Iran seeks to leverage diplomatic goodwill Posted: 01 Nov 2018 06:36 PM PDT As it braces for the return of a US-enforced oil embargo on Monday, Iran can take comfort in how much stronger its diplomatic position looks compared to the past. During the last sanctions period between 2010 and 2015, most of the world lined up behind Washington to help enforce embargoes aimed at curbing Iran's nuclear programme. The US had a widely respected president in Barack Obama, while Iran had the rabble-rousing Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who riled Western audiences with stunts such as Holocaust-denial conferences and was tainted by a vicious crackdown on protests in 2009. |
Gwyneth Paltrow aims to 'rebrand' menopause Posted: 02 Nov 2018 01:50 PM PDT Gwyneth Paltrow has been praised for speaking out about how her body is changing as part of an effort to "rebrand" the social stigma around menopause. Experts said the Oscar-winning actress's decision to talk candidly about entering the perimenopause would help other women. The perimenopause is a transition stage before the menopause that can last several years. "I think when you get into perimenopause, you notice a lot of changes," Paltrow, 46, said. "I can feel the hormonal shifts happening - the sweating, the moods. "You're just like all of a sudden furious for no reason." Paltrow wants to "rebrand" the menopause It is usual for the perimenopause, when ovaries start producing less oestrogen, to begin for women in their 40s, and sometimes in their 30s. The stage usually lasts about four years. It can be as little as a few months, or as long as 10 years. Paltrow said it had made her determined to "rebrand" the menopause itself. She said: "I think menopause gets a really bad rap and needs a bit of a rebranding. I don't think we have in our society a great example of an aspirational menopausal woman." Paltrow said changes she had made included tweaking her fitness routine recently to include more weight-lifting, for building bone density. Symptoms of the perimenopause can include fatigue, hot flushes, night sweats, palpitations, headaches, memory problems, low mood and joint pains. Dr Louise Newson, who runs a menopause and wellness clinic in Stratford-upon-Avon, said it was "really good" that the actress had publicised the fact she was in the perimenopause. "Good for her," she said. "Every day I hear stories about women suffering, relationships breaking up, because of the impact of symptoms. "When you know you're in your perimenopause it's a good time to start managing those symptoms. It's a really good time to take stock about your future health. Anything that reduces the risk of heart disease and osteoporosis is good." She said a lot of women have anti-depressants prescribed because doctors don't realise their symptoms are to do with the perimenopause. "It's important for men to know what's going on too," she added. As part of her bid to "rebrand" the menopause Paltrow has also launched a line of vitamin supplements called Madame Ovary, aimed at combating symptoms. "There aren't a lot of products being made for us to really help us through that phase," she said. "I feel like I have fewer days now when I feel cranky or emotional for no apparent reason." In August, Dr Andrea Davies of the University of Leicester, suggested male academics should say the word "menopause" at least three times daily in a show of solidarity with their female colleagues. |

Kavanaugh Accuser Admits She Fabricated Allegations as a ‘Ploy’ for ‘Attention’ Posted: 03 Nov 2018 11:44 AM PDT Senate Judiciary Chairman Chuck Grassley has referred Judy Munro-Leighton to the Justice Departement and FBI for investigation into potentially materially false statements and obstruction. "The Committee is grateful to citizens who come forward with relevant information in good faith, even if they are not one hundred percent sure about what they know," Grassley wrote in his letter to FBI Director Christopher Wray and Attorney General Jeff Sessions. |

Posted: 03 Nov 2018 07:35 AM PDT As the nation prepares for the midterm elections, there is something of a sense of anxiety, following the mail bombing of pipe bombs, the shooting dead of two African Americans in a grocery store and the killing of 11 Jews at a synagogue in Pittsburgh. Critics of Donald Trump have accused the president of intentionally stoking division ahead of the election, with claims that a caravan of Central American migrants is a national security threat to the country. Asked about this on Friday as he left the White House, Mr Trump pointed at the reporter who asked the question and said: "You're creating violence by your question. |

Iran's Khamenei says the world opposes Trump's decisions: TV Posted: 03 Nov 2018 06:43 AM PDT Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei also said Iran's arch-adversary the United States had failed to reassert its domination over Iran since the country's 1979 Islamic Revolution that toppled the U.S.-backed Shah. "The world opposes every decision made by Trump," Iranian state television quoted Khamenei, a Shi'ite cleric with ultimate authority in Iran, as saying during a meeting with thousands of students. America has been defeated by the Islamic Republic over the past 40 years." Washington will on Monday reintroduce far-reaching sanctions on Iran's vital oil sales and banking sectors to try to force the Islamic Republic into negotiations to scrap its nuclear energy and ballistic missile programs and end its support for proxies in conflicts across the Middle East. |

The gambit fell apart after Musk failed to line up funding, prompting an investigation by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. |
Midterm election glossary: The terms you need to know to understand American politics Posted: 02 Nov 2018 01:07 PM PDT With the 2018 midterm elections just a week away, the casual reader may be coming across some strange terms in the American political lexicon. For anyone confused by reports on the battle between Democrats and Republicans to control Congress, The Independent has compiled a handy list of some common terms. SEE ALSO: Google's new Doodle is a terrifyingly addictive Halloween game you can play with friends Day of the Dead is a holiday observed in cities and towns throughout Mexico, which dates back thousands of years. "Playful calacas and calaveras (skeletons and skulls), are usually seen in festive attire, enjoying (after)life to the fullest." "Colourful ofrendas or altars are set up in many homes, surrounded by favourite food and drink, as well as photographs and cherished mementos, plus sweet Pan de Muertos and sugar skulls," the blog continues. The gathering at sundown Friday -- much larger than on a typical Friday -- took place in the Rodef Shalom synagogue in the nearby Shadyside neighborhood, a temporary home to the Tree of Life congregation, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. Tree of Life rabbi Jeffrey Myers, a survivor of the shooting, on Saturday described the agony of the past week, but also the determination of his congregation -- and of Pittsburgh -- to remain strong. |

Trump administration to restore all US sanctions on Iran removed under nuclear deal Posted: 02 Nov 2018 08:05 AM PDT The Trump administration has announced it is re-instating all US sanctions on Iran suspended under the 2015 nuclear deal. Six months after the president announced he was withdrawing the US from the eight-party deal signed by Barack Obama with the intention of limiting Iran's alleged nuclear weapons ambitions, the US government said a second batch of sanctions would come into effect on Monday. Iran's economy has long relied on its exports of crude oil. |

Chief Justice John Roberts on Oct. 19 had temporarily put the case on hold while the court as a whole decided how to proceed. "We deeply regret the reimposition of sanctions by the United States stemming from their withdrawal from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action," the statement said in reference to the hard-fought 2015 nuclear deal with Iran. Struck between world powers and Tehran after years of fraught negotiations, the deal was aimed at limiting Iran's nuclear capabilities in exchange for sanctions relief. |
Past midterms, some zero in on amending Constitution Posted: 03 Nov 2018 01:55 PM PDT NEW YORK (AP) — Whatever success Republicans have amassed in taking control of all three branches of U.S. government, and whatever fate awaits them as midterm elections near, some on the right are working to cement change by amending the Constitution. And to the mounting alarm of others on all parts of the spectrum, they want to bypass the usual process. |
