Trump says US backs Venezuela's 'quest for freedom': speech excerpts Posted: 05 Feb 2019 06:12 PM PST President Donald Trump plans to ramp up the pressure on Venezuela's embattled leader Nicolas Maduro in his State of the Union address on Tuesday, doubling down on US support for his challenger Juan Guaido. "We stand with the Venezuelan people in their noble quest for freedom," Trump is set to say, according to excerpts from his annual speech to Congress -- where the opposition leader's envoy to Washington was among the top guests. Trump swiftly recognized Guaido after he proclaimed himself acting president of Venezuela last month, and has not ruled out a military intervention in the crisis-wracked country. |
On abortion, Trump agenda likely leads to Supreme Court, not Congress Posted: 06 Feb 2019 11:07 AM PST Bolstered by Trump's appointment of two conservative justices, the nine-member court could soon begin to pare back abortion rights, starting with a major case from Louisiana that is one of several similar pending appeals. The addition of Trump appointees Brett Kavanaugh and Neil Gorsuch could alter the conservative-majority court's approach to abortion. Kavanaugh replaced Justice Anthony Kennedy, a conservative who backed abortion rights in key rulings in 1992 and 2016. |
Virginia AG Admits He Wore Blackface at College Party Posted: 06 Feb 2019 08:44 AM PST Virginia attorney general Mark Herring, who would assume the governorship should Governor Ralph Northam and Lieutenant Governor Justin Fairfax resign due to their own scandals, admitted Wednesday that he wore blackface at a college party in 1980. "In 1980, when I was a 19-year-old undergraduate in college, some friends suggested we attend a party dressed like rappers we listened to at the time, like Kurtis Blow and perform a song," Herring wrote in a statement. Herring's revelation is the latest in a string of scandals that have embroiled Virginia Democrats in recent days. |

Tusk’s ‘Place in Hell’ Jibe Reflects Fear and Frustration in Brussels Posted: 06 Feb 2019 02:30 PM PST A longer-than-scheduled, bad-tempered phone call between May and Tusk a week ago prompted a surge of concern in EU circles that May is unable to get any divorce deal through Parliament, according to European officials who declined to be named. Tusk was horrified that May was still asking the EU for solutions to end the impasse rather than coming up with credible ones of her own. May visits Brussels on Thursday as part of her efforts to get the EU to change the most controversial part of the divorce deal -- the Irish border backstop. |

Slovakia declines to back Venezuela's Guaido as Maduro faces rising pressure Posted: 06 Feb 2019 12:48 PM PST Slovakia declined to recognize opposition leader Juan Guaido as Venezuela's legitimate head of state on Wednesday, joining Italy in breaking the coordinated action of European Union nations and the United States. About 20 European Union nations including Britain, Germany, France and Spain have aligned with the United States in recognizing Guaido's leadership and pressuring socialist President Nicolas Maduro to call a new election. Slovakia's foreign ministry said last week the country saw Guaido, the head of Venezuela's National Assembly, as the only legitimate representative of its people and called for a new election. |
The Northam Controversy Is a Perfect Moment to Reflect on Our History Posted: 06 Feb 2019 03:30 AM PST There is a strange serendipity to having the scandal over Virginia governor Ralph Northam's past racist behavior break at the start of Black History Month. It serves as a timely reminder of both America's racial sins and the progress that we've made to overcome them. From lynching to the rise and fall and rise of the Klan to legally enforced segregation, slavery was followed by more than a century and a half of second-class citizenship. And even in the decades since the worst aspects of Jim Crow were finally outlawed in the 1960s, the treatment of African Americans has remained unequal. |

Magnetic north pole leaves Canada, on fast new path Posted: 05 Feb 2019 12:08 PM PST The position of the Earth's magnetic North Pole -- used in navigation systems such as smartphones -- is moving far faster than it has, sending scientists scrambling to put out a new model this week. The magnetic North is the point at which the planet's magnetic field points vertically down. The World Magnetic Model is critical to sea and military navigation -- as well as our ubiquitous smartphones. |

U.N. warns against politicizing humanitarian aid in Venezuela Posted: 06 Feb 2019 01:46 PM PST U.S. officials said trucks carrying aid had arrived in Colombia for delivery to Venezuela at the request of Juan Guaido, who last month declared himself interim president. "The Venezuelan people desperately need humanitarian aid. The U.S. & other countries are trying to help, but Venezuela's military under Maduro's orders is blocking aid with trucks and shipping tankers," U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo posted on Twitter on Wednesday, along with a photo of a blocked road. |
Posted: 06 Feb 2019 11:31 AM PST A Fox Business Network presenter blamed the fact schools have being teaching children "fairness" after the organisation's own polling showed there was overwhelming support for higher taxes on multi-millionaires. Democratic senator Elizabeth Warren has proposed a "wealth tax" for those earning more than $50m and has won support from both Democrats and Republicans. In response to the poll, Charles Payne, host of Fox Business Network's Making Money with Charles Payne, said: "The idea of fairness has been promoted in our schools for a long time. |
May Heads to Northern Ireland in Search for a Brexit Answer Posted: 05 Feb 2019 12:51 AM PST The embattled premier has until next week to secure changes to the backstop -- the insurance policy meant to keep the Irish border open in the absence of a broader trade deal -- that will satisfy anti-EU members of her Conservative Party and win her a majority in Parliament. To do so, she is trying to reopen talks with Brussels on the deal she spent 18 months negotiating before Parliament rejected it by a record margin last month. |

