Iran hunts for survivors as quake kills 400 near Iraq border Posted: 13 Nov 2017 11:55 AM PST Teams of Iranian rescuers dug through rubble in a hunt for survivors Monday after a major earthquake struck the Iran-Iraq border, killing at least 421 people and injuring thousands. The 7.3-magnitude quake rocked a border area 30 kilometres (20 miles) southwest of Halabja in Iraqi Kurdistan at around 9:20 pm (1820 GMT) on Sunday, the US Geological Survey said. Many people would have been at home when the quake hit in Iran's western province of Kermanshah, where authorities said it killed at least 413 people and injured 6,700. |

Israel signals free hand in Syria as U.S., Russia expand truce Posted: 12 Nov 2017 10:21 AM PST By Dan Williams JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Israel signaled on Sunday that it would keep up military strikes across its frontier with Syria to prevent any encroachment by Iranian-allied forces, even as the United States and Russia try to build up a ceasefire in the area. U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin on Saturday affirmed joint efforts to stabilize Syria as its civil war wanes, including with the expansion of a July 7 truce in the southwestern triangle bordering Israel and Jordan. A U.S. State Department official said Russia had agreed "to work with the Syrian regime to remove Iranian-backed forces a defined distance" from the Golan Heights frontier with Israel, which captured the plateau in the 1967 Middle East war. |
Iran-Iraq earthquake: More than 400 dead as 7.3 magnitude earthquake strikes near border Posted: 13 Nov 2017 01:55 AM PST Iranian rescue teams were struggling Monday to reach isolated villages cut off by landslides after a 7.3 magnitude earthquake which killed more than 400 people and injured almost 7,000. The powerful earthquake struck the Iran-Iraq border region on Sunday night, shaking the Middle East as far as Israel and Turkey, but the worst of the devastation was borne in western Iran. Iran said at least 407 people had been killed but the death toll was expected to rise as rescuers reached more remote parts of the mountainous Kermanshah province. Another 6,700 people were injured. At least seven people were killed in Iraq's Kurdish region and more than 300 were reportedly taken to hospital with injuries. The earthquake was the worst in Iran since 2005, when 612 people were killed in the country's southeast. It was also the deadliest earthquake of 2017, overtaking the 369 people killed in Mexico City in September. A collapsed house is seen hours after the 7.3 magnitude earthquake Credit: Anadolu Agency/Getty Images Iran's government said it was mobilising the army, militia forces, and the elite Revolutionary Guard Corps to help with relief efforts but as the sun set on Monday rescuers were still struggling to reach parts of the disaster zone. Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khameini, exhorted rescue teams to move as quickly as possible while there was still a chance to save people buried by the quake. "It is the duty of the authorities in these first hours with all their determination and ability to help the injured, especially those trapped under the rubble," he said. Graphic: Iraq earthquake Aid workers used rescue dogs and heat sensors to try to find those trapped inside collapsed buildings while helicopters and heavy construction equipment were brought in to support the search. More than 200 people were reportedly killed in Sarpol-e Zahab, a city of around 34,000 people which sits a few miles from the Iraqi border. Photographs from the scene showed buildings that had completely collapsed and a mother weeping in the street as she held the body of her young daughter. Another woman and her baby were pulled from rubble, according to local media. In one video posted online on Monday morning, a resident said soldiers were working to help people without gloves or any special equipment and there was no sign of rescue teams. "Our electricity, water, gas, phone lines are out, everything is completely out, the whole city has been destroyed, it is wrecked." Eshaq Jahangiri, one of Iran's vice presidents, said many of the buildings which had collapsed had been built under the Mehr Housing Project, a government building programme championed by former president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. Mr Jahangiri said there would be an investigation into the structures, which were build for poor Iranians as a part of Mr Ahmadinejad's populist domestic policies. Boris Johnson, the foreign secretary, offered "deepest condolences" to both Iran and Iraq. "The UK stands ready to help the victims and the recovery effort," said Mr Johnson, who is expected to visit Iran in the coming weeks. The Pope and other world leaders also sent their sympathies. "Upon the injured and the emergency and civil authorities engaged in rescue and recovery efforts, His Holiness invokes the divine blessings of consolation and strength," a Vatican spokesman said. Mourners gather around the body of one of the victims Credit: Reuters The Turkish Red Crescent dispatched 33 aid trucks to the Iraqi city of Sulaimaniyah while Turkey's military flew a cargo plane with aid and rescue workers into Iraq. Turkey said it was prepared to help Iran also if aid was requested. The earthquake struck Iraq's Kurdish region just weeks after fighting between Iraqi government forces and Kurdish troops after a disputed independence referendum. Baghdad said it would help all Iraqis, regardless of the recent tensions in the area. Sherwana Castle, an historic 18th century fortress built by a Kurdish king, appeared to have been badly damaged by the quake. |

