Trump news: President 'doesn't regret' tweeting 9/11 video about Ilhan Omar, as first 2020 Republican challenger emerges

Trump news: President 'doesn't regret' tweeting 9/11 video about Ilhan Omar, as first 2020 Republican challenger emergesPresident Trump has pledged his support to the people of France after the iconic Notre Dame cathedral suffered a devastating fire last night. On Twitter, the president noted it was "horrible" to watch the scenes from Paris, and suggested "flying water tankers could be used to put it out." It was confirmed this morning that the fire had been entirely extinguished. The White House said it will offer France "assistance in the rehabilitation of this irreplaceable symbol of Western civilization.""The United States stands with French citizens, the city of Paris, and the millions of visitors from around the world who have sought solace in that iconic structure," Press Secretary Sarah Sanders said.Closer to home, Trump is also facing his first Republican challenger for the 2020 presidential election in the form of Massachusetts governor Bill Weld, although is it deemed unlikely that anyone will seize the party's nomination from the incumbent."I really think if we have six more years of the same stuff we've had out of the White House the last two years that would be a political tragedy, and I would fear for the Republic," Mr Weld told CNN's Jake Tapper on Tuesday. "I would be ashamed of myself if I didn't raise my hand and run.It was also announced late yesterday that the Mueller report into Russian interference in the 2020 presidential election, and any links to the Trump campaign, would be released in a redacted form to the public this Thursday. The president also defended his attack on Rep. Ilhan Omar despite an onslaught of death threats the Muslim congresswoman received recently. In an interview with a local news station in Minnesota, Mr Trump continued to disparage Ms Omar. "It's unfortunate," he said. "She's got a way about her that's very, very bad, I think, for our country. I think she's extremely unpatriotic and extremely disrespectful to our country."Read The Independent's updates as they happened below. Please allow a moment for the liveblog to load

German far right tries to link Notre-Dame fire to anti-Christian 'attacks'A leader of Germany's far-right AfD party on Tuesday tried to link the devastating fire at Paris' Notre-Dame cathedral to rising "intolerance" against Christians in Europe, although French investigators believe the inferno was an accident. In a tweet, Alice Weidel, the parliamentary group leader of the Alternative for Germany, the country's largest opposition party, implied a connection between Monday's blaze and previous anti-Christian "attacks" in France. Bernie’s Fox News Town Hall Was a Ratings Smash. More Dems May Follow Him There.

Posted: 16 Apr 2019 11:56 AM PDT

Bernie's Fox News Town Hall Was a Ratings Smash. More Dems May Follow Him There.Sen. Bernie Sanders' (I-VT) Monday evening Fox News town hall event was the most-watched town hall event of the 2020 campaign thus far, according to early Nielsen data. And at least four other Democratic candidates are open to participating in one of their own. According to early Nielsen data, more than 2.5 million viewers tuned in to hear Sanders, a self-described "democratic socialist," make his case on Fox News during the 6:30pm hour, prior to primetime. That total viewership bested CNN's Bernie Sanders town hall event from back in February; and it doubled MSNBC's during the same time period on Monday evening, and nearly tripled CNN's. The prior town hall ratings record for the 2020 cycle was a CNN-hosted event with Sen. Kamala Harris (D-CA), which drew 1.95 million total viewers. Additionally, per Nielsen, Fox's Sanders event brought in 489,000 viewers between the ages of 25 and 54—a key demographic for cable-news advertisers—trouncing CNN's 281,000 tally and MSNBC's 208,000.The event, which took place in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, saw the Vermont senator discuss a wide range of topics and occasionally spar with moderators Bret Baier and Martha MacCallum. The Democratic National Committee banned the network from hosting one of its sanctioned debates, citing a New Yorker report on the network's close ties to President Trump. But the success of Sanders' town hall event—both in terms of ratings and the headlines generated—comes as at least three other presidential campaigns consider being involved in a similar event.South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg is in talks to participate in a Fox News town hall, a campaign aide told The Daily Beast, and he had been prior to the airing of Sanders' event. Meanwhile, the campaign for Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-CA)—the latest entry into the crowded Democratic contest—said "he's willing to do a Fox town hall, and we expect to start discussions with the network soon regarding a time and place." Discussions about doing so have not yet begun, according to the campaign but Swalwell had previously told The Daily Beast that he makes efforts to appear on the network. Julia Krieger, communications director for Rep. Tim Ryan's (D-OH) presidential campaign said that he is also "willing to do a town hall with Fox News," adding that "the campaign has reached out proactively to the network to express interest in this type of forum." She said that the network had also reached out to them. And Jennifer Fiore, a senior adviser to Julián Castro's campaign, told The Daily Beast that they are in conversations with the network as well."He's been a red state mayor and has always campaigned hard for every single vote on both sides of the aisle and will do the same thing in his campaign for president of the United States because everybody counts," she said. The network had previously said they hoped the DNC would reconsider its position on hosting a debate on Fox."We hope the DNC will reconsider its decision to bar Chris Wallace, Bret Baier and Martha MacCallum, all of whom embody the ultimate journalistic integrity and professionalism, from moderating a Democratic presidential debate," said Bill Sammon, Fox News' senior vice president and D.C. managing editor. "They're the best debate team in the business and they offer candidates an important opportunity to make their case to the largest TV news audience in America, which includes many persuadable voters."Update 6:25 P.M.: This story was updated to reflect an additional statement from Castro's campaign. —Andrew Kirell and Scott Bixby contributed reporting.Read more at The Daily Beast.Got a tip? How Notre-Dame can be rebuilt, what was cause of fire and what happens next: Q&A

