Car slams into crowd at Oklahoma parade; four killed, dozens injured Posted: 24 Oct 2015 04:34 PM PDT By Lenzy Krehbiel-Burton STILLWATER, Okla. (Reuters) - A car with a suspected drunk driver at the wheel barreled into crowds watching a homecoming parade at Oklahoma State University on Saturday, killing four people and injuring more than 40 others, authorities said. Witnesses told of bodies being flung dozens of feet into the air as the gray Hyundai Elantra plowed into the throng at the intersection of Main Street and Hall of Fame Avenue in Stillwater, some 80 miles (130 km) northeast of Oklahoma City, at the end of the parade. "At first we thought it was part of the show," Konda Walker, a 1991 graduate of OSU, told the local Stillwater News Press. |
Colorado movie gunman James Holmes assaulted by fellow prisoner Posted: 23 Oct 2015 11:06 PM PDT Convicted mass killer James Holmes, who is serving multiple life sentences for gunning down a dozen people at a movie theater in 2012, was assaulted by another inmate at a high-security Colorado prison, a corrections official said on Friday. Holmes was not injured when he was attacked by 27-year-old Mark C. Daniels at the Colorado State Penitentiary in Canon City, said Adrienne Jacobson, spokeswoman for the Colorado Department of Corrections. Daniels lunged at Holmes and "took some swings" at him as the two prisoners were being escorted by guards down a hallway inside the lockup on Oct. 8, she said. |
Judge dismisses Wikimedia lawsuit over NSA surveillance - report Posted: 24 Oct 2015 11:59 AM PDT A federal judge has dismissed a lawsuit by Wikimedia and other groups challenging one of the U.S. National Security Agency's mass surveillance programs, the Baltimore Sun reported. The lawsuit filed in federal court in Maryland, where the spy agency is based, said the NSA is violating U.S. constitutional protections and the law by tapping into high-capacity cables, switches and routers that move Internet traffic through the United States. The case is one of a number of challenges made by privacy advocates against U.S. spying programs since 2013, when documents leaked by former NSA contractor Edward Snowden revealed the long reach of secret government surveillance. |
