Posted: 15 Oct 2020 09:18 AM PDT Republican leaders of the Senate Judiciary Committee on Thursday called on the CEOs of Facebook and Twitter to testify before the committee and said they were prepared to issue subpoenas to compel testimony regarding their decisions to censor negative stories about Democrats.Senators Ted Cruz (R., Texas), Lindsey Graham (R., S.C.) and Josh Hawley (R., Mo.) announced that the Committee would vote on a subpoena on Tuesday for Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey to testify on Friday, October 23, according to Fox News."This is election interference and we're 19 days out from an election," Cruz said. "It has no precedent in the history of democracy. The Senate Judiciary Committee wants to know what the hell is going on."Hawley called on the committee to also subpoena Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg. The Committee's concern comes after news that both social media platforms had worked to suppress a New York Post report based on emails which suggest the younger Biden may have made an introduction between his father, then- Vice President Joe Biden, and a Ukranian adviser to Burisma Holdings in 2015. The authenticity of the emails has not been confirmed. |

Posted: 16 Oct 2020 05:04 AM PDT White South African farmers and rival Black protesters hurled abuse and threats at each other on Friday ahead of a court hearing in a murder case that has exposed still simmering racial tensions 26 years after the end of apartheid. The killing of Brendan Horner, a white man whose body was found tied to a pole at his farm in Free State province, sparked riots at the start of this month, and prompted President Cyril Ramaphosa to make a statement urging South Africans to "resist attempts... to mobilise communities along racial lines". The farmers, who accuse the government of failing to protect them from violent crime, arrived in pick-up trucks ahead of the court hearing in the central town of Senekal for Horner's two suspected killers. The farmers mostly wore khaki shirts and shorts, a few wore military outfits, and at least one was armed. A group on motorbikes sporting long beards drove through Senekal, a trading town surrounded by dry, hilly countryside, some waving flags with crosses on. "We are getting tired now of all the farm murders," said Geoffrey Marais, 30, a livestock trader from Delmas, where a woman was strangled to death two weeks ago. "Enough is enough. They (the government) must start to prioritise these crimes." |

U.S. gun sales soar amid pandemic, social unrest, election fears Posted: 15 Oct 2020 04:03 AM PDT Like legions of other first-time buyers who are contributing to record sales for the U.S. gun industry this year, Garland's decision to take up arms is driven in part by disturbing news about the coronavirus pandemic, social unrest over police killings of Black people and a potentially contested election that many fear could spark violence. Surges in U.S. firearm sales have in recent decades been predictably driven by events sparking fears of impending gun-control legislation, such as the election of a Democratic president or a spate of mass shootings, federal gun background check data show. Industry experts and academics who study gun ownership say such surges came largely among the gun-industry's core base of white, male and politically conservative customers who often already owned one or multiple guns. |
Teacher beheaded in Paris suburb after showing cartoons of Prophet Mohammed to class Posted: 16 Oct 2020 09:42 AM PDT A history teacher who showed his pupils cartoons of the Prophet Mohammed in class was beheaded near his school in a Paris suburb on Friday by a suspected Islamist terrorist who shouted "Allahu Akbar", police said. Alerted by local residents, police confronted and shot dead a man armed with a kitchen knife and an air gun who refused to drop his weapons and surrender, and threatened them. Minutes later, officers found the body of the male teacher. A bomb disposal unit was called in to check whether the presumed assailant was wearing a suicide vest or belt. Witnesses told police they heard the assailant shouting "Allahu Akbar" ['God is the greatest' in Arabic], police sources said. The teacher had received death threats after giving a class on freedom of expression, during which he showed pupils the controversial cartoons, a police source said. The presumed killer was reported to be an 18-year-old Chechen, the sources said. |

Kurdish-led authorities free hundreds of Islamic State militants jailed in northern Syria Posted: 16 Oct 2020 03:57 AM PDT Kurdish-led authorities in northeast Syria have freed hundreds of imprisoned Islamic State militants, saying they have "no blood on their hands" and have repented joining the terrorist group. A first batch of 631 Syrian IS prisoners was released on Thursday, while 253 had their sentences halved, according to Syrian Democratic Council co-chair Amina Omar. The released were Syrian nationals accused of low-level membership in IS who were not thought to have been commanders or involved in attacks. "This includes those convicted of terror charges whose hands are not stained with the blood of Syrians," Ms Omar said at a press conference in the northeast city of Qamishli. Following the territorial defeat of IS last March, the western-backed Syrian Democratic Forces were left holding some 19,000 ISIS-affiliated men and boys in detention in some two dozen detention facilities spread across northeast Syria. |

