Damascus bomber kills 18 after car chase Posted: 02 Jul 2017 08:33 AM PDT A suicide car bomber pursued by security forces blew himself up in eastern Damascus on Sunday, with a monitor reporting 18 killed in the deadliest attack to hit the Syrian capital in months. Syrian state media and the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights monitoring group said security forces intercepted three car bombers on their way into the city early in the morning. A third managed to reach the eastern Tahrir Square district, where the driver was surrounded but able to detonate a bomb. |

Chicago schools make partial payment to teachers' pensions Posted: 30 Jun 2017 05:41 PM PDT The cash-strapped Chicago Public Schools (CPS) said it sent $464 million to its teachers' pension fund by Friday's fiscal year-end deadline, leaving an additional $250 million payment to be made in the fall. Unlike other Illinois school districts, which are part of a state-wide teachers retirement system subsidized with state dollars, CPS has its own pension fund. "Only CPS has to take hundreds of millions of dollars out of the classroom for teacher pensions, but despite the unfairness of this law, CPS is meeting its obligation to our teachers' pensions today," CPS CEO Forrest Claypool said in a statement. |

Tanker and freighter collide off Britain Posted: 01 Jul 2017 07:58 AM PDT A tanker and a cargo ship collided off Britain on Saturday on one of the world's busiest shipping routes, but no injuries or spills were reported, authorities said. The tanker had 38,000 tonnes of petrol onboard when it collided at around 0100 GMT with a 220-metre (720-foot) cargo vessel in the Strait of Dover, which is where the North Sea and the Channel meet. "Although both vessels have been damaged, there is no water ingress and no pollution," Britain's maritime and coastguard agency said. |

U.S., Philippines hold naval patrol to deter Islamist militants Posted: 30 Jun 2017 10:51 PM PDT The United States and Philippine navies held a joint naval patrol on Saturday in dangerous southern Philippine waters, amid rising international concern about Islamist militancy and piracy in the region. US Navy littoral combat ship USS Coronado joined a Philippine Navy frigate, BRP Alcaraz, in patrolling the Sulu Sea where numerous pirate attacks on commercial shipping have been made since 2015. "Our at-sea operations with the Philippine Navy demonstrate our commitment to the alliance and deter piracy and illegal activities," US Rear Admiral Don Gabrielson said in a statement issued by the US embassy in Manila. |

Central America hit by massive power outages Posted: 01 Jul 2017 08:19 PM PDT San José (AFP) - A huge power outage plunged millions of people across Central America into darkness Saturday, as authorities from Panama to Costa Rica to El Salvador scrambled to restore electrical service. The blackout affected some five million people in Costa Rica alone, where officials largely had managed to restore service after a nationwide power outage lasting about five hours. Authorities pinned blame for the power outages on a downed Panamanian transmission line that adversely affected the power supply for much of the region. |
Rebels accuse Syrian army of chlorine attack, army calls it fabrication Posted: 01 Jul 2017 12:31 PM PDT A Syrian rebel group accused the Syrian army of using chlorine gas against its fighters on Saturday in battles east of Damascus - an accusation the military swiftly denied as a fabrication. The United States said on Wednesday the government of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad appeared so far to have heeded a warning issued earlier in the week not to carry out a chemical weapons attack after saying it saw possible preparations for one. Western governments including the United States say the Syrian government was behind an April gas attack in the town of Khan Sheikhoun that killed dozens. |

Russia bus crash 'kills 14' Posted: 02 Jul 2017 06:08 AM PDT Fourteen people died, two of them children, when a long-haul passenger bus collided with a truck in Russia on Sunday, the authorities said. The bus was travelling from Samara on the Volga river to Izhevsk, around 900 kilometres (550 miles) east of Moscow, when the accident happened, according to the Investigative Committee, which probes major crimes. The bus rolled over and caught on fire as a result of the collision, the regional interior ministry said, adding that it would be arresting both drivers. |
Congo declares Ebola outbreak over after four deaths Posted: 01 Jul 2017 01:59 AM PDT Democratic Republic of Congo declared its two-month Ebola outbreak officially over on Saturday after 42 days without recording a new case of the disease. The outbreak in Congo's remote northeastern forests, a record eighth for the country where the disease was first discovered in 1976, killed four out of the eight people infected, Health Minister Oly Ilunga said in a statement. "I declare on this day, at midnight, the end of the outbreak of the hemorrhagic fever of the Ebola virus in DRC," Ilunga said. |
Drone kills two Qaeda suspects in Yemen Posted: 02 Jul 2017 08:29 AM PDT A drone strike likely to have been carried out by the United States killed two suspected Al-Qaeda members in southern Yemen, a security official said on Sunday. One of the suspects was identified as Ibrahim al-Adani, who was said to have run Al-Qaeda's finances in the region. The United States considers the Yemen-based Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, or AQAP, to be the group's most dangerous branch and has conducted a long-running drone war against its leaders. |

