Portland protest clashes re-emerge near US courthouse Posted: 12 Aug 2020 11:54 PM PDT Protesters and police clashed in downtown Portland in a demonstration that lasted into the predawn hours of Thursday, with some in the crowd setting a fire and exploding commercial grade fireworks outside a federal courthouse that's been a target in months of conflict for Oregon's largest city. Officers used tear gas to break up the crowd of several hundred people who gathered near the Mark O. Hatfield U.S. Courthouse, the neighboring Multnomah County Justice Center and a nearby police precinct station. Protesters hurled rocks, bottles and paint at officers during the demonstration that started Wednesday night and went into Thursday morning, Portland police said in a statement. |
North Korea nuclear reactor site threatened by recent flooding, U.S. think-tank says Posted: 12 Aug 2020 07:58 PM PDT Satellite imagery suggests recent flooding in North Korea may have damaged pump houses connected to the country's main nuclear facility, a U.S.-based think-tank said on Thursday. Analysts at 38 North, a website that monitors North Korea, said commercial satellite imagery from August 6-11 showed how vulnerable the Yongbyon Nuclear Scientific Research Center's nuclear reactor cooling systems are to extreme weather events. The Korean peninsula has been hammered by one of the longest rainy spells in recent history, with floods and landslides causing damage and deaths in both North and South Korea. |

What No Student Loan Payments Until 2021 Means for You Posted: 13 Aug 2020 04:03 AM PDT You don't have to make another federal student loan payment in 2020. Federal student loan borrowers were already in an automatic interest-free pause on payments as part of the original coronavirus relief bill, known as the CARES Act. This pause was expected to expire Sept. 30, but an extension of the forbearance through Dec. 31 was directed in a memorandum signed by President Donald Trump on Aug. 8. |

