One killed in Paris knife attack by man shouting 'Allah Akbar' Posted: 12 May 2018 03:37 PM PDT By Julie Carriat and Emmanuel Jarry PARIS (Reuters) - An assailant shouting "Allah Akbar" killed a passer-by in a knife attack that also wounded four others in the heart of Paris late on Saturday before he was shot dead by police, French authorities said. French prosecutor Francois Molins told reporters the police's anti-terrorism unit would launch an investigation, given the aggressor's "mode of operation." French President Emmanuel Macron praised officers for "neutralizing the terrorist." France "will not yield an inch to the enemies of freedom," Macron said on Twitter. The country has been on high alert amid a series of attacks, commissioned or inspired by the Islamic State militant group, over the past three years that has killed dozens of people. |
Malaysia's scandal-mired Najib hit with travel ban after poll loss Posted: 12 May 2018 07:06 AM PDT Malaysia's former leader Najib Razak was hit with a travel ban Saturday as speculation mounted he was about to flee the country following his shock election loss, in a possible bid to avoid prosecution over a multi-billion-dollar scandal. An angry crowd had gathered at a Kuala Lumpur airport, shouting at vehicles and seeking to stop them entering, after a purported flight itinerary leaked online showed Najib and his unpopular wife were planning to head to Indonesia. The Barisan Nasional (BN) coalition's defeat in the election at the hands of an alliance led by Najib's one-time mentor Mahathir Mohamad amounted to a political earthquake, which toppled an increasingly authoritarian regime that had ruled the country for six decades. |

Iran urges Muslims to develop sciences to shake off U.S. hegemony Posted: 12 May 2018 03:17 AM PDT Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei on Saturday called for unity among Muslims and efforts toward scientific advancement, saying this would make it impossible for "enemies" such as the United States to dominate Islamic countries. Shi'ite Iran faces off with Western-allied Sunni Saudi Arabia for influence in the Middle East. "Today, every movement that leads to mutual understanding of Islamic groups and sects is a good thing, and this gathering is an example of the movement for the unification of the Islamic nation," said Khamenei in remarks carried by his official website. |

Mr Henderson-Spruce reportedly worked briefly for UPS as a package handler in 2012. |

Buhari has not disclosed the exact nature of his condition, saying only that he had "never been so ill" and disclosing that it involved blood transfusions and a battery of tests. |
India and Nepal PMs launch construction of 900 MW power plant Posted: 11 May 2018 10:11 AM PDT By Gopal Sharma KATHMANDU (Reuters) - Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday visited Nepal to launch building work with his counterpart K.P.Sharma Oli on the country's biggest hydroelectric project, as New Delhi seeks to rebuild trust in the Himalayan republic, where China has made deep inroads. At a ceremony in Kathmandu, Modi and Oli pushed a button that opened the curtain on a plaque at the site of the 900 MW hydro-power project, formally marking the start of construction work there. The project, which is expected to cost $1.04 billion and is being built by state-run Indian firm Satluj Jal Vidyut Nigam (SJVN) Limited, will be the single biggest foreign investment project in cash-strapped Nepal. |
Iran turns to diplomacy amid high regional tensions Posted: 11 May 2018 02:53 PM PDT Iran's foreign minister will embark on a diplomatic tour to try to salvage the nuclear deal amid high tensions following the US withdrawal and global fears over reports of unprecedented clashes with Israel in Syria. Mohammad Javad Zarif will leave late Saturday for visits to Beijing, Moscow and Brussels, a spokesman said Friday, holding meetings with all five of the remaining parties to the 2015 nuclear deal. Iran appeared determined not to be drawn into a wider regional conflict with Israel during the sensitive negotiations. |