Woman avoids 10 years in jail for marrying her mother after they 'hit it off' Posted: 13 Nov 2017 03:54 AM PST A woman who reportedly married her estranged mother after the pair later "hit it off" when they got back in contact has avoided a potential 10-year jail sentence. Misty Velvet Dawn Spann, 25, hadn't seen mother Patricia Spann, 43, since her childhood, when Patricia lost custody of her and two other siblings who were put up for adoption, court records show. Social services officials later discovered the incestuous relationship between the mother and daughter – which is illegal – and the pair were arrested and taken into custody. |

Lebanon's Hariri shackled by bigger outside forces Posted: 13 Nov 2017 01:23 PM PST By Angus McDowall BEIRUT (Reuters) - Nothing so encapsulated the political shackles in which Saad al-Hariri has operated as Lebanon's prime minister as the way he resigned in a televised statement made from Saudi Arabia. The dependence of their leaders on powerful external patrons is nothing new in Lebanon, where regional powers from Saudi Arabia to Iran have long tussled for geopolitical advantage. In an interview on Sunday, he said he will return to Lebanon in the coming days and might reconsider his resignation. |
Zimbabwe army chief warns Mugabe's party that military may intervene after sackings Posted: 13 Nov 2017 11:11 AM PST Zimbabwe's army chief on Monday demanded an end to the purge in the ruling Zanu-PF party, and warned the military could intervene. Following the sacking of vice president, Emmerson Mnangagwa, Zimbabwe armed forces commander, Constantine Chiwenga said the security services would stop those "bent on hijacking the revolution." General Chiwenga spoke at a Harare press conference on the "instability" in Zanu-PF, alongside some 90 senior military figures. Mr Mnangagwa was sacked last week by president Robert Mugabe, along with several other party members. The former vice president was also expelled from Zanu PF, a party he served for more then 40 years, most of them at Mr Mugabe's side. "We must remind those behind the current treacherous shenanigans that when it comes to matters of protecting our revolution, the military will not hesitate to step in." "The current purging which is clearly targeting members of the party with liberation [war] backgrounds must stop forthwith. There is distress, trepidation and despondency within the nation," he said. There were clashes in central Harare in August between the Zimbabwe Republic Police - loyal to first lady Grace Mugabe and her allies in a Zanu-PF faction, G40 - and soldiers who are loyal to Mr Mnangagwa. Later that month, Mr Mnangagwa claimed he was poisoned at a rally addressed by Mr Mugabe, and was airlifted by a military aircraft to South Africa where he spent nearly two weeks in hospital. Mr Mnangagwa, 75, left the country after being dismissed and arrived in Johannesburg last Wednesday. Robert Mugabe profile Under orders from Mr Mugabe, he is accused of organising the murder of thousands of opposition supporters since independence from the UK in 1980. He issued a five page statement when he left Zimbabwe last week saying he would return and would lead resistance to Mr Mugabe. "We will soon control the levers of power in our beautiful party and country," he said. Many veterans of the war against white-ruled Rhodesia have turned against Mr and Mrs Mugabe and the G40 faction. Mrs Mugabe and her supporters, without providing any evidence, claim Mr Mnangagwa planned to take power from Mr Mugabe who is standing for re election next year. Mrs Mugabe told a rally in Harare ten days ago that Mr Mnangagwa had plotted against her husband since independence. General Chiwenga's contract as leader of the armed forces expired in July, and it is not clear whether Mr Mugabe will keep him on in his job. Last weekend, several members of the Zimbabwe National Army told reporters, in confidence, that they could not afford to object to Mr Mnangagwa's sacking as they "needed their jobs." |

Lebanese president presses Saudi to say why Hariri has not returned Posted: 12 Nov 2017 05:40 AM PST By Ellen Francis BEIRUT (Reuters) - Lebanon's president called on Saudi Arabia on Saturday to clarify why Lebanese Prime Minister Saad al-Hariri could not return home, a week after he stunned his country by resigning while in the kingdom. A senior Lebanese official said President Michel Aoun had told foreign ambassadors Hariri had been "kidnapped" and should have immunity. Hariri's shock resignation has thrust Lebanon back into the frontline of a power struggle between Sunni Saudi Arabia and Shi'ite Iran - a rivalry that has wrought upheaval in Syria, Iraq, Yemen, and Bahrain. |

