The US military said the strikes were aimed at stopping the militia advance and protect fighters it has sponsored throughout the civil war and in the fight against the Islamic State terror group. |
Japan cabinet approves bill allowing emperor's abdication Posted: 19 May 2017 03:57 AM PDT The Japanese government on Friday approved a one-off bill allowing ageing Emperor Akihito to step down from the Chrysanthemum Throne, in the first such abdication in two centuries. The bill is likely to receive swift final approval in parliament, Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga said after Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's cabinet signed off on the legislation. Abdication must take place within three years of the bill becoming law. |

Mr Patel had arrived in the US on a flight from Quito, Ecuador and was detained on 10 May for allegedly missing proper immigration documents. |
Thousands of AT&T and DirecTV workers are going on strike this weekend Posted: 19 May 2017 12:48 PM PDT On Friday afternoon, thousands of AT&T employees walked off the job in protest of the company's inability to come to an agreement on union contracts with its workforce. Wireless workers from 36 states (and DC) will take part in the strike, along with wireline workers from California, Nevada and Connecticut and DirecTV technicians in California and Nevada. If an agreement can't be reached quickly, retail stores in several states will likely shut down this weekend as well. "We will no longer stand by as AT&T hems and haws at the bargaining table, keeping its own workers from achieving the American Dream they once promised," said Dennis Trainor, Vice President of CWA District 1. "Despite being the largest telecom company in the country with nearly $1 billion a month in profits and the CEO earning $28 million, AT&T continues to pinch its workers' basic needs and stand in the way of high-quality service its customers pay good money for. This is a warning to AT&T: there's only one way out of this now—a fair contract—and we'll settle for nothing less." According to a press release we received this afternoon, AT&T workers are demanding wage increases, improved job security, affordable healthcare and a fair scheduling policy. AT&T employees claim that once the company changed its commission plan, they started taking home less money. Another major point of contention for the workers is the outsourcing of labor. They argue that AT&T is cutting customer service jobs and sacrificing the quality to save money. 12,000 call center jobs in the US have been eliminated since 2011 as AT&T has chosen to instead contract with third-party vendors overseas that supply low-wage workers who aren't subject to much weaker labor protections. The press release states that the AT&T employees will return to work on Monday, but have "vowed to do what they have to do if AT&T violates their rights or an open-ended strike becomes necessary." UPDATE: AT&T provided us with the following statement in regards to the strike: A strike is in no one's best interest, and it's baffling as to why union leadership would call one when we're offering terms in which our employees in these contracts – some of whom average from $115,000 to $148,000 in total compensation – will be better off financially. We're prepared, and we will continue working hard to serve our customers. This involves less than 14 percent of our employees. What's most important is we're all family, whether you're a union member or not. Like any family we have our disagreements but we'll sort them out. We've reached 29 fair agreements since 2015 covering over 128,000 of our employees, and we're confident we can do the same here. |