US planning to create 'Space Corps' as sixth branch of armed forces Posted: 01 Jul 2017 05:58 AM PDT The House Armed Services Committee has voted to create a US "Space Corps", which would become a new branch of the armed forces and incorporate the current space missions of the US Air Force. If the US Space Corps goes ahead, it would be the first new military service in the country since 1947. The move has caused consternation as committee members of the panel say they were only recently informed, giving them little time to protest against the proposal. |
What Is the Difference Between Key Limes and Conventional Limes? Posted: 01 Jul 2017 07:00 AM PDT Well, in the case of "regular" limes vs. Key limes, the truth is, not a ton. Of course there's more separating the two than meets the eye, but the differences are fairly minute and, indeed, the two can often be used interchangeably in recipes without risk of total disaster. Key limes are smaller than the standard Persian limes and have thin, leathery skin. |
May could walk out of Brexit talks over exit bill: Telegraph Posted: 01 Jul 2017 04:33 PM PDT British business leaders have been told to brace for the possibility that Prime Minister Theresa May's government may walk out of Brexit talks this year, according to the Sunday Telegraph. The move would be designed for "domestic consumption" to show the government is negotiating hard with the European Union, the newspaper reported. The Sunday Telegraph said the briefing of business leaders by a senior May aide took place after last month's general election and the person has since left in the recent overhaul at the top of government. |

Californians take a shine to solar power Posted: 01 Jul 2017 06:57 PM PDT Jacquie Barnbrook had grown tired of the high electricity bills and her gas-guzzling luxury car when she finally decided to take the plunge last year. The 52-year-old Los Angeles resident joined an ever-growing number of Californians who are switching to solar power for their energy needs in a bid to not only save money but to also do their part for the environment in a state setting the pace for the rest of the country in that sector. Nearly 4.9 million homes are powered by solar energy in California -- the nation's green trailblazer and the most populous state -- and that number is expected to continue to grow, according to the Solar Energy Industries Association, a non-profit trade association. |
Indian woman attacked with acid for fifth time: police Posted: 02 Jul 2017 08:35 AM PDT A woman who survived an alleged gang rape and four separate acid attacks has once again been hit by corrosive liquid, Indian police said Sunday. The 35-year-old mother, who was allegedly gangraped in 2008 over a property dispute, was at a women's hostel in Uttar Pradesh state capital Lucknow when a man scaled the walls and poured the chemical onto her. The attacker fled from the spot," Vivek Tripathi, local police chief told AFP. |
Tokyo governor's party heads for big win in city election Posted: 02 Jul 2017 08:50 AM PDT TOKYO (AP) — The new party of the Japanese capital's populist governor appeared headed for a thumping victory Sunday over Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's scandal-laden ruling party in a Tokyo assembly election that could alter national politics, with Abe's historic defeat likely making it difficult for him to achieve his agenda. |
Posted: 01 Jul 2017 03:00 AM PDT "We are stunned ... by the call to close down Al Jazeera Satellite network and its affiliates ... [to end the] recent boycott against Qatar...," states an editorial. "The call for shutting down a popular, internationally recognised news network for political reasons is a regressive move on many counts. "Jamaica has good reasons to pay attention to the row, led by Saudi Arabia, between Qatar and ... its Gulf neighbours.... But there is a larger issue at play ... the matter of sovereignty...," states an editorial. |
CNPC gas pipeline blast kills eight, injures 35: Xinhua Posted: 02 Jul 2017 07:43 AM PDT At least eight people died and another 35 were injured in a natural gas pipeline explosion in southwest China's Guizhou Province on Sunday, Xinhua news agency reported. 'Whoever Controls Benghazi Controls Libya' Posted: 01 Jul 2017 04:00 AM PDT BENGHAZI, Libya — We fight terrorism for the sake of the world, reads the billboard overlooking one of this strife-torn city's upscale streets. It also bears the visage of a mustachioed, uniformed man—Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar, Libya's most powerful and polarizing figure. Coming from him, the billboard's message is a most striking assertion. |
