50 dead as Indian bus plunges into valley Posted: 10 Sep 2018 05:41 PM PDT Fifty people died when a bus carrying Hindu pilgrims plunged into a valley in southern India on Tuesday, one of the deadliest accidents on the country's notorious roads in recent years. Road crashes in India claim the lives of more than 150,000 people each year. Most accidents are blamed on poor roads, badly maintained vehicles and reckless driving. |

Uganda's Museveni blames 'external forces' for opposition unrest Posted: 10 Sep 2018 04:31 AM PDT Uganda's President Yoweri Museveni has accused "external forces" of trying to foment trouble by funding his political opponents in a bid to undermine the country's image abroad. In an hours-long televised speech late on Sunday, the 74-year-old railed against the opposition and accused "external forces" of seeking to "sabotage" Uganda's growth. Museveni, who took power in 1986, claimed "foreign money" was being funnelled to his political opponents by unnamed NGOs to foment trouble by paying youngsters to burn tyres and throw rocks at police. |
U.N. chief pushes for protection of civilians in Syria's Idlib Posted: 11 Sep 2018 03:09 PM PDT The U.N. has described it as a "dumping ground" for people evacuated and displaced from elsewhere in Syria during the seven-year war. Assad has vowed to retake the region, backed by his Russian and Iranian allies. Syrian government and Russian warplanes began air strikes in Idlib last week in a possible prelude to a full-scale offensive. |
Trump's tweet doesn't convince Ford to build small crossover SUV in US Posted: 10 Sep 2018 05:06 AM PDT A tweet from the Oval Office on Sunday wasn't enough to convince Ford Motor Company to build a new compact crossover SUV version of its Focus in the U.S. President Donald Trump responded to Ford's announcement last month that the administration's tariffs on goods including cars imported from China prompted it to cancel plans to import the 2020 Focus Active. "Ford has abruptly killed a plan to sell a Chinese-made small vehicle in the U.S. because of the prospect of higher U.S. Tariffs." CNBC. This is just the beginning. This car can now be BUILT IN THE U.S.A. and Ford will pay no tariffs! — Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) September 9, 2018 A Ford spokesman responded on Twitter. "It would not be profitable to build the Focus Active in the U.S. given an expected annual sales volume of fewer than 50,000 units and its competitive segment," Ford spokesman Mike Levine said. The Focus Active, Ford's answer to the popular Subaru Crosstrek, will still be assembled in China for other global markets. The automaker said earlier this year that as part of its $11 billion restructuring, it will stop selling its Ford Fusion, Taurus, Fiesta, and Focus in the U.S. and cancel all of its sedans and hatchbacks over the next couple of years to sell more profitable crossovers, SUVs, and pickup trucks. Assembly of the Focus in the U.S. ended in May and the automaker plans to cut off Fiesta and Taurus production during the 2019 model year. Its Fusion mid-size sedan will continue for about another year and the nameplate may morph into a crossover SUV |

Leslie Moonves resigns as CBS CEO over sexual misconduct claims Posted: 09 Sep 2018 05:56 PM PDT US television giant CBS announced Sunday the immediate departure of CEO Leslie Moonves, one of the biggest scalps in the #MeToo era, following a slew of escalating sexual misconduct allegations. Mr Moonves, who orchestrated CBS's revival into a ratings winner, had been one of the most respected executives in Hollywood until he was accused in late July of inappropriate behavior stretching back decades. Two articles published by The New Yorker magazine - on the same day that his departure was announced and on July 27 - detailed allegations from 12 different women against the 68-year-old television titan. Just hours later, CBS announced that Moonves would depart as chairman, president and CEO "effective immediately," and that he and the network would donate $20 million to supporting the #MeToo movement and equality for women in the workplace. His interim replacement will be chief operating officer Joseph Ianniello while the board searches for a permanent successor. "The donation, which will be made immediately, has been deducted from any severance benefits that may be due Moonves," CBS said. Leslie Moonves Credit: Lucy Nicholson/Reuters An investigation being conducted by outside law firms into the allegations against Moonves is ongoing, the network said. "Moonves will not receive any severance benefits at this time (other than certain fully accrued and vested compensation and benefits); any payments to be made in the future will depend upon the results of the independent investigation and subsequent board evaluation," it added. Moonves's departure had been on the cards, with US media reporting in recent days that the terms of his departure had been under negotiation for weeks, and a deal had been expected before markets open Monday. Reports had said his severance payment could range from $100 million in stock to $180 million stipulated in his contract, or even that he could leave with no bonus, pending the results of the investigation. Journalist Ronan Farrow Credit: ANGELA WEISS/AFP One of his accusers, Jessica Pallingston, told the Pulitzer-winning journalist Ronan Farrow, who broke the allegations against Moonves in The New Yorker, that such a payoff would be "completely disgusting." Farrow's follow-up article on Sunday contained allegations from six more women, who said they Moonves harassed or assaulted them between 1980 and the early 2000s. Farrow, whose reporting about Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein helped spark the #MeToo movement, quotes them as saying that Moonves forced them, at times violently, to perform oral sex on him, or that he exposed himself to them. The company also announced that it had ended a lawsuit pitting network heads against the Redstone family, whose members control an 80 percent voting stake in CBS. The Redstones, who had wanted to merge CBS with the Viacom group - which they also control - sued CBS, saying the network had attempted to dilute their voting rights to a 20 percent share. Moonves joined CBS in 1995 from Warner Bros. Television, where his team developed hit shows such as "Friends" and "ER." He was promoted to president and CEO of CBS Television in 1998, and became chairman in 2003. A one-time actor, his wife is the host of "Big Brother" on CBS. |

