Pompeo Orders ‘Non-Emergency’ U.S. Employees Out of Venezuela Posted: 24 Jan 2019 05:32 PM PST While Pompeo initially scoffed at a demand by Maduro that all U.S. diplomats depart by Saturday afternoon, the State Department issued an advisory late Thursday that "non-emergency U.S. government employees" should leave. The American Embassy in Caracas will remain in operation with a skeleton staff, but the State Department warned Americans in the country that their government "has limited ability to provide emergency services to U.S. citizens in Venezuela" and that they should "strongly consider departing" the country. |
Nurse arrested after US woman gave birth in vegetative state Posted: 23 Jan 2019 09:29 AM PST A male nurse has been arrested in Arizona for the sexual assault of a woman who gave birth while in a long-term vegetative state, police in the US state said Wednesday. The suspect -- identified as Nathan Sutherland, age 36 -- faces charges of one count of sexual assault and one count of vulnerable adult abuse, Phoenix police Sergeant Tommy Thompson told a news conference. Sutherland is a "licensed practical nurse who was responsible for providing care to the victim during this time the sexual assault occurred," Phoenix Police Chief Jeri Williams said. |

Mr Trump said: "As the Shutdown was going on, Nancy Pelosi asked me to give the State of the Union Address. Rank and file members of United Teachers Los Angeles voted overwhelmingly late on Tuesday to approve a 3-1/2 year contract agreement that the union and school district had reached before dawn that day, union officials said. The Los Angeles Unified School District kept schools open during the strike, staffing them with substitute teachers and support staff to supervise students. |

Venezuela military chief declares loyalty to Maduro and warns US not to intervene Posted: 24 Jan 2019 11:36 AM PST Venezuela's military chief has declared his support for president Nicolas Maduro and warned the US not to intervene – a move that may be crucial if the man sworn in for a second term two weeks ago is to cling on to power. As Britain became the latest nation to recognise opposition politician Juan Guaido as the country's president, military forces loyal to Mr Maduro took to the airwaves to declare their support for him. In a televised speech on Thursday, defence minister Vladimir Padrino Lopez said Mr Maduro was the country's legitimate president and that the opposition was seeking to carry out a coup. |

Democrats Launch Probe of Security Clearances for Kushner, Other Trump Aides Posted: 23 Jan 2019 08:43 AM PST Controversy erupted over the White House's security vetting procedures last year after revelations former Staff Secretary Rob Porter was permitted to keep his security clearance for months even though the FBI said it had provided the White House a report including allegations of domestic violence from his two ex-wives. Kushner and more than 30 other Trump aides lost access to top secret intelligence in February 2018 because they had been working with "interim" clearances and their background investigations had never been completed even though some had been at the White House more than a year. |

Netanyahu pledges 'lethal' response to Gaza violence after blocking aid Posted: 23 Jan 2019 09:33 AM PST Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned Palestinian Islamist group Hamas on Wednesday of a "lethal" reaction to any renewed Palestinian violence on the Gaza border, after blocking aid to the strip in response to the wounding of an Israeli soldier. Weeks of relative calm in the Gaza Strip ended Tuesday when Israeli soldiers came under fire along the border with the enclave in two separate incidents. Israeli tanks in response struck two Hamas positions in Gaza, killing a militant, while overnight Israeli warplanes struck what the army said was a Hamas military camp in northern Gaza. |

