No rise in autism in US in past three years: study Posted: 02 Jan 2018 10:06 AM PST After more than a decade of steady increases in the rate of children diagnosed with autism in the United States, the rate has plateaued in the past three years, researchers said Tuesday. The findings were based on a nationwide study in which more than 30,000 parents reported whether or not their children had been diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). "The estimated ASD prevalence was 2.41 percent among US children and adolescents in 2014-2016, with no statistically significant increase over the three years," said the research letter by experts at the University of Iowa, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA). |

Palestinian militant chief in Lebanon camp says he's moved to Syria Posted: 02 Jan 2018 02:35 AM PST A prominent Palestinian militant whose followers have fought other factions in a refugee camp in Lebanon has traveled to Syria, he said, removing one of the main combatants in one of Lebanon's most volatile settlements. A statement by Bilal Badr, who led a hardline Sunni Islamist faction against mainstream Palestinian groups in the Ain el-Hilweh refugee camp at Sidon, did not say when or how he had traveled to Syria. The rebellion against President Bashar al-Assad has drawn militant Sunnis from across the region. |
Hopes raised for release of British human rights activist jailed in Ethiopia Posted: 03 Jan 2018 10:56 AM PST Hopes have been raised that a British human rights activist jailed illegally in Ethiopia could soon be released, after the country's prime minister announced the pardoning of political prisoners and the closure of a prison where he may have been detained and tortured. Andy Tsege, 62, was abducted by Ethiopian security forces in 2014, having been tried and sentenced to death in absentia. The Ethopian government claims he is a terrorist, while human rights campaigners say the father-of-three was illegally detained on politically motivated charges. But in an unexpected announcement on Wednesday, HailemariamDesalegn, the Ethiopian prime minister, said he would drop charges against political prisoners and also close the notorious Maekelawi Prison. "Political prisoners that are facing prosecutions and are already under arrest will be released," Hailemariam said. "And the notorious prison cell that was traditionally called Maekelawi will be closed down and turned into a museum." It remains unclear whether Mr Tesge is among those due to be set free, but human rights campaigners say his release is long overdue and that he has been tortured by his captors. There is a real opportunity for the Ethiopian Government to release British father Andy Tsege after the Ethiopian PM announced some political prisoners will be freed #Ethiopiahttps://t.co/Jbuu57aMgapic.twitter.com/I5kgGtynms— Reprieve (@Reprieve) January 3, 2018 "This is a real opportunity for the Ethiopian government to recognise Andy's desperate situation and ensure he is one of those released. "After being kidnapped, illegally transported to Ethiopia, tortured and locked up on death row for the past three and a half years, it is long past time that Andy is returned to his partner and three children in London," said Maya Foa, director of the legal charity Reprieve, which has supported Mr Tsege's case. The activist was born in Ethiopia but became a British citizen after seeking political asylum in London in 1979, and he has raised a family in the UK. Some of the prominent politicians currently in custody include opposition leaders Bekele Gerba and Merara Gudina. A number of journalists also remain in detention. "Potentially big news," Human Rights Watch researcher Felix Horne said on Twitter after the announcement, as some observers waited to see the government's next move. The protests demanding wider freedoms began in late 2015 and led to hundreds of reported deaths and tens of thousands of arrests while disrupting one of Africa's fastest growing economies. "The crackdown on the political opposition saw mass arbitrary arrests, torture and other ill-treatment, unfair trials and violations of the rights to freedom of expression and association," rights group Amnesty International has said. |
One-of-a-kind 1954 Plymouth concept up for auction Posted: 02 Jan 2018 07:57 AM PST There will be a lot of rare and classic cars going under the hammer at Barrett-Jackson's Scottsdale auction that runs between January 13 and 21 in the US state of Arizona, but cars don't get any rarer than the 1954 Plymouth Belmont concept that could be yours if you were to win the bidding. Motor show concepts are often futuristic and exciting, but until quite recently, most never went anywhere near a production line, even in a very watered-down form. At one point in its life, after its appearance at the New York Auto Show, the car was owned by famed Chrysler designer, Virgil Exner. |

Pakistan allows use of Chinese yuan for trade, investment Posted: 03 Jan 2018 12:14 AM PST Pakistan will allow the Chinese yuan to be used for imports, exports and financing transactions for bilateral trade and investment activities, in a move economists said Wednesday would simplify a massive Chinese investment project. Both public and private sector enterprises may use the yuan for bilateral trade and investment, the central State Bank of Pakistan said in a statement issued Tuesday. "As per current foreign exchange regulations, Chinese Yuan (CNY) is an approved foreign currency for denominating foreign currency transactions in Pakistan," it said. |
