Death of woman in Texas jail consistent with suicide: prosecutor Posted: 23 Jul 2015 03:45 PM PDT Evidence from an autopsy on Sandra Bland, the black woman found hanging dead in a Texas jail days after a traffic stop, supports the medical examiner's initial ruling of suicide, a county prosecutor told reporters on Thursday. The preliminary results also found high levels of marijuana in Bland's system, although officials are seeking additional tests to confirm when and how much she might have smoked or swallowed, Waller County Assistant District Attorney Warren Diepraam said. |
Jurors advance death penalty case against Colorado movie gunman Posted: 23 Jul 2015 03:34 PM PDT Jurors in the Colorado movie massacre trial found on Thursday the prosecution had proved aggravating factors which, the state has argued, make the 2012 rampage so heinous that gunman James Holmes deserves to be put to death. After deliberating since Wednesday, the panel of nine women and three men said prosecutors proved at least one such factor connected with the rampage in which Holmes killed 12 and wounded 70 at a midnight premiere of a Batman film in a Denver suburb. Defense lawyer Rebekka Higgs told jurors that during the mitigation phase they will hear all about Holmes' life, because they are now responsible for it. |
Exclusive: Military school knew of doctor's macabre ways for decades Posted: 23 Jul 2015 02:03 PM PDT By John Shiffman WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The president of the U.S. military's medical college said he took swift action after learning in 2013 that John Henry Hagmann, a former Army doctor teaching there, was injecting students with hypnotic drugs, inducing shock by withdrawing their blood, and performing rectal exams in class. Hagmann was escorted off the Uniformed Services University campus in Maryland, and the college quickly offered students blood tests to determine if they had been exposed to any diseases, school President Charles Rice said. The college also launched an internal investigation into Hagmann's conduct, and it forwarded information to law enforcement authorities and the Virginia Board of Medicine, which revoked Hagmann's license last month. |
Bill Clinton says Hillary once told him she'd never run for office Posted: 23 Jul 2015 08:26 AM PDT When Bill Clinton first proposed to Hillary, he told her, "I want you to marry me, but you shouldn't it." The future president told the future first lady-turned-senator-turned-secretary of state-turned-presidential candidate he wanted her to get into politics instead. "Oh my God," Hillary responded. "I'll never run for office. I'm too aggressive, and nobody will ever vote for me." |
