Florida shooting: Tributes paid to 'hero' teacher who died trying to protect students Posted: 15 Feb 2018 05:03 PM PST A teacher who died trying to protect students was among the 17 people killed at a Florida school shooting, a survivor has said. Geography instructor Scott Beigel had unlocked the door to his classroom to try and let in students who were fleeing from a rampaging gunman, according to a student, but was shot down before he could close and re-lock the door. As students and staff at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School have begun processing the brutal aftermath, many are hailing Mr Beigel's sacrifice. |

Turkey, US to 'work together' in Syria after crisis Posted: 16 Feb 2018 01:22 PM PST Turkey and United States on Friday agreed to work together in Syria after weeks of tensions over Ankara's latest cross-border operation that raised fears of a military confrontation between the two NATO allies. US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and his Turkish counterpart Mevlut Cavusoglu said after talks in Ankara that the two sides would set up working groups to solve key issues that have bedevilled relations. "We are not going to act alone any longer, not US doing one thing, Turkey doing another," Tillerson said after the talks. |

Pentagon looks to counter rivals' hypersonic missiles Posted: 15 Feb 2018 12:12 PM PST Even as the Pentagon hustles to ensure that its defenses keep pace with North Korea's fast-growing rocket program, US officials increasingly are turning attention to a new generation of missile threat. The hypersonic missiles could change the face of future warfare, as they can switch direction in flight and do not follow a predictable arc like conventional missiles, making them much harder to track and intercept. "China's hypersonic weapons development outpaces ours... we're falling behind," Admiral Harry Harris, who heads the military's Pacific Command, warned lawmakers on Wednesday. |

"It is clear to us that the situation in Rio during the carnival was unfortunate," Jungmann said in comments after meeting President Michel Temer late Wednesday. Jungmann was referring to a rash of robberies and assaults during the biggest event of the year in Rio, which saw massive street parties before culminating earlier this week with the samba parades. |

'Do you fear me?': Venezuela's Maduro vows to gatecrash regional summit Posted: 15 Feb 2018 12:34 PM PST By Alexandra Ulmer and Vivian Sequera CARACAS (Reuters) - Venezuela's unpopular socialist president Nicolas Maduro said on Thursday his right-wing Latin American counterparts showed intolerance by trying to exclude him from an upcoming summit in Lima - and he vowed to go anyway. Because come rain or shine, by air, land, or sea, I will attend the Summit of the Americas," Maduro told foreign journalists at the Miraflores presidential palace. Peru's center-right government this week said Maduro would not be welcome at the April summit, reinforcing his growing diplomatic isolation during a crackdown on dissent and a brutal economic crisis in Venezuela. |

This 'Black Panther' proposal was perfect, except for one tiny detail Posted: 16 Feb 2018 10:47 AM PST The Black Panther hype is real, and now that the film's finally hit theaters people can barely contain their excitement. Many are dressing up to honor Wakanda, but one man took things a step further, donning a Black Panther outfit and proposing to his girlfriend at a screening in Brooklyn. SEE ALSO: The best Black Panther comics to read if you're amped for the movie The heartfelt moment went down on Thursday night at Brooklyn's Alamo Drafthouse and was documented on Twitter by lucky movie-goers who happened to be in the same theater. Just watched a proposal at the theatre. #BlackPanther — Junebug (@thejunipergoat) February 16, 2018 Wow I'm at @alamodrafthouse in #Brooklyn and dude just proposed to his girl, just wow only #InWakanda #WakandaForever — Seven, the Tenth Man (@7Akil) February 16, 2018 Someone just proposed in my #BlackPanther screening wearing a black panther suit. She said yes. Y'all it's live out here. — Trey Williams (@Trey3Williams) February 16, 2018 So many crazy outfits on display at Alamo Drafthouse for #blackpanther last night. Hector (@TlntdMrHector) February 16, 2018 According to Twitter user @Rob_Pratt the man surprised his girlfriend at the 10:15 p.m. showing, knowing she would be there with her friends. Proposal at 10:15 Black Panther showing at Alamo Drafthouse in Brooklyn, man dressed up as Black Panther proposed to his fiancé (she said yes) who he knew would be here with her girlfriends. He didn't have tickets so left shortly after. #BlackPantherSoLit — Rob Pratt (@Rob_Pratt) February 16, 2018 The moment looked picture-perfect, except for one tiny thing. The grand gesture didn't last too long because the man reportedly didn't have a ticket and had to leave after popping the question. Hmm... Omg a guy next to us in a Black Panther outfit just proposed & she said yes & the theatre exploded in applause pic.twitter.com/fYHZekxtGM — Cory Schmitz (@CorySchmitz) February 16, 2018 While we'd all love to get engaged before watching one of most anticipated movies of all time, it might be nice to not have to say goodbye to your brand new fiancé immediately after accepting and then sit in a dark theater unable to tell your family and friends for two hours and fifteen minutes. Still, the proposal got the Alamo Drafthouse seal of approval and the theater tweeted to remind all the guys out there they need to step up their games. Step your game up, gentlemen. https://t.co/WIxa4OGOxe — Alamo Drafthouse (@alamodrafthouse) February 16, 2018 The theater really set the mood with a special musical performance before Thursday's pre-screening, and an Ethiopian-inspired menu for customers. Boyko Borisov, the Bulgarian prime minister, said he had so far seen nothing in the talks on Britain's exit in March 2019 to give him hope for a good outcome. Ramaphosa elected president of South Africa, vows anti-corruption fight Posted: 15 Feb 2018 08:31 AM PST By Wendell Roelf CAPE TOWN (Reuters) - Cyril Ramaphosa was elected as South Africa's president in a parliamentary vote on Thursday and pledged to tackle endemic corruption after scandal-ridden Jacob Zuma resigned on orders from the ruling African National Congress. Ramaphosa faces an uphill battle in revitalizing growth, creating jobs and stamping out a culture of graft in a nation still polarized by race and inequality more than two decades after the end of white-minority rule. Ramaphosa, in brief remarks to parliament ahead of his first state of the nation address expected on Friday, said he would work hard "not to disappoint the people of South Africa". |

Exposed: Why China Would Lose a War against America Posted: 16 Feb 2018 07:07 AM PST When it comes to a war with the U.S. how well would Beijing be able to use all that stuff? The real question seems pretty simple: yes, China is certainly developing all the military and technology goodies to field a potent force. Sure, Beijing is certainly developing a world-class military, but can its soldiers operate all that equipment competently? |

Qualcomm rejects $121 bn hostile Broadcom bid, again Posted: 16 Feb 2018 06:45 AM PST US mobile chipmaking giant Qualcomm on Friday rejected for a second time a hostile $121 billion takeover bid from Singapore's Broadcom, but said it was open to "further discussions" on a tie-up. Two days after a meeting of top executives of the two computer chipmakers, Qualcomm chairman Paul Jacobs said the recently revised bid remained unacceptable. "Our board is open to further discussions with Broadcom to see if a proposal that appropriately reflects the true value of Qualcomm shares, and ensures an appropriate level of deal certainty, can be obtained," Jacobs said in an open letter to Broadcom chief executive Hock Tan. |
