Poll: Melania Trump still not as popular as Michelle Obama Posted: 06 Dec 2017 11:42 AM PST First lady Melania Trump appears to be getting more popular, according to a new Rasmussen Reports poll released Wednesday. Fifty-three percent of those polled said they had at least a somewhat favorable view of the first lady, which is an 8 percent increase from those who felt the same shortly after the 2016 presidential election. Thirty-six percent of participants answered that they held an unfavorable view of Trump and 11 percent were listed undecided. |

Exclusive: U.S. asks Israel to restrain response to Jerusalem move - document Posted: 06 Dec 2017 06:24 PM PST By Arshad Mohammed WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The United States is asking Israel to temper its response to the U.S. recognition of Jerusalem as its capital because Washington expects a backlash and is weighing the potential threat to U.S. facilities and people, according to a State Department document seen by Reuters on Wednesday. "While I recognize that you will publicly welcome this news, I ask that you restrain your official response," the document dated Dec. 6 said in talking points for diplomats at the U.S. Embassy in Tel Aviv to convey to Israeli officials. A second State Department document seen by Reuters, which was also dated Dec. 6, said the agency had formed an internal task force "to track worldwide developments" following the U.S. decision on Jerusalem. |

Russian military: mission accomplished, Islamic State defeated in Syria Posted: 07 Dec 2017 05:50 AM PST Russia's military said on Thursday it had accomplished its mission of defeating Islamic State in Syria, and there were no remaining settlements there under the group's control. Russian bombers had used unprecedented force in the final stages to finish off the militant group, a senior Russian officer said. "The mission to defeat bandit units of the Islamic State terrorist organization on the territory of Syria, carried out by the armed forces of the Russian Federation, has been accomplished," Colonel-General Sergei Rudskoi, head of the general staff's operations, said on Rossiya 24 TV channel. |
The XB-70 Valkyrie: The Sad Story of the Biggest and Fastest U.S. Bomber Ever Posted: 06 Dec 2017 04:53 PM PST With the growing realization that Soviet SAMs posed an increasing threat to American bombers, the Pentagon started to explore low-level penetration as an alternative. Many leading military strategists of the time believed bombers were too vulnerable to survive the journey into Soviet airspace. As a result, President John F. Kennedy decided to cancel the XB-70 as a frontline bomber program on March 28, 1961. |
Everyone's sharing this video of a man saving a rabbit from the California wildfires Posted: 07 Dec 2017 09:28 AM PST Destructive wildfires have torn across thousands of acres in Southern California since Monday night, destroying homes, forcing evacuations, and displacing thousands of residents as a result. In the days since, nightmarish photos and videos of three massive wildfires in the Los Angeles area have been widely circulated. On Thursday morning, one video in particular seems to have struck a chord for its sweetness: A brief clip that appears to show an unnamed man rescuing a rabbit from the blaze in Ventura County. SEE ALSO: Wildfires lead to hellish scenes for Los Angeles commuters The man in the clip from RMG News (shared on Twitter by ABC News) reportedly declined to share his story on camera. (It should go without saying that getting this close to a wildfire is extremely dangerous and not recommended.) Per CNN, more than 110,000 Southern California residents have been forced to evacuate their homes as the fires spread. Thursday in particular looks to be a potentially devastating day for the area, with exceptionally strong winds and extreme dry air. The Storm Prediction Center estimates that Thursday's conditions will affect 9.5 million people. As Mashable reported, powerful Santa Ana winds have enabled wildfire to move quickly across hundreds of thousands of acres of land, and may continue to do so into Saturday. WATCH: California wildfire victims returning to their destroyed homes is absolutely heart-wrenching |

U.S. to deny visas to Cambodian officials over opposition crackdown Posted: 06 Dec 2017 06:56 PM PST By Eric Walsh and Prak Chan Thul WASHINGTON/PHNOM PENH (Reuters) - The United States said on Wednesday it would restrict entry to people involved in the Cambodian government's actions to undermine democracy, including the dissolution of the main opposition party and imprisonment of its leader. The visa sanctions were the toughest steps by any Western country since a crackdown on critics of Prime Minister Hun Sen ahead of an election next year in which the authoritarian leader seeks to extend more than three decades in power. "We call on the Cambodian government to reverse course by reinstating the political opposition, releasing Kem Sokha, and allowing civil society and media to resume their constitutionally protected activities," the State Department said in a statement. |
Why the U.S. Marines Love the M27 Infantry Automatic Rifle Posted: 06 Dec 2017 04:29 PM PST Marksmanship, the ability to shoot accurately and service targets with the minimum expenditure of ammunition, has always been part of the U.S. Marine Corps ethos. The adoption of the M27 Infantry Automatic Rifle over the older M249 Squad Automatic Weapon marks a return to that ethos across the service at the small unit level. More accurate and capable of accomplishing its mission with fewer expended rounds, the M27 is now being considered as the front-line rifle not only for a handful of squad members but across the Corps' front line units. |

US House approves easing of interstate rules on concealed guns Posted: 06 Dec 2017 07:22 PM PST US lawmakers voted Wednesday to allow gun owners to carry concealed firearms across state lines, a controversial bill that critics say is aimed at undermining national gun control efforts. The move came two months after the worst mass shooting in modern US history, when a gunman who had taken a vast arsenal into a Las Vegas hotel fired down on concert-goers and killed 58. It passed the House of Representatives 231 to 198, after six Democrats joined all but 14 Republicans in supporting the bill, which will also need Senate passage if it is to become law. |

Pope wants better translation of phrase on temptation in 'Our Father' prayer Posted: 07 Dec 2017 03:00 AM PST Pope Francis has said the Roman Catholic Church should adopt a better translation of the phrase "lead us not into temptation" in the "Our Father", the best known prayer in Christianity. "That is not a good translation," the pope said in a television interview on Wednesday night. Francis said the Catholic Church in France had decided to use the phrase "do not let us fall into temptation" as an alternative and indicated that it or something similar should be applied worldwide. |