Posted: 16 Apr 2019 02:14 AM PDT

How Notre-Dame can be rebuilt, what was cause of fire and what happens next: Q&AFrance woke up to the grim spectacle of Notre Dame standing without its spire and its roof in ruins on Tuesday morning.  Now, with the blaze under control and only a few patches of embers still glowing, the Herculean task of rebuilding the 850-year-old cathedral begins. Will Notre Dame be rebuilt? Speaking at the scene of the fire on Monday night, French president Emmanuel Macron vowed to restore Notre Dame to its former glory.  "We'll rebuild this cathedral all together and it's undoubtedly part of the French destiny and the project we'll have for the coming years," he said.  "That's what the French expect [and] because it's what our history deserves," he added, his voice shaking with emotion, calling it a "terrible tragedy". Mr Macron appealed to the world for help in restoring the cathedral, as well as support from French citizens. There is likely to be an outpouring of donations from all around the world.  It is feasible  that British experts in restoration may offer their services to France if they are needed in rebuilding cathedral structure.  Notre-Dame cathedral locator map How badly was Notre Dame damaged?  French restoration artists will need to repair the entire roof of Notre Dame along with its spire. Both burned to cinders in Monday night's fire, and there is a risk that falling debris has caused yet more damage to the cathedral's interior.  It is unclear how long it would take to complete the repair works, but they would be a major undertaking on a jewel of French history which has towered over the capital for centuries.  Astonishingly, considering the scale of the fire, the edifice of Notre Dame has been preserved according to Paris officials, with both distinctive bell towers intact.  The same goes for the altar in the cathedral's altar and organ, both of them miraculously spared by the blaze.  notre dame gallery Paris' deputy mayor said Notre-Dame's organ, one of the biggest and most famous in the world, remains intact after the fire. The organ dates to the 1730s and was constructed by Francois Thierry. It boasts an estimated 8,000 pipes. Emmanuel Gregoire told BFMTV that a plan to protect the cathedral's treasures had been rapidly and successfully activated. Mr Gregoire also described "enormous relief" at the salvaging of pieces such as the purported Crown of Christ. What about the relics and artwork inside?  Precious relics, such as the Thorn of Crowns which Catholics believe was worn by Jesus at his Crucifixion, were also rescued from Notre Dame even as the flames raged across its roof.  A number of treasured paintings were also being stored in the cathedral, and Paris officials say those too were rescued from the fire.  The same cannot be said of Notre Dame's spire, which dramatically collapsed shortly after the fire began at 7pm on Monday evening.  Notre-Dame | Which artefacts were saved? What caused the fire?  The cause of the fire has not been confirmed, but it is understood to be an accident linked to renovation works on the cathedral roof.  French prosecutors have opened an investigation into "accidental damage," while one official told the Daily Mail that a "stray flame" could be behind the conflagration. According to French media reports, all French renovation workers had left the building when the fire broke out.  What happens now? Paris now faces questions as to why the fire spread so rapidly and whether it could have been prevented.  As it is no secret that Notre Dame had been in a state of disrepair for some time, it will also be claimed that the city should have acted sooner to protect the cathedral from fire hazards.  Read more | Notre-Dame fire The organisation carrying out the renovation works is also likely to be questions closely by French prosecutors, but at this stage there is no suggestion of any foul play.  If prosecutors came to believe that that someone had started the fire on purpose then criminal charges would follow.

