Posted: 29 May 2017 05:43 AM PDT Pentagon chief James Mattis has said that the US is "accelerating the tempo" of the fight against Isis, and that civilian deaths should be anticipated as a "fact of life". While US forces operating in Syria and Iraq do "do everything humanly possible" to prevent the loss of innocent life, "Civilian casualties are a fact of life in this sort of situation," General Mattis told CBS' Face the Nation on Sunday. The interview comes after new figures from war monitor the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights found that the last four-week period was the deadliest for Syrian civilians on record since the US-led coalition bombing campaign began in 2014. |

Bodies of civilians dumped near Philippines city besieged by Islamists Posted: 28 May 2017 02:38 AM PDT By Tom Allard MARAWI CITY, Philippines (Reuters) - Bodies of what appeared to be executed civilians were found in a ravine outside a besieged Philippine city on Sunday as a six-day occupation by Islamist rebels fending off a military onslaught took a more sinister turn. The eight dead, most of them shot in the head and some with hands tied behind their backs, were laborers who were stopped by Islamic State-linked militants on the outskirts of Marawi City while trying to flee clashes, according to police. The discovery confirms days of speculation that Maute rebels had killed civilians during a takeover of Marawi, that the military believes is aimed at winning the Maute recognition from the Islamic State as a Southeast Asian affiliate. |

Orangutan climbs out of enclosure while rescuing her baby Posted: 28 May 2017 08:20 PM PDT We know that orangutans are great climbers — in fact, it seems like they could just hop out of their enclosure, if they wanted to. It turns out that Sekara, an orangutan at the Perth Zoo, did just that when her 5-year-old baby Sungai lost grip on some equipment and fell into a garden bed on Sunday, according to WA Today. SEE ALSO: Rejected penguin has found new outlook on life with cutout of anime character Visitors were evacuated from the area for safety, but zoo staff were quick to respond to the incident. "She seemed really calm, just confused on where to go next. Everyone around was really calm and giving her space as well. The whole incident was probably only 30-40 seconds before staff arrived," Jess McConnell, a witness, told the news outlet. Perth Zoo spokesperson Danielle Henry told the news outlet that the incident was "over within 15 minutes," and Sekara remained calm and returned to keepers afterward. "Sekara is an excellent mum and a bit of a helicopter parent, and the only way to get to him was to pop onto the visitor board. She retrieved him and returned to the enclosure on her own," Henry said. "Keepers were calling to her, and she has a very good relationship with them." The zoo will also conduct a review of the incident. It's not the first time an orangutan has escaped the zoo's enclosure. A couple of years ago, a 5-year-old orangutan named Teliti somehow got out and had a wander along a boardwalk. Orangutang out at Perth zoo! Came down to play with my son. On Saturday, following fractious G7 and Nato meetings, Ms Merkel suggested the days when Germany could rely on its allies were "over to a certain extent". |

Pressure on S.Africa's Zuma as ANC leadership meets Posted: 28 May 2017 06:36 AM PDT South Africa's President Jacob Zuma faced further opposition at a meeting of his party's top leadership Sunday but managed to sidestep a no-confidence vote after a turbulent three-day gathering. The meeting in Pretoria comes as Zuma faces growing criticism within the ruling African National Congress, which sharpened after a March cabinet reshuffle when he sacked respected finance minister Pravin Gordhan. Speaking to local media on Saturday, ANC secretary general Gwede Mantashe said the leadership was aware of reports that there was going to be blood on the floor. |
Two men stabbed to death on Oregon train trying to stop anti-Muslim rant Posted: 27 May 2017 05:42 PM PDT A man fatally stabbed two passengers aboard a Portland, Oregon, commuter train after they tried to stop him from harassing two young women who appeared to be Muslim, police said on Saturday. Police identified the assailant, who was arrested soon after the Friday afternoon attack, as Jeremy Joseph Christian of Portland, a 35-year-old convicted felon. A senior researcher with the Southern Poverty Law Center, in a blog post, said Christian's Facebook page showed he held "some racist and other extremist beliefs." The attack unfolded hours before the start of Ramadan, Islam's holy month, when most of the world's 1.6 billion Muslims observe a daily religious fast. |
A sampling of VA drug-theft prosecutions Posted: 29 May 2017 11:11 AM PDT Government data obtained by The Associated Press show more cases of opioid drug theft or missing prescriptions at Veterans Affairs health facilities despite new prevention efforts. The VA inspector general's office opened 36 new criminal investigations into possible drug theft from Oct. 1 to May 19. Doctors, nurses or pharmacy staff in the VA's network of more than 160 medical centers and 1,000 clinics are suspected of siphoning away controlled substances for their own use or street sale — sometimes to the harm of patients. |
A dazzling aurora borealis light show captivates the internet Posted: 28 May 2017 06:29 AM PDT Saturday evening stargazers were treated to one of the trippiest natural phenomenons Earth has to offer: a naked eye-visible aurora borealis. The "northern lights," as they are often called, originate with our sun. Solar storms that occur there emit streams of charged particles which help to trigger the unusual light show once they reach Earth. SEE ALSO: The mystery of panda's fur color is finally solved The magnetic fields emanating from our north and south poles pull the charged particles down into our upper (and sometimes lower) atmosphere, where some of them collide with the neutral particles that reside there. The result of this collision is a beautiful glowing sky, though it's usually visible only at higher latitudes. In the Northern Hemisphere it's an "aurora borealis" and in the Southern Hemisphere it's an "aurora australis." Saturday evening's aurora borealis extended further south than is normal for these events, which meant it was visible in the northern U.S., Canada, and parts of Europe. It was the result of the sun spitting out a large burst of plasma on May 23, an event referred to as a Coronal Mass Ejection (CME). The internet expressed its thanks for the cosmic light show in the only way it knows how: social media shares enhanced by stunning photography. WOW! Former CIA director criticises Jared Kushner alleged over back channel links to Russia Posted: 28 May 2017 12:20 AM PDT Jared Kushner's alleged back channel links to Russia would have been considered spying if they had been set up by an intelligence officer, George W Bush's former CIA director has said. Mr McLaughlan said, providing the allegations were true: "I don't want to overstate because obviously there is a lot we don't know. Mr Kushner, Donald Trump's son-in-law and a top White House adviser, reportedly proposed a secret back channel between the Kremiln and the Trump transition team during a meeting with the Russian ambassador to the US in December. |
Somali Islamist insurgents stone man to death for adultery Posted: 28 May 2017 12:09 PM PDT By Feisal Omar MOGADISHU (Reuters) - Somali Islamist insurgents stoned a man to death on Sunday as punishment for alleged adultery, they said, a reminder that the militia is still strong enough to carry out public executions despite losing its grip on most towns and cities. Hundreds of witnesses watched the death of 44-year-old Dayow Mohamed Hassan in Ramo Adey village in the south-central Bay region, the regional governor representing the al Qaeda-linked insurgency said. Moalim Geedow told Reuters that Hassan was buried neck-deep in a hole then pelted with stones. |
