at Libya. ... |
You don’t even need a license to drive the newest Volvo Posted: 07 Apr 2017 01:02 PM PDT Volvo makes some of the safest, most technologically impressive vehicles on the road today, so when the company announces a brand new car it's a pretty big deal. In a new video announcement via Facebook, Volvo surprised everyone with the announcement of an all-new one-seater that is not only distinctly Volvo, but also extremely affordable. It's called the Volvo Rider Concept XC Coupe, and it's priced at a jaw-dropping $175. Oh, did I mention it's actually just a toy? No? Well that's because Volvo didn't mention it either.
https://www.facebook.com/volvocars/videos/10154456949107083/ In a masterful bit of trolling, Volvo's announcement makes no mention of the XC Coupe being a plastic car designed for children between one and three years of age, and the delightfully tricky camera work in the video leads you to believe that it is indeed a real car, all the way up to until the very end. Despite being nothing more than a plastic shell with some fancy bits slapped on, the cute little car is actually pretty impressive. The coupe has built-in headlights and taillights that operate on a timer. It comes in either silver or "Crash Test Orange," with the latter featuring the same kind of crash test markings that the real test vehicles use, along with a "Volvo Safety Centre" badge. There's even a horn in case things get a little bit crazy in the driveway. The toys are on sale right now, and the Volvo store shows that they have over 300 of each color in stock and ready for shipping. If you've always wanted a Volvo of your own but could never afford it, you might want to pick one up and unleash your inner child. |

Trump ally in Congress steps aside as Russia probe leader Posted: 06 Apr 2017 04:00 PM PDT The Republican leader of the House investigation into Russian interference in the US election stepped aside Thursday after being criticized for compromising the probe in visits to the White House. Devin Nunes, the chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, had sought to turn the investigation away from Russia and toward President Donald Trump's allegations that the previous Obama administration had abused its powers by spying on Trump and his advisors. |
The 7 inmates scheduled to die in Arkansas this month Posted: 06 Apr 2017 02:15 PM PDT LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) — A federal judge says Arkansas may not execute an inmate who has won a clemency recommendation from the state Parole Board until the panel allows for a 30-day comment period. The decision effectively delays his execution until after a lethal injection drug expires. Seven other inmates are scheduled to be put to death before the state's supply of midazolam expires April 30. |

Inside the North Korean military: A look at the rogue nation's armed services Posted: 06 Apr 2017 06:14 AM PDT North Korea rarely misses an opportunity to conduct banned missile tests to coincide with high-profile world events at which the impoverished yet nuclear-armed country is likely to be discussed. On Wednesday, it fired a missile a day before the first meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping. North Korea is pushing hard to upgrade its weapons systems to cope with what it calls U.S. hostility. |

Minnesota finds source of invasive weed on conservation land Posted: 06 Apr 2017 03:44 PM PDT Infestations of the weed, Palmer amaranth, have affected other states in the U.S. Midwest through seed planted on land in the federal Conservation Reserve Program, weed scientists have said. Palmer amaranth, which is native to the Southwest, has spread across conservation land in Iowa, which accounts for nearly a fifth of U.S. corn production and in 2016 exported more than $1 billion of corn and soy. Infestations of Palmer amaranth, which can grow as much as 2 inches a day, spread over 30 plantings in the federal program in Minnesota, according to the state agriculture department. |
Greece cedes to reform demands to snap bailout impasse Posted: 07 Apr 2017 07:09 AM PDT Greece gave in and accepted a tough set of reforms with its eurozone creditors on Friday in hopes of unlocking bailout cash in time to avert a looming debt default. Eurozone finance ministers meeting in the Maltese capital of Valletta said Athens agreed in principle to the new reforms and technical teams would visit Greece as soon as possible to seal the deal. "The big blocks have now been sorted out and now we just have the final stretch," Eurogroup head Jeroen Dijsselbloem said after the talks. |
This dog that was raised with cats loves hanging in a cat tree Posted: 06 Apr 2017 05:28 PM PDT While the rivalry between cats and dogs may very well live on forever, the truth is, some felines and pooches get along just fine. Besides, a cat and a dog are definitely not the oddest of animal friends. Redditor TheOrdner shared a photo of their dog to r/aww on Thursday, which they say was raised with two cats around the house. SEE ALSO: This smart collar will make pet care a walk in the park Nothing to see here. Just a very normal doggo doing normal doggo things. TheOrdner also revealed in the comment section that their dog also enjoys cat toys, and has a special way of dealing with his "brothers" when they get out of line.