ICC 'undeterred' after US sanctions threat Posted: 11 Sep 2018 10:38 AM PDT The International Criminal Court on Tuesday said its work would continue "undeterred" after Washington threatened to prosecute its judges if Americans are charged with war crimes committed in Afghanistan. France and Germany also weighed in to support the Hague-based court after White House National Security Advisor John Bolton said the ICC was "already dead to us". "The ICC, as a court of law, will continue to do its work undeterred, in accordance with those principles and the overarching idea of the rule of law," the tribunal said in a statement. |

Goldman banker had raised ethics concerns: NYT Posted: 11 Sep 2018 06:51 AM PDT (Reuters) - A former Goldman Sachs Group Inc partner had raised concerns about some unethical practices at the bank before he left in 2015, the New York Times reported on Tuesday, citing people close to the matter. James Katzman, who led the bank's West Coast mergers-and-acquisitions practice, had used the whistle-blower hotline in 2014 to report on the investment bank trying to hire a customer's child and colleagues' repeated attempts to obtain and then share confidential client information, the paper reported https://nyti.ms/2CJ9wEq. The investigation was taken up by the bank's general counsel and Katzman was urged to move past his complaints by several senior investment banking executives, the newspaper reported, citing several people familiar with the interactions. |

Brussels will not turn Hungary into 'country of migrants', rages Viktor Orban Posted: 11 Sep 2018 08:14 AM PDT Viktor Orban warned he would never allow Brussels to transform Hungary into "a country of migrants" on Tuesday, ahead of an unprecedented vote tomorrow in the European Parliament that could strip Budapest of its EU voting rights. MEPs will vote on whether to trigger "Article 7", an EU law drafted to ensure respect for democracy and the rule of law, amid fears that Mr Orban is turning Hungary into a dictatorship. "You believe you know better than the Hungarians themselves," Mr Orban told MEPs, after arriving late at Tuesday's debate. "Hungary will be condemned because Hungarians have decided their country is not going to be a country of migrants." Hungary will become the first country to face the procedure because of a European Parliament vote, if it is passed by the required two-thirds majority. Poland is also undergoing the Article 7 process, but in its case this was triggered by the European Commission rather than a parliament vote. National governments must back any action and Budapest has already vowed to veto any punishment levied on Warsaw. Mr Orban is at loggerheads with Brussels over mandatory migrant relocation quotas, as well as laws in Hungary cracking down on NGOs, the media and the Central European University. In an incendiary speech that exposed deep EU divisions, he claimed the "verdict was already written" by a "pro-migration majority", despite his Fidesz party being a member of the European Peoples Party (EPP), the largest parliament group. "We will protect our borders and we will decide who to live together with. We have built a fence and we have stopped illegal migrants. Hundreds of thousands of them. We have defended Hungary and we have defended Europe," he said. "This is the first case in the history of Europe when a community has condemned its own border guard," he added. Perceived share of immigrants in national population "Thank God there is at least one European leader prepared to stand up for his principles, his culture, his nation and his people in the face of such extreme bullying," said Nigel Farage, the MEP and former Ukip leader. "Come and join the Brexit club. You'll love it," he said, after telling Mr Orban he was at a "show trial". Merkel's migration tensions | Read more There is speculation that EPP support for Mr Orban is splintering but British Conservative MEPs will vote against Article 7 because it "infringes the sovereignty of a member state". "Will you ensure that the values of this Union are more than just words written on a piece of paper?" asked Judith Sargentini, the Dutch Green MEP who wrote the parliament report that will be voted on. Mr Orban echoed Greek prime minister Alexis Tsipras and Guy Verhofstadt, the federalist MEP, in predicting that next May's European Parliament elections would be a battle between pro-EU and anti-migrant, nationalistic parties. |

North Korea's Kim asks Trump for another meeting in 'very warm' letter Posted: 10 Sep 2018 08:55 PM PDT The two countries have been discussing North Korea's nuclear programs since their leaders met in Singapore in June, although that summit's outcome was criticized for being short on concrete details about how and whether Kim is willing to give up weapons that threaten the United States. The likely timing of a second Trump-Kim meeting was unclear. South Korea's President Moon Jae-in is scheduled to have his third summit with Kim next week in Pyongyang, and his government had pushed for a three-way summit involving Trump, with the aim of agreeing a joint declaration to end the 1950-53 Korean War. |