Pete Buttigieg’s Abortion Extremism Hurts His Religious Appeal

Posted: 16 Apr 2019 11:53 AM PDT

Pete Buttigieg's Abortion Extremism Hurts His Religious AppealWith every passing day, it seems we see yet another piece about South Bend mayor Pete Buttigieg's progressive Christianity. His faith is going to shake the race. He's going to challenge the GOP monopoly on "God talk." Here, for example, is the opening paragraph of an NBC News analysis posted yesterday afternoon:> Religious conservatives who have long been a reliable voting bloc for Republicans are grappling with a new challenge in Pete Buttigieg: how to respond to a Democratic presidential candidate who is leaning into the discussion about faith and its role in political life.I'll agree that there are religious conservatives who are "grappling" with a challenge from Buttigieg, but that challenge is theological and cultural, not political. Buttigieg's religious arguments have triggered important online debates about the differences between mainline and Evangelical Christianity, about when religious teachings should influence public policy, and about how to interpret the history of the gay-marriage debate. But religious conservatives are not grappling with the key political question — whether any meaningful number of Evangelicals or conservative Catholics would cross the aisle to cast a ballot for Mayor Pete. The reason is simple. Buttigieg is a pro-choice extremist, and no pro-choice extremist will ever meaningfully compete for the conservative Christian vote.In fact, in at least one key way, Buttigieg's record on abortion is even worse than that of his Democratic peers. He is of course in lockstep agreement with them on support for late-term abortion, and he made that clear last month on Morning Joe:> .@PeteButtigieg explains his support for late-term abortion bills in New York and Virginia: > > "When we're talking about some of those situations covered by that law … the involvement of a male government official like me is not helpful." pic.twitter.com/6lQrLLhwhW> > -- Matthew Schmitz (@matthewschmitz) March 31, 2019But he's done what many of them have not — he's actually blocked a crisis-pregnancy center from opening at its chosen location. He not only supports abortion rights, he's taken action against law-abiding Americans who merely wanted to make the case for life.Last April, Buttigieg vetoed a rezoning plan that would have permitted a crisis-pregnancy center to open next door to a proposed abortion clinic. In his statement justifying the veto, Buttigieg said, "I don't think it would be responsible to situate two groups, literally right next to each other, in a neighborhood, that have diametrically opposed views on the most divisive social issue of our time."And so, given the conflict, he chose to privilege the abortion clinic's location over the pregnancy center. Thankfully, the center found a new location across the street from the proposed clinic — a location that didn't require a rezoning vote. But that does not excuse or justify Buttigieg's veto. He favored abortion rights over pro-life speech, and he likely violated the Constitution in doing so.While Buttigieg, to his credit, did not demonize his opponents in the South Bend dispute ( "Many people that I respect and admire and appreciate have very passionate and very opposite views on what is the right thing to do," he said of the dispute), actions speak louder than words. And this action echoes a dangerous Democratic trend in pro-choice governance: the attack against pro-life pregnancy clinics.Across the United States, progressive legislatures have passed laws aimed at crisis-pregnancy centers, including a California law the Supreme Court struck down just last summer. Buttigieg hasn't gone as far as California, which actually required pro-life pregnancy centers to promote state-funded free and low-cost abortions. But he had an opportunity to fully respect the constitutional rights of his pro-life opponents, and he chose not to do so.Many young Evangelicals, including young Evangelical activists, are divided over matters such as same-sex marriage. Some believe Obergefell v. Hodges was wrongly decided, others support legal recognition of same-sex marriage so long as the state doesn't interfere with the church's ability to define marriage according to the historic doctrines of the Christian faith. Others support same-sex marriage constitutionally and theologically. These same young Christians are often appalled that their older brothers and sisters in the faith have so easily overlooked Donald Trump's multitude of sins. But they will not support politicians who support legal protections for late-term abortions. They won't. The will not support politicians who don't go beyond "respecting" pro-life Americans to also protecting their rights to free speech with the same vigor that they protect the First Amendment rights of pro-choice Americans. In the summer of 2016, I had hours of conversations with anguished Evangelical activists. They did not like Donald Trump. They could not believe the hypocrisy of some pastors defending a man whom they'd condemn if he had a "D" by his name. But they also could not believe that the Democrats wouldn't compromise at all on abortion, not even in the third trimester. More than one person told me of this issue, "If only they'd moderate a little, I'd consider crossing the aisle. But they won't, so I can't."Those words will still be true in 2020, and while Buttigieg's lack of overt hostility to pro-life citizens is welcome — and conversations about America's competing Christian world views are interesting — he has zero appeal to religious conservatives so long as he holds to the Democratic party line on the right of a woman to hire a doctor to kill a viable, living unborn baby. There is nothing to "grapple" with. There is no "challenge." There are lines that Christian conservatives must not — and will not — cross.