'Witch hunt': Trump appears at odds with White House over Robert Mueller Posted: 18 May 2017 08:28 AM PDT The appointment of Robert Mueller comes in the wake of Donald Trump's firing of FBI director James Comey, who was leading the investigation. Donald Trump on Thursday said he was the target of the "greatest witch hunt" in US political history after a decision by the Department of Justice to appoint special counsel to investigate ties between his 2016 presidential campaign and Russia. |
Israel minister's Jerusalem dress sparks online storm Posted: 18 May 2017 08:24 AM PDT Israeli Culture Minister Miri Regev triggered a social media storm on Thursday after she attended the Cannes film festival in an evening dress featuring a Jerusalem Islamic shrine. Several tweets altered what one called the "provocative" garment which shows a panorama of the walled Old City in Israeli-occupied east Jerusalem, including the Dome of the Rock, located in the flashpoint Al-Aqsa mosque compound. One tweet redesigns the dress to show a nightime scene of the Old City with fireworks bursting overhead and no sign of the Dome of the Rock. |
Pit bull on the brink of euthanasia gets second chance as a police dog instead Posted: 19 May 2017 12:40 PM PDT Here's your daily reminder that dogs are amazing creatures. Leonard, a pit bull who had been put on the euthanasia list due to aggressive behavior, is set to become Ohio's first pit bull police dog. According to local ABC news, Leonard was brought to Union County Humane Society where staff members found Leonard's behavior too aggressive for adoption. This meant the next stop for Leonard would be euthanasia. SEE ALSO: Adorable pup loses a shocking 80 pounds and is now living his best life Fortunately, shelter director Jim Alloway — who has a background in working with police dogs — saw potential in Leonard. "I walked out with a squegee. He ran up and bit it and then he went running through the yard. I knew it was a special characteristic. He wasn't being aggressive. He wanted to play," Alloway told ABC news. Leonard was sent to be trained by Storm Dog Tactical, an organization that specializes in training dogs for K9 police units. Now that he's been fully trained, he's ready for certification as official police material. Leonard is set to start his new job this weekend, and we couldn't be more proud. Venezuela Supreme Court judges hit with U.S. sanctions Posted: 18 May 2017 05:59 PM PDT By Patricia Zengerle and Matt Spetalnick WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Trump administration imposed sanctions on the chief judge and seven other members of Venezuela's Supreme Court on Thursday as punishment for annulling the opposition-led Congress earlier this year, U.S. officials said. The new sanctions package was aimed at stepping up pressure on the leftist government of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his loyalists amid growing concern over a crackdown on street protests and his efforts to consolidate his rule over the South American oil-producing country. The move provoked condemnation from Venezuelan Foreign Minister Delcy Rodriguez. |

Russian hacking has got even worse since the election Posted: 18 May 2017 07:02 PM PDT Donald Trump still seems to dispute Russia's meddling with last year's US presidential elections, even if all the great intel he's been getting says otherwise. Furthermore, he keeps insisting there are no hidden ties between him and Russia, and that the entire Russia investigation is a major witch hunt. But a scathing new report reveals that Russia's hacks that came to light during the election might be just the tip of the iceberg. Russia's cyber attacks under Trump have apparently continued after the election showing an impressive degree of sophistication. What's more disturbing is that the report is based on information coming from sources familiar with spying operations. And that means Trump may have known all along about Russia's intensified spying efforts well before inviting Russia officials at the White House.
The fascinating report into Russia's sophisticated hacking operations against the US comes from Time magazine. The publication reveals that on March 2nd, a "disturbing report" hit the desks of US counterintelligence officials in Washington — Time makes no reference to Trump seeing the report, but if all these allegations are true, it's likely the most powerful TV show producer in the country was also informed about the matter since then. "It described how Russia had already moved on from the rudimentary email hacks against politicians it had used in 2016," Time writes. "Now the Russians were running a more sophisticated hack on Twitter. The report said the Russians had sent expertly tailored messages carrying malware to more than 10,000 Twitter users in the Defense Department. Depending on the interests of the targets, the messages offered links to stories on recent sporting events or the Oscars, which had taken place the previous weekend. When clicked, the links took users to a Russian-controlled server that downloaded a program allowing Moscow's hackers to take control of the victim's phone or computer–and Twitter account." What the Russians are looking to do with these operations is to influence in real-time American people who are hooked on social media. "What chaos could Moscow unleash with thousands of Twitter handles that spoke in real time with the authority of the armed forces of the United States?," spies investigating the newly discovered Russian attacks wondered. "At any given moment, perhaps during a natural disaster or a terrorist attack, Pentagon Twitter accounts might send out false information. As each tweet corroborated another, and covert Russian agents amplified the messages even further afield, the result could be panic and confusion." Time also explains that the first time US officials got wind of Russia's plans to interfere with the election was all the way back in May 2016. At the time, however, they did not know what to do with that information. "[A] Russian military intelligence officer bragged to a colleague that his organization, known as the GRU, was getting ready to pay Clinton back for what President Vladimir Putin believed was an influence operation she had run against him five years earlier as Secretary of State," Time explains. "The GRU, he said, was going to cause chaos in the upcoming US election." The report says the attack on the US election has been five years in the making, and that Russia's current social manipulation powers may be unmatched. "We are on the verge of having something in the information arena which will allow us to talk to the Americans as equals," Putin adviser Andrey Krutskikh said in February 2016. He said Russia's cyber weapons are comparable to the Soviet Union obtaining a nuclear weapon in the 1940s. "The Russians are 10 years ahead of us in being willing to make use of" social media to influence public opinion, former NSA deputy Chris Inglis said. Ironically, Russia is using American services like Facebook, Twitter, and Google to influence opinions, while one of the engineers who's working on these social algorithms has been trained in the US. Time's full report is available at this link and it's worth a read. It will also appear in the May 29th issue of Time. |
Iran counts votes after big turnout in presidential election Posted: 19 May 2017 03:24 PM PDT By Parisa Hafezi and Babak Dehghanpisheh DUBAI/BEIRUT (Reuters) - Vote counting began in Iran on Saturday after a high turnout in an unexpectedly tight presidential election pitting President Hassan Rouhani, who wants to normalize ties with the West, against a hardline judge who says he has already gone too far. More than 40 million votes were cast, the interior ministry said, indicating a turnout of about 70 percent in Friday's vote, roughly similar to the showing in 2013 elections when Rouhani swept into office in a landslide victory. Pro-reform news websites said Rouhani was the victor. |

