The bar fights back at Kavanaugh Posted: 02 Oct 2018 02:02 PM PDT When President Trump named Brett Kavanaugh as his nominee to the Supreme Court in late July, the legal community rallied around the D.C. circuit court judge. Here's Why Democrats Should Support Judge Kavanaugh," read the headline of one Politico op-ed. "There are a lot of good reasons for liberals to oppose Kavanaugh," wrote Benjamin Wittes, editor in chief of the legal blog LawFare. |

IAEA fends off Israel pressure over Iran Posted: 02 Oct 2018 11:52 AM PDT The UN's nuclear watchdog Tuesday refused to "take at face value" Israel's claims that Iran is harbouring a secret atomic warehouse, fending off pressure to inspect the allegedly suspect site. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu made the claim in front of the UN General Assembly last week. Without explicitly referring to Netanyahu's claim, IAEA chief Yukiya Amano insisted that the agency's independence was "of paramount importance" for its work. |

Volkswagen not prepared to cover full costs of diesel retrofits: source Posted: 02 Oct 2018 04:35 AM PDT Volkswagen is not prepared to cover the full cost of hardware retrofits for older diesel vehicles in Germany, a source at Volkswagen said, contradicting a deal announced by the German coalition parties on Tuesday. Under the coalition parties' deal, owners of older diesel cars in German cities where the air is particularly polluted will be able to choose between trade-in incentives and a hardware upgrade. |

Body found inside plane days after it ditched into Pacific lagoon Posted: 01 Oct 2018 06:21 PM PDT A male passenger's body has been found inside an airliner that ditched and sank in a lagoon last week after missing the runway on a remote Pacific island, officials said. The Air Niugini Boeing 737-800 was attempting to land at Weno airport in Micronesia on Friday morning but fell short of the runway and splashed down in Chuuk lagoon. "It is with great sadness I confirm that the body of a male passenger was discovered by divers today as they conducted a further search of P2-PXE and the surrounding area in Chuuk lagoon," Air Niugini chief executive Tahawar Durrani said in a statement late Monday. |
Posted: 02 Oct 2018 03:30 AM PDT An elaborate stunt planned by a US Border Patrol agent to reveal the sex of his future child sparked a massive wildfire that spread over 47,000 acres of land and caused $8.2m (£6.3m) damage. Dennis Dickey, 37, shot a rifle at a target containing Tannerite, a highly explosive powder, at a "gender-reveal party" near Green Valley in Arizona. The "high-velocity" bullet was intended to cause an explosion of either blue or pink powder, but it also sparked flames which spread rapidly to the Coronado National Forest. |
Graham on Kavanaugh confirmation process: ‘Enough. Vote. Don’t destroy this man’s life’ Posted: 03 Oct 2018 10:16 AM PDT Sen. Lindsey Graham is suspicious of the numerous allegations coming out against Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh. Graham lists the allegations and says, "Don't destroy this man's life." Graham also says that if a seat on the Supreme Court should become open in a presidential election year, he would want to wait until the next election to confirm a nominee. |

Russia completes delivery of S-300 system to Syria Posted: 02 Oct 2018 02:47 PM PDT Russia has delivered an S-300 surface-to-air missile system to Syria, it said on Tuesday, in defiance of Israeli and U.S. concerns that the arms sale would embolden Iran and escalate the Syrian war. Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu told President Vladimir Putin during a meeting broadcast by Rossiya 24 TV: "The work was finished a day ago," adding that the system would improve the security of Russian military personal in Syria. Russia decided to supply the system after Moscow accused Israel of indirectly causing the downing of a Russian military jet near Syria in September. |

Top UN court sides with Iran and rules US must roll back some sanctions Posted: 03 Oct 2018 04:51 AM PDT The UN's highest court handed Iran a legal victory over the US on Wednesday when it ordered the White House to roll back some of Donald Trump's sanctions on Tehran. Judges at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) ruled unanimously that parts of the sanctions the US imposed on Iran in May were illegal and must be removed. The Iranian government hailed the ruling as proof that "Iran is in the right" but the US said it was not bound by the court's decision and would not ease sanctions. Mike Pompeo, the US secretary of state, said he was "disappointed that the court failed to recognise that it has no jurisdiction to issue any order relating to these sanctions measures." The court ruled that the US must roll back sanctions that would hamper Iran's ability to important medicine, food, and spare parts necessary for civilian airline safety. In a 29-page ruling, the judges said that US sanctions could stop Iran importing humanitarian items and have "a serious detrimental impact on the health and lives of individuals on the territory of Iran". It also ruled that a US ban on spare airline parts had the "potential to endanger civil aviation safety in Iran and the lives of its users". Mr Trump ordered a first round of punishing sanctions on Iran in May after he pulled the US out of the 2015 nuclear agreement earlier this year. Iran petitioned the court in July, arguing that Mr Trump's decision violated a 1955 treaty signed between the countries before they became arch-foes following the Iranian revolution in 1979. Mr Pompeo announced Wednesday he was terminating the treaty in response to the ruling. "This is a decision, frankly, that is 39 years overdue," he said. "The decision proved once again that the Islamic Republic is right and the US sanctions against people and citizens of our country are illegal and cruel," the Iranian foreign ministry said in a statement. "The United States must comply with its international commitments and lift obstacles to Iranian trade," it added. Javad Zarif, the Iranian foreign minister, called the decision "another failure for the sanctions-addicted US government and victory for rule of law". There was no immediate response by the US. During a hearing in August, the US argued that the ICJ did not have the authority to rule on the case because it was related to American national security. The US sanctions have already badly weakened Iran's economy and sent the riyal spiraling to new lows against the dollar. Iran has demanded that European countries find a way to offset the economic damage caused by US sanctions. Tehran has threatened to withdraw from the 2015 nuclear agreement if American sanctions choke off its economy. Hassan Rouhani, Iran's president, said Wednesday Europe had taken "a big step" towards maintaining business relations with Iran by setting up a special channel designed to allow European firms to trade with Iran while avoiding US sanctions. Analysts have been sceptical that the Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) arrangement would give European firms the confidence to continue doing business with Iran but Mr Rouhani praised the measure. |

AP Explains: Removal of mines from Korean Demilitarized Zone Posted: 01 Oct 2018 05:49 PM PDT SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — Seoul says the rival Koreas began removing mines and other explosives at two sites inside their heavily armed border on Monday as part of their recent tension-reduction steps. They will likely end up pulling out a very small portion of an estimated 2 million mines littered inside and near the 248-kilometer (155-mile) -long, 4-kilometer (2.5-mile) -wide Demilitarized Zone. But it would be the two countries' first joint demining work in more than a decade and comes amid international diplomacy aimed at ridding North Korea of its nuclear weapons. |