The Tuesday losses capped the worst five-day stretch since 2011 for health insurers, despite UnitedHealth reporting earnings that beat analysts' estimates and raising its 2019 forecast. Parents Accuse D.C. Synagogue of Enabling ‘Systemic, Regular’ Sexual Abuse of Preschoolers

Posted: 16 Apr 2019 08:49 AM PDT

Parents Accuse D.C. Synagogue of Enabling 'Systemic, Regular' Sexual Abuse of PreschoolersGettyA group of parents are suing a prominent Washington D.C. synagogue, alleging one preschool teacher sexually abused eight toddlers for more than two years and the school ignored the warning signs. The 239-page civil lawsuit, filed anonymously by eight parents in Superior Court for the District of Columbia on Monday evening, alleged that the toddlers between the ages of two and four, "were subject to systemic and regular sexual abuse on school property" by an assistant teacher at the Washington Hebrew Congregation. The alleged abuser, Jordan Silverman, joined the preschool in 2016 after a career as a Vermont photographer. Although Silverman is not named as defendant in the lawsuit, he is named for the alleged "grievous, demeaning and damaging forms of sexual abuse.""On what we believe was a daily basis, Silverman would remove a small group of children, maybe two or three children at a time, and he would take them to remote locations both inside and outside the building," Michael Dolce, who is representing the families, told The Daily Beast on Tuesday. "We believed that is where he abused the children. He was able, and sometimes encouraged, to be alone with these children, despite it being a direct violation of D.C.'s 'two-deep' policy."The Reform Jewish synagogue and its director of early-childhood education, Deborah "DJ" Schneider Jensen, are the focus of the complaint, which claimed the administration failed to "protect children from a known and avoidable risk of sexual abuse."The lawsuit also noted that the preschool teacher was given the opportunity to be alone with students despite city regulations that state "at least two adults must be present with toddlers in licensed child development centers." "Silverman was hired to teach and care for children despite having no professional background in teaching or providing child care," the complaint stated, additionally claiming the school failed to properly train staff on ways to reduce the opportunity for child sexual abuse and to recognize the warning signs. About a month after starting at Washington Hebrew, teachers and parents allegedly reported Silverman's inappropriate behavior to Jensen, which included being "late returning children when he had been alone with them and was not reachable or responsive to efforts by co-workers to locate him and the children." The congregation and Jensen allegedly ignored these claims, sometimes even defending Silverman. In one instance, when one parent raised concerns about possible abuse, Jensen allegedly said he had a "'sick mind' and insisted that Silverman would not abuse a child" despite increasing amounts of reports that preschoolers were "behaving abnormally" after spending time with the assistant teacher. "Ms. Jensen was given countless opportunities to protect these children and instead, she never investigated any claim against Silverman, never restricted his access to children, and never even reported the claims to city officials," Dolce said. The Metropolitan Police Department of the District of Columbia confirmed to The Daily Beast on Tuesday a police investigation into alleged child sexual abuse at the school is ongoing after the school reported a preschooler claimed to have been abused last August. Police could confirm whether Silverman was a suspect, citing the "ongoing investigation.""In August 2018, Washington Hebrew Congregation immediately reported the allegations to D.C. Metropolitan Police Department (MPDC) and Child Protective Services as soon as we learned of them," Amy Rotenberg, a spokesperson for the congregation told The Daily Beast on Tuesday. "Since that moment and for the past eight months we have continually and fully cooperated with the ongoing criminal investigation."Silverman, who was fired from the school last August, could not be immediately reached for comment. The families are suing for an unspecified amount of damages, claiming the school's negligence has left a lifetime of emotional distress, medical costs, and therapy for the children. To maintain the integrity of the police investigation and protect the children, the lawsuit did not go into detail about the alleged abuse. "At the end of the day, this man performed horrible and significant sex crimes against small children and the people that were supposed to protect them turned a blind eye," Dolce said. "Silverman is only one part of this horrible story."As of Tuesday morning, the Washington Hebrew Congregation have offered "no apology and no medication" to any of the alleged victims, Dolce added.  Read more at The Daily Beast.Got a tip? First Stealth: Could the Legendary F-117 Still Go To War for America's Air Force?