Fears over large-scale job losses after Lloyds reveals shift to new IT system Posted: 23 Jan 2019 09:00 AM PST Lloyds Banking Group could be considering job cuts in the UK after tabling plans to switch some of its IT systems to a new startup as part of cost-cutting measures. The bank, which cut over a thousand roles in the last year alone in two different redundancy rounds as part of its three-year strategy to cut costs, is now planning to remove some back office IT functions to fintech startup Thought Machine, according to internal documents seen by the Financial Times. The British high-street bank has entered into negotiations with regulators about transferring the data of 500,000 customers from its Intelligent Finance brand to test a new core banking system built by UK startup Thought Machine, the documents showed. Lloyds declined to comment on the IT systems transfer or potential job losses. BTU, the union that represents Lloyds Banking Group employees, said that 10,000 jobs are at risk. BTU general secretary Mark Brown said: "What they are building is a completely new IT system, and that won't need anywhere near the number of people that are involved in the current IT system. "If it works and doesn't collapse, it is going to completely change retail banking." Lloyds will roll the technology out more widely if it proves effective, the union has claimed. Lloyds announced an £11m strategic partnership with Thought Machine, which was set up by ex-Googler Paul Taylor, in November of last year. At the time, Zak Mian, group director of transformation at Lloyds Banking Group, said: "A key part of our recently launched three-year strategic plan is applying technology innovation to meet our customers' evolving needs. "I'm really excited to work with the Thought Machine team to explore ways to simplify and enhance our IT architecture and helping on our journey to make banking easy and simple for customers." The bank currently holds a 10pc stake in the startup, which first launched in 2016 and builds cloud-based banking solutions. |
Russia takes wraps off new missile to try to save U.S. nuclear pact Posted: 23 Jan 2019 08:22 AM PST Washington has threatened to pull out of the 1987 Intermediate-range Nuclear Forces Treaty (INF), alleging that the new Russian missile, the Novator 9M729 (called SSC-8 by NATO), violates the pact, which bans either side from stationing short and intermediate-range, land-based missiles in Europe. Russia denies that. It says the missile's range puts it outside the treaty and has accused the United States of inventing a false pretext to exit a treaty it wants to leave anyway so as to develop new missiles. |

Apple cuts hundreds of employees from secretive self-driving car project Posted: 24 Jan 2019 03:59 AM PST Apple has cut more than 200 employees from its self-driving car team, known internally as 'Project Titan'. Project Titan has been a significant but closely guarded project at the iPhone creator for nearly five years. At its height, it was said that over 5,000 employees were either working on or aware of the self-driving car projects reportedly lead by Ford and Apple veteran Bob Mansfield since 2014. The latest dismissals come as the company restructures its autonomous technology projects. Apple acknowledged the cuts, initially reported by CNBC, but said that it still sees a 'huge opportunity' in the sector. "We have an incredibly talented team working on autonomous systems and associated technologies at Apple," said an Apple spokesman. "As the team focuses their work on several key areas for 2019, some groups are being moved to projects in other parts of the company, where they will support machine learning and other initiatives, across all of Apple." "We continue to believe there is a huge opportunity with autonomous systems, that Apple has unique capabilities to contribute, and that this is the most ambitious machine learning project ever." Apple has reportedly been testing its 'Project Titan' vehicles in and around its campus in Cupertino, California. Credit: Reuters It is unclear how many of the 200 employees have left Apple altogether or have been moved to other projects within the company. However, it is reported that the restructure was expected following the August 2018 appointment of former Tesla engineering vice president, Doug Field, to lead Project Titan alongside Mansfield. Apple has regularly said that its autonomous vehicle project was a significant focus for the company, with CEO Tim Cook saying it was the 'mother of all AI projects' in 2017. While the actual tech behind Project Titan has remained a close secret, Apple had the third highest permit applications for self-driving vehicles in California behind General Motor's 'Cruise' and Waymo. Apple has been reportedly testing its self-driving vehicles in and around its Cupertino headquarters, with the goal of an automated shuttle service running throughout its campus. In August 2018, it was confirmed by Californian authorities that an Apple test vehicle had been involved in a minor crash near its base after it was rear-ended by a human Nissan driver. Reports also have it that Apple has restructured Project Titan once before in 2016, scaling back the company's ambitions to build their own vehicle in order to focus on software and AI. Where this latest change leaves Project Titan remains to be seen while Apple continue to deal with the fallout from its shock profit warning earlier this month, cutting sales forecasts for the first time since 2002. |
China detains Australian on suspicion of endangering security Posted: 24 Jan 2019 02:46 AM PST Australian officials said Yang Hengjun was detained shortly after he flew in to the southern city of Guangzhou from New York last week, but it did not believe his detention was the result of rising tension between China and the West. Chinese foreign ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said that Australia was officially notified after Yang was placed under "coercive measures" - a euphemism for detention - in Beijing. "The Australian citizen Yang Jun, due to being suspected of engaging in criminal acts that endangered China's national security, was recently placed under coercive measures and is being investigated by the Beijing city State Security Bureau," Hua told reporters. |