China urges S.Korea to 'remove obstacles' to good ties Posted: 18 May 2017 03:07 AM PDT China's foreign minister urged South Korea's new government on Thursday to remove "obstacles" to good relations amid Chinese anger at the US deployment of an anti-missile system on the Korean peninsula. Greeting South Korean presidential envoy Lee Hae-Chan in Beijing, Foreign Minister Wang Yi said bilateral relations have made immense progress over the years. "But this year we've had some undeserved setbacks," Wang said, likely in a veiled reference to the Terminal High Altitude Area Defence (THAAD) system that became operational earlier this month. |
US judge dismisses discrimination suit by Texas 'clock boy' Posted: 19 May 2017 01:39 PM PDT A court in Texas has dismissed a lawsuit by the family of a Muslim teen who was invited to the White House by Barack Obama after having constructed a clock that police mistook for a bomb. Ahmed Mohamed, who was 14 at the time, became an internet sensation after being handcuffed and detained for hours for bringing his "invention" -- a circuit board wired to a digital display -- to school in the Texas city of Irving, near Dallas. Ahmed said he merely wanted to show his work to a new teacher to impress her. |

Venezuela sends 2,000 troops to state hit by looting, protests Posted: 17 May 2017 05:53 PM PDT By Anggy Polanco SAN CRISTOBAL, Venezuela (Reuters) - Venezuela said it was sending 2,000 soldiers on Wednesday to a border state that is a hotspot of anti-government radicalism after looting that killed a 15-year-old in the latest unrest roiling the nation. Most shops and businesses in San Cristobal, capital of Tachira state on the Colombian border, were closed and guarded by soldiers on Wednesday, though looting continued in some poorer sectors, residents said. People made off with items including coffee, diapers, and cooking oil in the OPEC nation where a brutal economic crisis has made basic foods and medicine disappear from shelves. |

Treasury's Mnuchin concerned about alternate scoring models of Trump tax plan Posted: 18 May 2017 03:08 PM PDT By Lindsay Dunsmuir WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin told lawmakers on Thursday that he has some doubts that what are known as alternate scoring models will give enough credit to the potential for economic growth when assessing the impact of the Trump administration's tax plan. In late April, the administration put out a one-page overview of its tax reform plans, which would cut taxes for businesses to 15 percent, as well as cutting taxes and simplifying income tax brackets for individuals. Critics questioned how the tax cuts would be offset without driving up the federal deficit. |

Saudis eye Iran and ignore Trump's temperament as red carpet rolled out Posted: 19 May 2017 04:02 AM PDT Saudi Arabia has used the Trump visit to amplify his wide-reaching reform program. Saudi Arabia has prepared a spectacular – if wary – welcome for Donald Trump, ignoring mounting concerns about his temperament and insisting that his visit on Saturday will reconfirm the Kingdom's status as a regional force. Gleeful officials say the US president's decision to make Riyadh the first stop in his first foreign trip in office sends a powerful message underlining Saudi Arabia's clout after eight years of strained bilateral ties under Barack Obama. |