First Stealth: Could the Legendary F-117 Still Go To War for America's Air Force? But that's the real advantage of the F-22 and F-35 over not only the F-117, but also the Russian PAK-FA and Chinese J-20 and J-31. The F-117 was entirely dependent on an autorouter to map out its course to avoid threats before each mission. Both the F-22 and the F-35 have the ability to map out threats in real time and are equipped with pilot vehicle interfaces that can make sense of that information for the pilot. In that respect, the Joint Strike Fighter is head and shoulders above the Raptor thanks to years of technological advancements. With the U.S. Air Force considering the future makeup of its force structure, it is a good time to look at the evolution of stealth starting with the Lockheed Martin F-117 Nighthawk. That aircraft was retired in 2008, but would the F-117 still be useful today? The answer is that against most mid-range threats like Iran, absolutely. But against higher-end threats like Russia or China, not so much. Technology has advanced since engineers first dreamed up the F-117 "stealth fighter" concept.(This first appeared several years ago.)

Why Isn't American Express Accepted Everywhere?

Why Isn't American Express Accepted Everywhere? It has a lot to do with the fees credit card companies charge merchants when you make a purchase. Some merchants choose to not accept cards that charge higher swipe fees than others, like American Express. While the notion that American Express swipe fees are significantly higher than other credit card companies' swipe fees may be a bit of a myth, the fact is American Express has a lower acceptance rate than other card networks.

Apple rumored to launch a refreshed iPhone 8 with upgraded specs next March

Apple rumored to launch a refreshed iPhone 8 with upgraded specs next MarchApple is expected to launch three new "iPhone 11" models this fall, which will be the successors to the iPhone XR, iPhone XS, and iPhone XS Max. But new reports claim that Apple could also unveil additional devices meant to court smartphone buyers who are either looking for cheaper iPhones or want smaller phones.A report a few days ago said that an iPhone SE successor is in the works \-- a device that would feature an iPhone XS-like design. A new report out of Asia, meanwhile, describes a more familiar smartphone design, one that Apple is expected to recycle come March 2020: An iPhone 8 refresh. We'll call it iPhone 8s, as the Economic Daily News doesn't mention an actual product name. The report, however, provides several details about the upcoming iPhone 8 refresh. The iPhone 8s would apparently have the same design as the iPhone 8, complete with Touch ID fingerprint sensor on the front and single-lens camera on the back. But the device will have the same hardware as the upcoming 2019 iPhone flagships, including an A13 processor. Other specs include 128GB of base memory, a Full HD 4.7-inch display, and a new PCB design. The new handset would sell for $649, the report notes, targeting a price point that Apple ignored in recent years.By refreshing the iPhone 8, Apple would be in a position where it could still sell phones featuring a classic design to customers who are interested in compact iPhone designs featuring fingerprint sensors instead of Face ID. The iPhone 8 is as big as the iPhone X and XS in terms of overall size, but it has a smaller screen (4.7-inch vs. 5.8-inch) due to its bezels. Also, a $650 iPhone could help Apple compete better against Chinese smartphone makers in several Asian markets, where it's becoming increasingly difficult to sell expensive flagships (like the iPhone XS).If all these new reports turn out to be accurate, Apple may end up selling up to five new iPhones in the span of a few months, including the 2019 iPhone XS and XR models, the rumored iPhone SE 2, and this iPhone 8 refresh.

How Russia's Very Own Su-35 Might Mean Doom For the Su-57 Stealth Fighter

Posted: 16 Apr 2019 09:00 AM PDT

How Russia's Very Own Su-35 Might Mean Doom For the Su-57 Stealth FighterThe Su-35S was intended as an interim solution; as a modernized air superiority fighter to sustain the Russian Aerospace Forces (VKS) through the 2010's until the Su-57 fifth-generation stealth fighter enters serial production. But the Su-35S was almost too successful for its own good, ticking so many performance and role versatility boxes that it seems to cannibalize its more expensive Su-57 successor. In the short term, it's likely true that there will be a minimal operational difference between the latest Su-35S units and the first serially-produced Su-57's. As it currently stands, there is even a chance that the two fighters may use the same AL-41F1 engine."A unique machine, a deadly aerial fist," is how the official television channel of the Russian Ministry of Defense introduced the Su-35S superiority fighter earlier this week.TV Zvezda's three-minute clip of a recent Su-35S training sortie over Syria provides close-up shots of the fighter jet being prepped for flight, taking off, cruising over the Syrian coast, and firing flares. On their youtube account, they published slightly extended footage of the same exercise.
