China's dog meat festival opens despite ban rumours Posted: 21 Jun 2017 04:23 AM PDT A notorious Chinese dog meat festival opened on Wednesday with sellers torching the hair off carcasses, butchers chopping slabs of canines and cooks frying up dishes, dispelling rumours that authorities would ban sales this year. After earlier reports of a sales ban at the summer solstice event in the southern city of Yulin, animal rights groups said vendors and officials reached a compromise and set a limit of two dogs on display per stall. Behind two long rows of dog butchers at the Nanqiao market, others sold cow tongues and pork hocks. |
Fatal mauling of teen shows danger Alaska athletes face Posted: 20 Jun 2017 12:17 AM PDT ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) — Patrick Cooper had already turned around after reaching the halfway point in a popular mountain race in Alaska when he somehow veered off the trail and became lost. That's when the 16-year-old Anchorage boy encountered the black bear that would take his life in a rare predatory attack. |

Philippines' Duterte apologises for urban war Posted: 19 Jun 2017 05:34 PM PDT Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte apologised Tuesday for a military offensive that has left the nation's main Muslim city in ruins, but said it was needed to crush militants linked to the Islamic State group. Duterte also vowed that US-backed air strikes on Marawi would continue, as the conflict entered its fifth week with no sign of an end and its reported death toll climbed towards 370. The fighting has seen Marawi, considered the Muslim capital of the largely Catholic Philippines, turn from a bustling trading centre into one resembling war-torn cities in Iraq or Syria. |
Jared Kushner is heading to Israel for peace negotiations Posted: 20 Jun 2017 01:26 PM PDT Jared Kushner, senior White House adviser, speaks during a meeting with technology executives in the Eisenhower Executive Office Building in Washington, D.C., on June 19. President Trump's son-in-law and senior adviser, Jared Kushner, is scheduled to travel to Israel and the Palestinian territories on Wednesday for meetings that the White House says are aimed at "achieving a lasting peace agreement between the Israelis and Palestinians." Kushner will be accompanied by Jason Greenblatt, a Trump adviser whose official title is "assistant to the president and special representative for international negotiations." According to a White House official who discussed the trip with Yahoo News, the pair are two of Trump's "most trusted advisers" and will be spearheading a "peace effort" that is a "top priority" for the president. |

Sessions has retained Washington-based lawyer Charles Cooper, whom spokeswoman Sarah Isgur Flores described as a long-time friend of the former senator. Cooper was present at Sessions' confirmation hearing and again when he testified before the Senate Intelligence Committee earlier this month. |
Democrats look to future after big loss in Georgia election Posted: 21 Jun 2017 12:17 PM PDT By Susan Heavey and Susan Cornwell WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Frustrated Democrats pondered the party's future and questioned its campaign messaging on Wednesday after a demoralizing defeat in a Georgia congressional race widely seen as a referendum on President Donald Trump's young administration. In the most expensive congressional election in U.S. history, Republican Karen Handel, a former Georgia secretary of state, defeated political newcomer Democrat Jon Ossoff by 4 percentage points on Tuesday in a suburban Atlanta district that Republicans have held since the 1970s. The special election, to fill the seat vacated by Tom Price after Trump appointed him as secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, does not change the balance of power in Washington, where Republicans control the White House and both chambers of Congress. |

Is this really what Apple’s iPhone 8 is going to look like? Posted: 21 Jun 2017 06:43 AM PDT Apple's iPhone 8 release date grows closer with each passing day. We don't know exactly when it will be, of course, but a late September or early to mid October launch is looking increasingly likely. Apple typically releases new iPhone models in September, and it's likely that the iPhone 7s and iPhone 7s Plus will go on sale at some point that month. According to reports, however, difficulties getting the iPhone 8's new in-screen Touch ID fingerprint scanner ready for mass production will delay the release of the iPhone 8. As always, nothing is official until Apple makes it official during its September press conference. But just as we've seen in recent years, it appears as though Apple's iPhone 8 design has leaked well ahead of the phone's unveiling. Now, new photos and a video show posted on Twitter recently may show the familiar design of Apple's unreleased flagship iPhone yet again. According to recent leaks and rumors, Apple's iPhone 8 design has been finalized. The phone will feature 2.5D glass on the front and back, with Apple having opted for glass instead of metal on the back in order to offer wireless charging support. Sandwiched between the two sheets of glass is reportedly a stainless steel midframe that is rounded and polished at the edges. The front of Apple's iPhone 8 is something of a sore spot right now for many people. If recent rumors pan out, Apple's iPhone 8 has very narrow bezels around the screen, but there's a huge chunk near the top of the display that is cut out to make room for the ear speaker, camera, and other sensors. It looks pretty awful, just like the Essential phone, though there is one way Apple could salvage the design and actually make it beautiful. We've all seen the renders, and now there's a design for a 3D printed model floating around out there to let anyone print their own iPhone 8 dummy model. Twitter user Benjamin Geskin recently posted photos of the model, noting that people should DM him if they want one of their own. It's unclear if he's selling mockups or simply offering to send people the files needed to 3D print their own (UPDATE: A reader emailed to let us know that he is offering to sell the 3D files that will allow people to print their own iPhone 8 dummy). It's still not confirmed that this is the final iPhone 8 design, of course. It's also unclear why this 3D printed mockup has a sunken area where the display would be — no leaks at this point have suggested that there will be a raised border around the perimeter of the iPhone 8's front side. Here's a video of the iPhone 8 mockup in someone's hand: https://twitter.com/VenyaGeskin1/status/877261813666238465 |