Toyota cuts full-year profit forecast, warns over Brexit Posted: 06 Feb 2019 01:37 AM PST Japanese car giant Toyota slashed its full-year net profit forecast Wednesday after saying its nine-month figure had tumbled nearly 30 percent as it was hit by investment losses. The firm's senior managing officer Masayoshi Shirayanagi also told reporters there was no way to avoid a negative impact in the event of a no-deal Brexit -- days after fellow Japanese carmaker Nissan announced a cut in production in Britain. The maker of the Camry sedan and Prius hybrid now expects annual net profit of 1.87 trillion yen ($17 billion) instead of the 2.3 trillion yen it projected three months ago. |
Apple Watch ‘fall detection’ feature credited with saving man’s life Posted: 04 Feb 2019 06:03 PM PST One of the more interesting things about the Apple Watch is how the narrative behind the wearable has seemingly done a 180. Early on, the Apple Watch was positioned as something of a fashion accessory. Remember, for instance, the outrageously expensive Apple Watch Edition? Today, in sharp contrast, Apple prefers to tout the device as a fitness tracker and health monitor. Over the last few months, we've seen quite a few stories involving the heart rate monitor on the Apple Watch being used to detect potentially life-threatening health conditions. Indeed, it's no exaggeration to say that the Apple Watch has helped save numerous lives at this point. And now comes word that the fall detection feature first introduced on the Apple Watch Series 4 has started saving lives as well. According to a report from NRK, a 67-year old from Norway named Toralv Østvang credits his Apple Watch with saving his life. The story is that Østvang experienced a serious fall in his bathroom whereupon his Apple Watch automatically contacted rescue personnel. Recall, the Apple Watch, upon detecting a fall, will send a message to local emergency services -- along with information regarding your location -- if it detects that a user has been immobile for a full minute following a fall. About a half hour after the fall, rescue workers arrived on the scene and found Østvang lying on his bathroom floor, unconscious and bloody. In the midst of the fall, Østvang also sustained three fractures to his face. The fall detection feature on the Apple Watch is obviously geared towards older folks and, as a result, is off by default unless a user happens to be 65 or older. |

Afghan president says he will oppose peace deal without his government Posted: 05 Feb 2019 10:25 AM PST Ghani's government has so far been shut out of the evolving peace talks between Taliban negotiators and U.S. envoys to end more than 17 years of war, with the hardline Islamist movement branding his government as a U.S. puppet. "At the end of any peace deal, the decision-maker will be the government of Afghanistan," Ghani told TOLO News, the country's largest private television station. "No power in the country can dissolve the government," he said, adding that he was ready to "stand and defend our country". |

The American president chose Neomi Rao for a seat on the US Circuit Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit which was left empty after Mr Kavanaugh joined the Supreme Court. The 45-year-old currently serves as administrator of the White House Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs, and used to work for the George W Bush administration. |

Monsanto versus farmer battle goes into 4th judicial round Posted: 05 Feb 2019 08:17 PM PST A 12-year-old judicial battle pitting a cereal farmer against Monsanto, the biotech giant, goes to a fourth round Wednesday before the French courts. Farmer Paul Francois won his initial case in 2012, and its appeal by Monsanto in 2015, after suing the US firm for poisoning him through inhalation of its Lasso weedkiller. Now, after a technical review by the final court of appeal, the case gets bounced back to appeal level after a ruling by the higher court that the case should be decided not so much on whether Monsanto provided adequate information about its product, but on whether its chemicals were dangerous, according to Francois Lafforgue, one of the farmer's lawyers. |

Qatar, Exxon Mobil to build $10 bn LNG plant in Texas Posted: 05 Feb 2019 12:11 PM PST Qatar Petroleum and Exxon Mobil announced Tuesday a final decision to build a natural gas export facility in Texas, giving the official green light to a long-discussed project. The Golden Pass project in Sabine Pass, Texas, which will cost more than $10 billion, is scheduled to begin construction in the first quarter of 2019, with a start up date in 2024, the companies said. The venture is the latest to underscore the shifting complexion of US energy in the wake of a shale boom that has prompted companies to pivot from building facilities to import liquefied natural gas (LNG) to exporting the fuel. |
