Nasa chief criticses Elon Musk's weed-smoking podcast appearance Posted: 30 Nov 2018 12:29 PM PST Elon Musk has been warned by Nasa's most senior figure not to repeat his weed-smoking, whisky-drinking antics on a recent podcast if he wants to continue working with the space agency. Jim Bridenstein, the Nasa administrator, suggested that Mr Musk, an entrepreneur who is financing commercial space exploration, had acted inappropriately given his role with the company. Mr Musk's SpaceX is one of two firms contracted to build a shuttle that will fly US astronauts to the International Space Station from American territory – something that was ended in 2011. Recent behavior by Mr Musk, who co-founded the online payment system PayPal and the car company Tesla, has triggered a slew of negative headlines in the media. In September, Mr Musk inhaled a joint made from marijuana and tobacco while on the podcast Josh Rogan Experience which was filmed in California, where the drug is legal. Mr Bridenstein was critical when asked about the incident by reporters during a briefing in Washington DC this week. "I will tell you that was not helpful, and that did not inspire confidence, and the leaders of these organizations need to take that as an example of what to do when you lead an organization that's going to launch American astronauts," Mr Bridenstein said. He added: "We've had a number of conversations. I will tell you, he is as committed to safety as anybody, and he understands that that was not appropriate behavior, and you won't be seeing that again." Nasa has been working with SpaceX and Boeing to develop a new shuttle to fly US astronauts to the ISS from America, something that could happen as early as next year. The contracts are worth hundreds of millions of US dollars. Elon Musk at a press conference following the first launch of a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket in Cape Canaveral Credit: REUTERS/Joe Skipper Mr Bridenstein has ordered a review, known as a cultural assessment, into the working practices of both companies ahead of the first launches. The review launch predated Mr Musk's podcast appearance. Mr Bridenstein said the review was ordered to help ensure that past space tragedies such as the Challenger and Columbia space shuttle disasters would not be repeated. The backlash came after Mr Musk's bizarre appearance on the podcast, hosted by a American comedian and television host Joe Rogan. In the episode, which was streamed live, Mr Rogan was seen smoking a joint. Mr Musk took a sniff of a joint, asked "'I mean, it's legal, right?", and then took a drag. Later in the two-and-a-half hour appearance, Mr Musk said: "I'm getting text messages from friends saying 'what the hell are you doing smoking weed'." He went on to discuss the impact the drug was having on him, saying: "It's more like the opposite of a cup of coffee. It's like a cup of coffee in reverse." At one point Mr Musk became contemplative. "I don't think you'd necessarily want to be me," he said. "I don't think people would like it that much." It is not known exactly what the Nasa chief said to Mr Musk about the incident. SpaceX has been approached for comment. |

Cambridge Analytica collapsed following revelations earlier this year that it had held swathes of Facebook user data after it was obtained from a University of Cambridge researcher without user consent. |
UK PM May says Russia must release Ukrainian vessels and crew Posted: 29 Nov 2018 06:38 PM PST Russia must release the Ukrainian boats and sailors it captured on Sunday, British Prime Minister Theresa May said on Thursday, adding that Britain would continue to push for "appropriate sanctions." Russia opened fire on the three Ukrainian vessels and then seized them and their crew on Sunday near Crimea, which Russia annexed from Ukraine in 2014. "This is part of a pattern of Russian behavior. "We have always been at the forefront in the EU of calling for sanctions on Russia in relation to its behavior," she added. |
G20 summit: Angela Merkel's plane 'makes emergency landing' on way to Argentina Posted: 29 Nov 2018 01:59 PM PST Donald Trump has called off expected bilateral talks with Vladimir Putin at the G20 summit in Buenos Aires amid increasing tensions surrounding the Russia-Ukraine crisis and explosive reports the president's former lawyer lied about a Trump Tower project in Moscow. As world leaders began to arrive in Argentina ahead of the start of the summit on Friday, tensions surround Russia's current stand-off with Ukraine over the Kerch Strait in the Sea of Azov, where the Russian navy captured three of its neighbours vessels over a territorial dispute on Sunday. |
Ukraine bars Russian men from entry as tensions flare Posted: 30 Nov 2018 07:31 AM PST Ukraine on Friday barred Russian men aged 16-60 from entry as tensions mounted between the two countries over Moscow's seizure of three Ukrainian ships last week. The move came after Kiev imposed martial law in border regions this week in response to the Russian seizure of the ships and 24 sailors off Moscow-annexed Crimea. "As of today, entry is restricted for foreigners -- in the first instance for male citizens of the Russian Federation age 16 to 60," the head of the border service Petro Tsyhykal said at a meeting with President Petro Poroshenko that was broadcast live. |

Report says Syria shot down Israeli war plane but Israel denies it Posted: 29 Nov 2018 02:05 PM PST Syria's air defense forces shot down an Israeli war plane and four missiles on Thursday, Russia's RIA news agency said citing a Syrian security source, but Israel's military said the report was bogus. The area where the incident is said to have occurred is where Hezbollah, a group backed by Iran, has its communications and logistics hub for southern Syria near the Israeli border, according to two senior regional intelligence sources. Israel is concerned that Iran's growing presence in Syria poses a threat to its own security and has struck dozens of Iranian and Iran-backed positions in Syria over the course of the country's seven-year conflict. |

California regulator orders PG&E to implement safety recommendations Posted: 29 Nov 2018 01:01 PM PST The move by the California Public Utilities Commission comes as it investigates the cause of the Camp Fire that destroyed the town of Paradise, in the state's deadliest-ever wildfire. The recommendations, which were made following an investigation on the utility after the 2010 San Bruno pipeline explosion, include development of a comprehensive safety strategy, resource requirements and budgets. "Although there are a few bright spots, PG&E appears not to have a clear vision for safety programs and instead pursues many programs without thought to how they fit together, despite eight years passing since the explosion in San Bruno," CPUC President Michael Picker said in a statement. |

Economists, Wall Street split on Fed signals Posted: 30 Nov 2018 05:26 AM PST Economists and investors have been scratching their heads this week over signals from the Federal Reserve, which left the future of US monetary policy open to broadly divergent interpretations. In remarks delivered Wednesday in New York, Fed chairman Jerome Powell uttered words that set Wall Street on fire. Claiming that benchmark lending rates were "just below" a range of estimates for "neutral," that is, neither stimulating nor slowing growth, Powell sent a signal that markets took to mean the Fed might ease off on raising rates in 2019. |