Joe Biden says he would never have replaced Hillary Clinton in 2016 presidential race if asked Posted: 13 Nov 2017 07:12 AM PST Former Vice President Joe Biden says that there is no way he would have ever agreed to replace Hillary Clinton as the 2016 Democratic nominee, even though he had reservations about her campaign tactics. Mr Biden was asked about former Democratic National Committee chair Donna Brazile's claim in her new book, "Hacks", where she said she'd considered replacing Ms Clinton with Mr Biden over health concerns. The former vice president and senator who supported Ms Clinton with both an endorsement and relentless campaigning for the Democratic nominee as election day grew closer last year, has cited trauma over his son Beau's death as a major deciding factor in his ultimate absence from the race. |
Southeast Asia summit draft statement skips over Rohingya crisis Posted: 12 Nov 2017 09:25 PM PST A draft of the statement to be issued after a Southeast Asian summit makes no mention of the exodus of Rohingya Muslims from Myanmar's Rakhine state following a military crackdown that has been described by the United Nations as ethnic cleansing. One paragraph of the communique, seen by Reuters on Monday, mentions the importance of humanitarian relief provided for victims of natural disasters in Vietnam and a recent urban battle with Islamist militants in the Philippines, as well as "affected communities" in northern Rakhine state. |

Posted: 12 Nov 2017 09:04 AM PST President Donald Trump poses a threat to American national security because he is vulnerable to being "played" by Russia, according to two former intelligence chiefs. Their comments on Sunday came after Mr Trump tried to walk back his claim that he believed Vladimir Putin's denials that Russia did not meddle in last year's American election. But John Brennan, former director of the CIA, and James Clapper, former director of the National Security Agency, condemned his refusal to push back hard against the Russian president Putin and his role in trying to sway the outcome. Mr Brennan told CNN's State of the Union: "I think it demonstrates to Mr Putin that Donald Trump can be played by foreign leaders who are going to appeal to his ego and try to play upon his insecurities, which is very, very worrisome from a national security standpoint." The American president has been dogged by questions about the Russia scandal during his five-nation visit to Asia. Donald Trump talks with Rodrigo Duterte, president of the Philippines, during a gala dinner after arriving in Manlia on the final leg of his five-nation tour of Asia Credit: Reuters On Saturday, Mr Trump's said he accepted the sincerity of Mr Putin's denials. "Every time he sees me, he says: 'I didn't do that.' And I believe — I really believe — that when he tells me that, he means it," he told reporters aboard Air Force One. Later that day, he tried to clarify his remarks, insisting he did trust his intelligence agencies which had come to a different conclusion. "I believe that [Mr Putin] feels that he and Russia did not meddle in the election," said Mr Trump at a news conference in Hanoi. "As to whether I believe it, I'm with our agencies. As currently led by fine people, I believe very much in our intelligence agencies." Former CIA Director John Brennan says it is "puzzling" why President Trump doesn't call our Russian President Vladimir Putin for meddling in the 2016 election #CNNSOTUhttps://t.co/3tSTZ9Cgqp— CNN (@CNN) November 12, 2017 He also said he did not believe Mr Putin was personally involved and lashed out at former heads of US intelligence agencies – including Mr Brennan and Mr Clapper - calling them "political hacks". The CIA and other agencies have presented evidence that Russian officials, directed by Mr Putin, tried to help Mr Trump defeat his rival, Hillary Clinton. A federal investigation into whether Mr Trump's team colluded with that effort has already led to charges against three members of the campaign. There's nothing "America First" about taking the word of KGB colonel over US intelligence community. There's no "principled realism" in cooperating w/ Russia to prop up murderous Assad regime. To believe otherwise is naive & places nat'l security at risk. https://t.co/SYiVHtHXPX— John McCain (@SenJohnMcCain) November 11, 2017 But former senior intelligence officials say they are mystified about Mr Trump's failure to take a tougher line. James Clapper, former director of National Intelligence, told CNN: "Putin is committed to undermining our system, our democracy and our whole process. To try to paint it in any other way is, I think, astounding and poses a peril to this country." Mr Trump arrived in the Philippines yesterday on the final leg of his trip. The American president has previously praised the country's violent war on drugs, despite allegations of widespread extrajudicial killings. Trump says Putin's insulted by election interference claims 01:07 His host, Rodrigo Duterte, has sometimes been called the "Trump of the East" for his brash, no-holds-barred style. Mr Trump has frequently been at odds with Asian and Pacific leaders who are forging ahead with free-trade deals. And hours before they were due to meet, Mr Duterte delivered another snub, casting further doubt on American economic leadership in the region. "Today China is the number one economic power, and we have to be friends," he told a business conference in Manila. |

Green Beret killed by 'two Navy SEALs after he uncovered alleged theft' Posted: 13 Nov 2017 07:39 AM PST Two Navy SEALs reportedly being investigated over the death of an Army Green Beret in Mali are accused of killing him after he learned they had been allegedly stealing. Two special operations sources who remained unnamed told the Daily Beast the members of the US Navy's elite SEAL team – which stands for "Sea, Air, and Land" – under investigation over the death of Logan J Melgar had been taking money from a fund utilised to pay informants. Mr Melgar was a Special Forces Engineer in the US Army Special Forces which is colloquially referred to as the Green Berets because of their distinctive headwear. |