North Dakota Mom’s Disappearance May Be Related to Love Triangle, Family Says Posted: 16 Oct 2020 12:50 PM PDT North Dakota authorities are still searching for a 47-year-old mother who went missing nearly two weeks ago after leaving a small gathering on foot—and family members believe her disappearance may be tied to a love triangle.Anne Fitzsimonds, 47, walked away from the party at a farmstead in rural Petersburg—at least 26 miles away from her Inkster home—around 1:30 a.m on Oct. 4. She was wearing only a leather jacket, jeans, and cowboy boots, despite the frigid temperature, which dipped as low as 29 degrees."There was no reason for her to leave. Why she left nobody seems to be able to tell us," her older brother, George Niece, told the Grand Forks Herald, adding that the search over vast rural North Dakota has been "absolutely daunting." "Scary, so scary. On one hand, you want to find her, but on the other hand, you don't want to find her; you just want her home."Niece believes his sister's disappearance may be connected to her longtime battle with drug addiction and her recent infidelity in her 30-year marriage."In this case, there was a love triangle, I think, and I think there is drugs; that's going to be money. It doesn't look good," Niece told the Herald.Missing Tennessee Toddler Evelyn Boswell's Mom Changed Story 'Every Single Time': SheriffSince the news of his sister's disappearance, Niece has temporarily left his job in the Twin Cities to assist the Nelson County Sheriff's Department with their search—and is offering a $5,000 reward for helpful information related to the case. But the sheriff's department says that, at this point, their investigation is still considered a "missing persons" case. The sheriff's office added there have been two unconfirmed sightings of Fitzsimonds since Oct. 4: one at a gas station on Highway 2 in Michigan, North Dakota, and another two days later in Cando, about an hour away.Nelson County Sheriff Keith Olson told the Herald that while the mother-of-two had a habit of going away "for weeks at a time" she usually contacted someone. People at the party, which may have involved drugs, have also given authorities conflicting stories about the night, he added. On Thursday, several investigators conducted a massive search on the Petersburg farmstead, assisted by five cadaver dogs and Valley Water Rescue. Harsh winds, however, impeded their search, and investigators were unable to locate any evidence on the property."Police tracking and cadaver dogs searched the area around where Anne disappeared and nothing was found," Niece wrote on Facebook Thursday evening. "Still hoping that Anne...will be found soon."'Vanished Into Thin Air': Florida Mom Disappears After Withdrawing $20 From ATMAuthorities have finally tracked down Fitzsimonds' truck, which her new boyfriend had been reportedly using over the last week. The Grand Forks Herald also reports the boyfriend, referred to as "Brad" in Niece's Facebook posts, drove the white pick-up truck home the night the 47-year-old disappeared. The sheriff's department said investigators had trouble locating the vehicle because there were multiple names on its title—including the owner of the farmstead, who voluntarily gave up the car on Thursday evening."Yesterday the pickup that Anne bought from Connie that was titled as an 'OR' with both their names was impounded by the police," Niece wrote in a Friday Facebook post. "That's more than a week after she disappeared and both Brad, her fling, and Connie have been using it over the last week. This truck was back at the house Anne was last seen at, although apparently in Edinburg the night she disappeared."Niece, who described his little sister as a loving person, is also making sure his niece and nephew are taken care of during the "long road ahead when their Mom returns," he said on Facebook. In a GoFundMe page Niece set up for the children, he revealed they "were not regularly getting dental, medical, or schooling" and said the family's home is in need of some repairs."As we've searched for Anne and helped to refurbish the family home for the children, we realized that neither Valerie or John have the basics that many of us take for granted," the GoFundMe states. "The kids are amazing and literally anything given help them to grow into strong adults who can live and work in our Eastern North Dakota community."Read more at The Daily Beast.Got a tip? Prehistoric footprints of woman carrying toddler while dodging sabre-toothed cats unearthed Posted: 16 Oct 2020 05:20 AM PDT Prehistoric footprints of a woman carrying a toddler while dodging sabre-toothed cats and giant sloths are the longest set of fossilised human prints ever found, scientists have said. The prints, which stretch for almost a mile and were discovered in the White Sands National Park in New Mexico, USA, date back 13,000 years. Prior to their discovery, the longest track, located in Northern Tanzania, was only around 200 metres long, said Professor Matthew Bennett, of the University of Bournemouth. |

Dutch king cuts short vacation in Greece after criticism Posted: 16 Oct 2020 12:26 PM PDT The Netherlands' King Willem-Alexander and his wife cut short a vacation to Greece on Friday after coming under criticism for travelling during the coronavirus pandemic. "We see the reactions by people to reports in the media," Willem-Alexander and his wife Queen Maxima said in a statement published by the Royal House late on Friday. "This is unwise and incomprehensible," the ANP news agency quoted lawmaker Joost Sneller of the D-66 party, one of the coalition partners in Prime Minister Mark Rutte's governing coalition, as saying of the King's vacation. |

Lockdown puppies being increasingly abandoned by owners Posted: 15 Oct 2020 08:25 AM PDT Lockdown puppies are being increasingly abandoned by their owners, the RSPCA has warned, as its centres begin to be flooded with cats and dogs. There was a huge surge in demand for puppies over lockdown as people on furlough and working from home wanted companionship. For some, it was the perfect opportunity to train a young dog. However, as people return to work they have found they no longer have time for their pooch, and have been abandoning their pets at animal welfare charities. Many local centres have noticed an uptick in abandoned pets. Oaktree Animals' Charity, near Carlisle, has taken in a 120 dogs and cats over the last three months. The charity revealed 45,181 dog incidents have been dealt with this year (up to 29 September). Dogs Trust estimates we could see up to 40,000 more stray or abandoned dogs in need of help, especially if – as economists indicate - we see a financial crisis on par or worse than the crash of 2008, which saw a 25.6% increase in stray and abandoned dogs the year after. H This raises concerns among RSPCA experts that an impending dog welfare crisis could be on the horizon in 2021 as families return to normal life and may no longer be able to take care of the puppy they bought during lockdown. Coupled with a fear that the end of furlough and the deepening recession will hit families hard and some may no longer be able to afford their pets, this could put pressure on the already-stretched resources of rescue centres. RSPCA chief executive Chris Sherwood said: "We are all used to being able to buy whatever we want when we want it but we're urging people to thoroughly do their research before committing to getting any dog and to make sure they don't get caught out by people acting illegally or irresponsibly. We have lots of dogs waiting for their forever homes so please do consider getting a rescue dog. RSPCA dog welfare expert Dr Samantha Gaines said: "We're worried that as people return to their normal lives post-lockdown and people are hit by recession we could see more dogs coming into our care or being abandoned. The message here is simple: do lots of research to help find the right pet for your family and don't impulse buy. "Dogs can be sensitive to changes to their routine and we'd urge anyone who is concerned about their pets' behaviour to speak to their vet or to a clinical animal behaviourist for help." |