Team Trump Isn’t Even Hiding Its Support for QAnon Kooks Anymore Posted: 12 Aug 2020 01:02 PM PDT The Trump campaign and a top House Republican group are rallying around a QAnon conspiracy theorist expected to win a seat in the House this November, even attacking a GOP lawmaker who criticized the conspiracy theory that the FBI considers a domestic terrorism threat. QAnon believer Marjorie Taylor Greene won a Republican primary run-off in Georgia's 14th Congressional District on Tuesday. Because Greene's district is heavily Republican, her primary win all but guarantees that a QAnon supporter will take a spot in Congress in November.Until now, leading Republicans have typically avoided openly embracing the party's QAnon supporters, who follow a series of internet clues that have been posted by a mysterious figure called "Q" since October 2017. QAnon believers embrace a theory of the world that imagines Trump is engaged in a secret war against a pedophile-cannibal "cabal" in the Democratic Party, Hollywood, and other institutions. The Shocking Secret Past of One of QAnon's Most Toxic StarsQAnon believers are obsessed with a moment called "The Storm," the much-awaited day they believe Trump will order mass-arrests of his political opponents and either imprison them in Guantanamo Bay or subject them to military execution. The FBI considers QAnon a potential domestic terror threat, and QAnon believers have allegedly committed two murders, a terrorist incident, and plotted two child abductions, among other crimes. Top GOP leaders have embraced Greene now that she has won the nomination. Donald Trump praised her in a tweet on Tuesday, calling her a "future Republican Star." > Congratulations to future Republican Star Marjorie Taylor Greene on a big Congressional primary win in Georgia against a very tough and smart opponent. Marjorie is strong on everything and never gives up - a real WINNER!> > — Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) August 12, 2020The National Republican Congressional Committee, the House GOP's campaign arm, defended Greene, deflecting media requests about Greene and QAnon by comparing her to Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN)."And then why hasn't the media asked every House Democrat if they will support racist anti-Semite @IlhanMN after she won her primary last night?" NRCC spokesman Chris Pack tweeted, suggesting that Greene's conspiracy theories were only being highlighted because she's a Republican. "What's the (D)iffe(R)ence between the two?"> THIS -- And then why hasn't the media asked every House Democrat if they will support racist anti-Semite @IlhanMN after she won her primary last night? What's the (D)iffe(R)ence between the two? https://t.co/v7VJMXdUcp> > — Chris Pack (@ChrisPack716) August 12, 2020Rep. Adam Kinzinger (R-IL) was the only House Republican to publicly push back on the idea of a QAnon believer winning a congressional seat, tweeting after Greene's primary win that QAnon is a "fabrication" that has "no place in Congress." Kinzinger also suggested that QAnon could be a Russian disinformation operation. In response, a senior Trump campaign official attacked Kinzinger. Rather than address Greene's support for QAnon, the campaign's deputy communications director Matt Wolking tweeted that Kinzinger should focus instead on the dossier former British spy Christopher Steele produced on Trump's campaign."That actually WAS Russian propaganda," Wolking wrote. > When will @RepKinzinger condemn the Steele Dossier fabrications and conspiracy theories pushed by Democrats? That actually WAS Russian propaganda. https://t.co/NzVjbkkk8l> > — Matt Wolking (Text TRUMP to 88022) (@MattWolking) August 12, 2020Republican leaders had initially been more hostile to Greene. Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) and Minority Whip Steve Scalise (R-LA) initially denounced her when she placed first in a June primary, after Politico reported remarks Greene had made calling Black voters "slaves" to Democrats, questioning whether Muslims should be allowed to hold public office, and accusing billionaire Democratic donor George Soros, a Holocaust survivor, of being a Nazi.Trump's embrace of Greene represents his latest sign of support for QAnon believers. Over the years, as he has increasingly crossed paths with QAnon believers in person and on Twitter, Trump has gained a passing familiarity with the wide-ranging conspiracy theory. Occasionally, he's seen segments bubble up on cable-news programs about QAnon, leading him to ask close advisers what it is and what they think about it.At times, he's expressed confusion when discussing the subject with others. "I tried explaining the phenomenon to him as best I could, and told [Trump] it would be wise to stay the hell away from it," said a source who'd briefly spoken to Trump about QAnon in the past year. "When I tried giving a one- or two-sentence explanation of what QAnon was, he said something like, 'So it's about [James] Comey being a dirty cop?' and I said it was more complicated than that."Trump hasn't taken that advice to keep QAnon at a distance—at least not enough to keep one of the batshit theory's top adherents, a YouTuber who goes by Lionel Lebron, out of an Oval Office photo op, grinning side-by-side the president, just two years ago. The bizarre incident created a weekend headache for some of Trump's top aides, who scrambled to figure out how, exactly, a QAnon promoter managed to score an intimate audience with the leader of the free world. In the intervening years, QAnon has become something of a supporting cast member in Trumpworld, to the point that Trump's former national security adviser and MAGA cause célèbre Michael Flynn has publicly bear-hugged his fervent Q-related following by filming himself taking the "QAnon oath."Trump frequently retweets QAnon fans, which the conspiracy theory's promoters use as proof that their outlandish ideas are true. Last year, a video from the Trump reelection campaign featured multiple Q signs, and diehard supporters of the president wouldn't stop showing up to his mega-rallies sporting Q gear, for themselves, their friends, and sometimes their babies and small children. In June, Eric Trump posted a QAnon meme on Instagram, though he later deleted it.The QAnon presence at Trump events became so undeniable that unidentified personnel at the rallies began ordering them to turn their shirts inside out and to put away their Q swag. "No non-Trump-related political messaging is permitted inside the venue. We do our best to ensure this rule is fully enforced," Michael Glassner, then-chief operating officer of Trump 2020, told The Daily Beast at the time, though making sure not to mention the term "QAnon."Late last year, when QAnon was rapidly becoming a recurring nuisance for the president's team, one senior Trump campaign official said that the standard operating procedure among staff had been to "ignore them" and not "make a big deal out of" it, largely in the hopes of avoiding "pissing off the crazy" people and depriving them of further media coverage or attention. On Wednesday, though, Trump heralded one of their own as a rising star in the Republican Party.Still, not every heavy-hitter or fan favorite in the president's orbit is sold on Q. Former Trump aide Sebastian Gorka, for instance, has clashed with believers online, railing against the conspiracy theory as "GARBAGE." Huge fire north of Los Angeles prompts evacuations Posted: 12 Aug 2020 08:38 PM PDT A fast-moving brush fire north of Los Angeles prompted mandatory evacuation orders for some 500 homes on Wednesday as firefighters battled the flames that had burned 10,000 acres by early evening, authorities said. Rapidly-spreading flames had scorched some 10,000 acres (4,050 hectares) within a little more than three hours, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department. "Multiple agencies are battling a brush fire near the Lake Hughes area in the Angeles National Forest," the department said in a tweet. |
Portland State disarms campus police after Black man's death Posted: 13 Aug 2020 02:00 PM PDT Portland State University said Thursday it will disarm its campus police force, more than two years after officers from the department shot and killed a Black man who was trying to break up a fight close to campus. Portland State President Stephen Percy said the decision to have officers patrol the campus unarmed is the first step in a broader policy to re-imagine safety at the state-funded university in the heart of the city. Activists had been calling for Portland State to disarm campus police long before Floyd's death. |