Islamic militants take hostages at Philippine school: army Posted: 21 Jun 2017 04:35 AM PDT Islamic militants occupied a primary school and took hostages in a southern Philippine village on Wednesday, a few hours drive from a city where other jihadists were fighting a month-long war, authorities said. Encinas said the gunmen had planted improvised bombs around the school, a small building in a rural area, and that soldiers had surrounded it. The unrest occurred in Pigkawayan, a farming town about 160 kilometres (100 miles) from Marawi city where fighters linked to the Islamic State (IS) group have been battling troops for a month in a conflict that has claimed hundreds of lives. |

Russia, Iran sanctions bill hits roadblock in U.S. House Posted: 20 Jun 2017 02:02 PM PDT By Patricia Zengerle WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Legislation to impose new sanctions on Russia and Iran that passed the U.S. Senate nearly unanimously last week has run into a procedural problem that could prevent a quick vote in the House of Representatives, lawmakers said on Tuesday. The Countering Iran's Destabilizing Activities Act, which also includes new sanctions against Russia, passed the Senate 98-2 last week, an overwhelming vote that looked like it might complicate President Donald Trump's desire for warmer relations with Moscow. |

Amazon will now ship you clothing just to try it on, for free Posted: 20 Jun 2017 01:41 PM PDT Shopping on Amazon is one of the most painless ways to buy things these days — and that simplicity is one of the big reasons why the company has continued to grow at a breakneck pace — but when it comes to buying clothes, being able to see, touch, and try on a new item is still a win for the mall. That could change rather quickly, as Amazon just revealed a new "try before you buy" option called Prime Wardrobe. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EIQh0O3wOdM Prime Wardrobe is exactly what you're probably thinking it is: You pick clothes from Amazon Fashion, the company ships them to you to try on, and then you send whatever you don't want right back to Amazon, for free. You only pay for the items you keep, and Amazon will sweeten the deal by offering discounts based on the number of pieces you choose to hang on to, with up to 20% off. For the stuff you want to return, each Prime Wardrobe shipment comes with a return label that you slap right on the box it came in, and then set it outside to be whisked away back to the company's warehouse. You get a total of seven days to make the decision on each Wardrobe shipment, which is a pretty generous window. Amazon says there will be over one million items included in the Prime Wardrobe program, including lots of extremely popular brands like Levi's, Adidas, Hugo Boss, and Calvin Klein. There's no additional fee for the Wardrobe shipments aside from the yearly Prime membership which is required to use the service. The program is currently in a testing phase, but Amazon says it plans to launch it soon. |

Islamic militants attack Philippine village: army Posted: 21 Jun 2017 08:19 AM PDT Islamic militants launched a day-long assault on a southern Philippine village Wednesday during which they held 31 people hostage inside a school, authorities said, raising fears of spreading violence as other jihadists fought a month-long urban war nearby. "It's all resolved, all the hostages have been accounted for, no one was hurt," military spokesman Brigadier General Restituto Padilla told AFP by phone on Wednesday night. Padilla and a local military spokesman said the militants were able to use the cover of darkness to escape, while leaving their 31 hostages unharmed. |

Posted: 20 Jun 2017 05:28 AM PDT Donald Trump's handling of the Russia investigation has pushed him towards an even lower approval rating, a new poll has found. A CBS survey of more than 1,000 adults across the US discovered that just 36 per cent approve of the President, five months into his first term, the lowest point recorded so far. One catalyst for those relatively poor ratings is the on-going investigation into ties between Russia and his administration before the election. |
Italy chides EU partners for lack of solidarity in migrant crisis Posted: 20 Jun 2017 06:23 PM PDT By Steve Scherer ROME (Reuters) - Italy on Tuesday said migrant arrivals by sea were up by a quarter this year and chided European Union partners who refused to offer a helping hand to those who flee their troubled homelands. Two days before European leaders meet in Brussels to discuss migration policy and other issues, Italy's Interior Ministry said 71,000 migrants have been rescued at sea this year, 26 percent more than the same period last year. Last week, the European Commission opened a legal case against Poland, Hungary and the Czech Republic for refusing to take in asylum seekers under a 2015 plan to relocate migrants from frontline states Greece and Italy. |