China's Didi apologises after killing of passenger sparks safety fears Posted: 10 May 2018 05:52 PM PDT BEIJING/SHANGHAI (Reuters) - China's biggest ride-sharing company apologised on Thursday over the killing of a passenger, apparently by her driver, and said it had to win back the trust of users after a "tragedy" that has sparked a widespread debate on Chinese social media. The young woman passenger was killed in Zhengzhou city last week, turning a spotlight on passenger safety as ride-sharing giant Didi Chuxing, which is valued at $50 billion, looks to make a big push outside China's borders. Didi was "deeply saddened by and sorry about the tragedy", the company said in a statement, adding that it had apologised to the family of the 21-year-old flight attendant killed en route from the city's airport hotel to downtown. |
UN nuclear watchdog's inspections chief quits after US withdrawal from Iran deal Posted: 11 May 2018 12:03 PM PDT The chief of inspections at the UN nuclear watchdog has resigned suddenly, the agency said on Friday without giving a reason. The departure of Tero Varjoranta comes at a sensitive time, three days after the United States announced it was quitting world powers' nuclear accord with Iran, raising questions as to whether Tehran will continue to comply with it. Varjoranta, a Finn, had been a deputy director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency and head of its Department of Safeguards, which verifies countries' compliance with the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, since October 2013. He will be replaced in an acting capacity by the head of the department's Iran team, the Vienna-based IAEA said. "Mr Tero Varjoranta has resigned effective 11 May 2018," an IAEA spokesman said. "The director general has appointed Mr Massimo Aparo, acting director, Office for Verification in Iran, as acting deputy director general and head of the Department of Safeguards, effective immediately." The accord signed by Iran and major powers in 2015 imposed strict limits on Iran's atomic activities to help ensure they are not put to developing nuclear bombs in exchange for the lifting of international sanctions against Tehran. The IAEA is policing those restrictions and said on Wednesday, the day after Donald Trump announced the US withdrawal from the Iran nuclear deal, that Iran was still implementing its commitments under the deal. The UN watchdog has also repeatedly defended the landmark agreement, saying it is a gain for nuclear verification. Mr Trump warns Iran not to re-start nuke program "The agency's safeguards activities will continue to be carried out in a highly professional manner," the spokesman said. Asked why Varjoranta had resigned, he said: "The agency cannot comment on personnel matters, which are confidential." IAEA Director General Yukiya Amano plans to appoint a permanent replacement as soon as possible, he added. |

Jeffrey Don Edwards 17-year-old daughter told investigators he "got mad at her" earlier this week, for not having cleaned the house or done the washing up, and "began throwing dishes", according to court records filed by Oklahoma County sheriff's office. The girl phoned Ms DePee, who picked up her daughter from Mr Edwards' house. |
Calls for restraint after Israeli raids on 'Iranians' in Syria Posted: 10 May 2018 08:22 PM PDT Unprecedented clashes between Israel and Iran over Syria have sparked calls for restraint from world leaders worried about the risk of all-out war, even as both sides say they want to avoid a regional conflict. All eyes will be on any fresh military activity Friday after Israel carried out widespread deadly raids against what it said were Iranian targets in Syria on Thursday in response to rocket fire towards its forces that it blamed on Iran. The reported exchange of fire came after weeks of rising tensions and followed US President Donald Trump's decision Tuesday to withdraw from the landmark 2015 Iran nuclear deal, a move Israel had long sought. |

Exclusive: Sanctioned Russian tycoon hands back his private jets Posted: 11 May 2018 01:31 AM PDT By Rinat Sagdiev and Polina Ivanova MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russian tycoon Oleg Deripaska has handed back three private jets he was leasing because U.S. sanctions imposed on him last month make it impossible to keep using the planes, the firm retained by the owners to sell the aircraft said on Thursday. The aircraft are Gulfstream executive jets, favored by jet-setting business people for their long range and plush interiors. The return of the aircraft is an indication of how deeply the sanctions have affected Deripaska's business empire, extending beyond the direct impact on his Rusal aluminum firm, whose sales and supply chains have been heavily disrupted. |