Trump Says He’s Blocking Increased Post Office Funding to Stop Universal Mail-In Voting Posted: 13 Aug 2020 09:28 AM PDT President Trump said Thursday that one of the sticking points holding up a congressional deal for another round of coronavirus relief is funding for the Post Office, which he said Democrats want in order to bolster universal mail-in voting."They want $3.5 billion dollars for something that will turn out to be fraudulent, election money basically … the mail-in votes, okay, universal mail-in ballots," Trump said on Fox Business Thursday morning.Democratic lawmakers also want $25 billion in funding for the Post Office, Trump said."Now, they need that money in order to have the Post Office work so it can take all of these millions and millions of ballots," the president continued. "Those are just two items, but if they don't get those two items, that means you can't have universal mail-in voting, because they're not equipped to have it."Asked whether the Post Office funding is the issue holding up a congressional deal on coronavirus relief, Trump responded, "No, that's only one aspect of it."Democrats have pushed to make mail-in voting universally available to protect voters from possible exposure to the coronavirus at polling places. Republicans meanwhile have cautioned that large numbers of voters using absentee ballots could result in ballots being lost in the mail, sent to those who have died, or sent to voters who no longer live at a particular address. An additional concern is the amount of time it would take to count all the mail-in ballots."The Post Office is going to have to go to town to get these ridiculous ballots in," Trump said. "You know, there's nothing wrong with getting out and voting. You get out and vote. They voted during World War I and World War II."Trump also said states should require voters to produce identification before they can cast their vote, "because the Democrats scam the system." Democrats in Congress are fighting voter ID laws "tooth-and-nail because they cheat," he said.Despite warning about widespread voting by absentee ballot as a potential breeding ground for election fraud, Trump last week encouraged Florida residents to vote by mail, assuring that the state's election system is "safe and secure."Meanwhile, the Trump administration has mounted a slew of legal challenges against attempts by Democrats to expand voting by mail, including suing Nevada over its plan to send ballots to all active voters."It's being challenged at many different levels. We have many different lawsuits out there," Trump said. "This will be the greatest fraud in history." |

Mexico launches corruption investigation into former president Posted: 12 Aug 2020 09:33 AM PDT Prosecutors in Mexico have opened an investigation into former president Enrique Peña Nieto, who is accused of taking bribes in one of Latin America's largest-ever corruption scandals. Emilio Lozoya, the former head of the state energy firm Pemex, accused Mr Peña Nieto on Tuesday of ordering him to funnel more than $4m (£2.5m) in bribes from Brazil's construction giant Odebrecht into the 2012 presidential election campaign. In a second allegation, Mr Lozoya said that once in power Mr Peña Nieto used a similar amount to bribe lawmakers to ensure the passage of a crucial energy reform bill through parliament. Mr Lozoya, who led Pemex from 2012 to 2016 and was a close aide to Mr Peña Nieto, has been charged with money laundering, bribery and racketeering in two cases. He has denied wrongdoing, as has Mr Peña Nieto. His offer of evidence allegedly involving Mr Peña Nieto is part of a negotiation to secure a plea bargain, according to reports. Mr Lozoya's allegations are part of the highest-profile corruption case since 1983, when another former Pemex chief was jailed for corruption. If Mr Peña Nieto were indicted, he would be the first president to face corruption charges in Mexico's modern history. Last year, a witness testifying at a US trial of Mexico's drug cartel kingpin Joaquín "El Chapo" Guzmán said Mr Peña Nieto had accepted a $100m (£77m) bribe from the mobster. The ex-president also made no comments on that allegation, but he has previously rejected allegations of corruption. Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, Mexico's President, on Wednesday said Mr Peña Nieto should have to testify and called on Mr Lozoya to come forward with evidence to back his accusations. The case likely comes as a welcome distraction for Mr Obrador, whose country is suffering from one of the world's worst outbreaks of the coronavirus. He claimed on Wednesday that the coronavirus pandemic is losing force in Mexico, even as 6,686 new confirmed coronavirus cases and 926 additional fatalities were reported the night before. With 53,929 total deaths, Mexico has the third highest coronavirus death toll in the world. |

Georgia governor to drop lawsuit over Atlanta mask mandate Posted: 13 Aug 2020 11:45 AM PDT Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp on Thursday said he's dropping a lawsuit against the city of Atlanta in a dispute over the city's requirement to wear masks in public and other restrictions related to the coronavirus pandemic. Kemp had sued Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms and the City Council to block them from implementing restrictions at the local level, even as case counts and hospitalizations in the state soared. The Republican governor argued that local governments can't impose measures that are more or less restrictive than those in his statewide executive orders, which have strongly urged people to wear masks but not required them. |
Ghislaine Maxwell fails to obtain delay in unsealing documents Posted: 12 Aug 2020 03:02 PM PDT A U.S. judge on Wednesday rejected Ghislaine Maxwell's request for a three-week delay in the unsealing of additional documents related to her dealings with the late financier Jeffrey Epstein. Lawyers for the British socialite, who faces criminal charges she aided Epstein's sexual abuses, had on Monday said "critical new information" had surfaced that could affect Maxwell's ability to obtain a fair trial, justifying the delay. Lawyers for Maxwell did not immediately respond to requests for comment. |
