Roberts, liberal justices snub Trump bid to enforce asylum policy

Roberts, liberal justices snub Trump bid to enforce asylum policyThe justices on a 5-4 vote rebuffed the administration's bid to put on hold a California-based federal judge's order preventing it from carrying out the policy making anyone crossing the U.S.-Mexican border outside of an official port of entry ineligible for asylum. The planned asylum change was a key component of Trump's hardline policies aimed at making it tougher for immigrants to enter and stay in the United States. Roberts, who last month rebuked Trump over his criticism of the judiciary, joined liberal Justices Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Stephen Breyer, Elena Kagan and Sonia Sotomayor against the administration.

Trump's Wall Shutdown Sets Table for a Risky 2020 GambleTrump won the White House in part by depicting the nation as beset by uncontrolled immigration that was the root of a complex set of problems, from lost jobs, to crime, to the opioid epidemic, that drove the economic and cultural grievances of his voters. The border wall -- whether it's a concrete barrier or "artistically designed steel slats," as Trump recently described it -- has become a potent symbol of that for the president and his supporters. "Immigration is the policy issue that most immediately connects to national identity issues.

The Mars InSight robot just placed its first instrument on Mars’ surface

Posted: 21 Dec 2018 06:03 PM PST

The Mars InSight robot just placed its first instrument on Mars' surfaceNASA's Mars InSight mission is moving along at a rapid pace. After landing on the planet just a few weeks ago, InSight has spent its days observing its new living space and sending back photos of the ground surrounding it. NASA's InSight team has been practicing the tricky task of placing the robot's sensitive instruments on the surface. Now, with a couple of years of observation and data gathering ahead of it, the bot has successfully deployed the first of its sensor suite, and NASA is very happy with how well things are progressing. "NASA's InSight lander has deployed its first instrument onto the surface of Mars, completing a major mission milestone," NASA writes in a new blog post. "New images from the lander show the seismometer on the ground, its copper-colored covering faintly illuminated in the Martian dusk. It looks as if all is calm and all is bright for InSight, heading into the end of the year." There were many factors at work in determining the timetable between landing and instrument deployment, and NASA is the first to admit that it got mighty lucky with InSight's landing site. One major concern was that rocks or uneven ground would hamper instrument placement, requiring extensive planning before the sensors could be placed on the planet. However, NASA's chosen landing site ended up being even more perfect than the InSight team could have hoped. The ground was virtually free of anything larger than a pebble and the robot's handlers have plenty of space to work with, allowing things to move on faster than initially planned. "InSight's timetable of activities on Mars has gone better than we hoped," InSight Project Manager Tom Hoffman said in a statement. "Getting the seismometer safely on the ground is an awesome Christmas present."

Uranus is weird and researchers think a giant collision caused it

Posted: 22 Dec 2018 07:35 AM PST

Uranus is weird and researchers think a giant collision caused itUranus has always been a bit of an oddball in our solar system and a new simulation presented by a group of researchers might explain why. Uranus, the seventh planet from the sun, is a peculiar ice giant that is tilted at a 98-degree angle — while every other planet spins on a vertical axis in relation to its orbit, Uranus spins on a horizontal axis. Researchers suggest that this may have been caused by a massive collision. SEE ALSO: Moody photo from Mars shows a giant crater loaded with ice Jacob Kegerreis, a PhD researcher at Durham University, presented the analysis that a huge rock, possibly the size of a small planet, collided with Uranus, causing it to tilt dramatically, affecting its spin, its magnetic field, and even its heat distribution. Kegerreis and his fellow researchers created a high-resolution simulation to show exactly what this would have looked like 3 to 4 billion years ago. The impact would have been catastrophic. Along with affecting the planet's tilt, the impact event may have also spurred on the development of Uranus's thick icy outer layer, which keeps the heat from planet's core locked inside. Uranus is the only planet in our solar system that doesn't leak heat from its core, reaching temperatures of -371 degrees Fahrenheit at some of its chilliest points. The impact likely caused Uranus's larger moons and rings, which orbit in line with its rotation, to gain their unique path as well. There is still quite a bit to learn about Uranus, considering only one probe has taken a close look at the planet, and that was the Voyager 2 in 1986. Christmas wreath bread

Posted: 22 Dec 2018 02:00 AM PST

Christmas wreath breadChristmas wreath bread SERVES about 8 INGREDIENTS For the dough 250ml milk 50g butter, cubed, plus extra for greasing the bowl 2¼ tsp (1 sachet) active dry yeast 450g plain flour, plus extra for dusting 50g light-brown sugar ½ tsp sea salt 1 egg, lightly beaten icing sugar, to serve (optional) For the filling 200g currants 50g mixed candied citrus peel, chopped 1 tsp ground cinnamon 1 tsp mixed spice zest and juice of 1 lemon zest and juice of 1 orange 100g butter, at room temperature 2 tbsp light-brown sugar METHOD First make the dough. In a saucepan, heat the milk until just below boiling, then add the butter and remove from the heat. Allow to cool for five minutes – until just below body temperature – then add the yeast to the now lukewarm milk. Let stand for another 10 minutes. Combine the flour, brown sugar and salt in a large bowl, and make a well in the centre. Pour in the milk mixture. Using a wooden spoon, combine until the dough holds together. Continue kneading with your hands on a lightly floured worktop for another 10 minutes. Shape into a ball, place in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm spot for 90 minutes, or until the dough has doubled in volume. For the filling, heat the currants, peel, cinnamon, mixed spice, and lemon and orange zest and juice in a saucepan. Cook over very low heat, until the currants are nicely plumped up. Let cool. Mix in the butter and brown sugar and set aside. Knead the dough briefly once more. On a lightly floured worktop, roll it out into a rectangle about 45x30cm. Spread the filling over it using a spatula. Allow a margin of about 2cm at the long sides. Roll up the dough from a long side, moisten the bare edge with water, and press to seal the seam. Place the roll with the seam facing down. Moisten the ends of the roll as well and bend them together, forming a circle. Place the wreath on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. With a sharp knife, cut into the roll every 3cm, almost all the way through, but not quite. Pull out each cut piece, exposing the sides; the spirals will form a circular fan of swirls. Cover with a clean dish towel and allow the wreath to rise again for about 45 minutes. Preheat the oven to 200C/180C fan/gas mark 6. Brush the bread with the lightly beaten egg. Bake for about 30 minutes, until golden brown. Dust with icing sugar if you like. Recipe from Home Made Christmas, by Yvette van Boven, published by Abrams (£26.99).