Posted: 11 Sep 2018 11:05 AM PDT An Australian cartoonist has defended a sketch of Serena Williams described as racist and sexist saying "I don't know how you draw an African-American person by not making them look like an African-American person" Mark Knight faced a fierce online backlash over the cartoon, published in Melbourne's Herald Sun on Monday, showing a butch and fat-lipped Williams throwing a temper tantrum at the US Open. Critics said the sketch drew on historical racist caricatures of African Americans, but in an interview with CBS News on Tuesday Mr Knight said: "When I drew that cartoon, I wasn't thinking of racial politics in America. I simply saw the world number one player having a dummy spit." He added: "I'm not going to say I'm not going to draw that because it's a no-go area". The Herald Sun's editor, Damon Johnston, leaped to his cartoonist defence saying the sketch "rightly mocks poor behaviour by a tennis legend". British author JK Rowling added her voice to the chorus, tweeting: "Well done on reducing one of the greatest sportswomen alive to racist and sexist tropes and turning a second great sportswoman into a faceless prop." The editor of an Australian newspaper has defended publishing a cartoon of Serena Williams after a fierce online backlash condemned the image as racist and sexist. Well done on reducing one of the greatest sportswomen alive to racist and sexist tropes and turning a second great sportswoman into a faceless prop. https://t.co/YOxVMuTXEC— J.K. Rowling (@jk_rowling) September 10, 2018 The cartoon, published in Melbourne's Herald Sun on Monday, showed a butch and fat-lipped Williams throwing a temper tantrum at the US Open which critics said deployed racist stereotypes. Damon Johnston, the paper's editor, defended cartoonist Mark Knight saying the sketch "rightly mocks poor behaviour by a tennis legend", adding "Mark has the full support of everyone". Mr Knight has denied the cartoon is racist or sexist but closed down his social media yesterday/TUES after facing withering criticism from more than 20,000 online commentators. British author JK Rowling added her voice to the chorus, tweeting: "Well done on reducing one of the greatest sportswomen alive to racist and sexist tropes and turning a second great sportswoman into a faceless prop." Williams sparked controversy over her conduct in Saturday's final against Haitian-Japanese player Naomi Osaka when she smashed her racquet and called the umpire a "thief" and a "liar". Williams was given three code violations, earning her a point penalty and then a game penalty which gave Osaka a 5-3 second-set lead that effectively gifted her the title. The penalties stirred a debate in the tennis world over double standards toward men and women in the sport. In Mr Knight's cartoon, Williams can be seen jumping up and down with a broken racquet next to a baby's dummy as the umpire asks Osaka "can't you just let her win?". Mr Knight, who has a reputation for controversial cartoons, was pilloried from far and wide for his portrayal - including by a number of US media outlets. In a searing piece, The Washington Post's cartoonist Michael Cavna said the "racist" sketch was reminiscent of the "vile imagery" popularised during the era of racial segregation in the US. "Knight draws facial features reflecting the dehumanizing Jim Crow caricatures so common in the 19th and 20th centuries," Mr Cavna wrote. Others pointed out that Osaka, who is mixed race, was portrayed as a petite and feminine white woman with jet blonde straight hair. In fact, Osaka has dark curly hair and is taller than Williams. America's National Association of Black Journalists called the cartoon "repugnant on many levels". "[It] not only exudes racist, sexist caricatures of both women, but Williams' depiction is unnecessarily sambo-like," the organisation said in a statement. The Story of Little Black Sambo was a 19th Century children's book which featured derogatory racial depictions such as characters with thick red lips. The cartoonist initially responded to the criticism by stating he had "no knowledge of those cartoons or that period", saying on Tuesday that "the world has just gone crazy". Serena Williams' US Open 2018 final umpire row He pointed out that he had drawn an unflattering portrayal of Australian male tennis star Nick Kyrgios "behaving badly". "Don't bring gender into it when it's all about behaviour," he said, but by noon on Tuesday he had closed down both his Facebook and Twitter accounts. Mr Knight was also accused of racism last month for a cartoon on train station safety which showed faceless black figures fighting in a Melbourne subway. The publishers of the Melbourne's Herald Sun, Australia's most-read newspaper, also defended the cartoonist saying "the world has gone too PC". |
Nike boycott: Parks and recreation department banned from using brand over Kaepernick advert Posted: 10 Sep 2018 05:28 AM PDT A US city has banned its parks and recreation department from purchasing Nike equipment after the sportswear giant launched a new ad campaign featuring controversial quarterback Colin Kaepernick. Local government staff in Kenner, Louisiana, were told of new rules last week, introduced in an apparent response to the brand's use of the former NFL star in commercials. In a memo sent to the Kenner's parks and recreation director, mayor Ben Zahn demanded none of the city's $125,000 (£97,000) leisure supplies budget be spent on Nike products. |
