Well before Guzman's hearing began, reporters had already filled the courtroom's press box and much of the overflow room across the hall, where a live feed of the proceedings played on two TVs and a large projector screen. |

'No chance' for trapped Iran miners Posted: 05 May 2017 09:13 AM PDT Iranian officials said Friday there was "no chance" of saving nine coal miners trapped for the past two days after a tunnel collapse that has already claimed at least 26 lives. Toxic gases have filled much of the two-kilometre (mile) Zemestan Yort mine in northern Iran, and rescue workers face a painstaking effort to clear the fragile passage in which the remaining workers were trapped after a huge explosion. "There is no chance of workers being alive in the mine," said Deputy Interior Minister Esmail Nadjar, quoted by the ILNA news agency. |

A look at the House Republican health care bill Posted: 05 May 2017 01:14 AM PDT WASHINGTON (AP) — House Republicans have passed legislation to roll back much of former President Barack Obama's health care law. The legislation would rework subsidies for private insurance, limit federal spending on Medicaid for low-income people and cut taxes on upper-income individuals used to finance Obama's overhaul. |
Macron stretches lead in last throes of French presidential campaign Posted: 05 May 2017 12:16 PM PDT By Mathieu Rosemain and Andrew Callus PARIS (Reuters) - Centrist French presidential candidate Emmanuel Macron extended his lead in the polls over his far-right rival Marine Le Pen on Friday, the final day of campaigning in a tumultuous election race that has turned the country's politics upside down. Sunday's election is seen as the most important in France for decades, with two diametrically opposed views of Europe and France's place in the world at stake. The National Front's Le Pen would close borders and quit the euro currency, while independent Macron, who has never held elected office, wants closer European cooperation and an open economy. |

The narrow-body C919 jet -- white with green and blue stripes -- soared over Pudong international airport in the commercial hub Shanghai as a crowd of thousands cheered. Built by state-owned aerospace manufacturer Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China (COMAC), the plane represents nearly a decade of effort in a government-mandated drive to reduce dependence on European consortium Airbus and US aerospace giant Boeing. |

Iran army criticises Rouhani's missile comments Posted: 06 May 2017 04:12 AM PDT Iran's armed forces warned President Hassan Rouhani against discussing the country's defence programme after he criticised the anti-Israel slogans written on the side of ballistic missiles, local media reported on Saturday. During an election debate on Friday, Rouhani took the rare step of criticising the elite Revolutionary Guards for the provocative messages they wrote on ballistic missiles before testing them. "We saw how they wrote slogans on missiles and showed underground (missile) cities to disrupt the JCPOA (nuclear deal)," he said during the debate, which comes ahead of the May 19 election. |

Another iPhone supplier hit by Apple’s supply changes Posted: 06 May 2017 11:31 AM PDT The iPhone 8 is good news for various component suppliers who live and die by Apple's orders. The device is expected to pack a bunch of new features that require specialized hardware — that's why the phone is rumored to see launch delays of up to two months. But it appears that Apple is also shopping for other suppliers when it comes to smartphone components we're used to seeing in today's phone. And that means one more Apple suppliers will feel the pain of losing iPhone orders. According to Bloomberg, Bosch will manufacture some of the motion sensors that go into the iPhone, which means InvenSense will take a hit in the process. InvenSense joins a growing list of suppliers whose revenue can be seriously affected by Apple's business. Imagination announced that Apple will drop its GPU designs for the iPhone within two years. A report recently said Apple is developing its own battery management chip and dumping Dialog in the process. Bosch may supply as much as half of the motion sensor Apple needs for the iPhone 8 and iPhone 7s this year, with the other half left to InvenSense, which was the sole manufacturer of such parts for the iPhone 6s and iPhone 7. Bosch also makes the barometric pressures for the iPhone. The motion sensors include gyroscopes and accelerometers and are critical for any iPhone, including the iPhone. They let the iPhone tell how the user is interacting with the device and apps, how the phone is held, and monitor health-related activity. Apple is known for seeking more than one supplier for the same component to make sure it has enough parts to go around and to get better deals. |

Two students at the University of Kentucky are facing burglary charges after crawling through campus ceiling ducts to steal a statistics exam from their professor's office. According to the Lexington Herald-Leader, 21-year-old junior Henry Lynch II dropped into the room through the ceiling, let in his friend Troy through the door, then started to rummage around for the test. Posted: 05 May 2017 02:39 PM PDT President Donald Trump's hard-fought healthcare victory could backfire, as House Republicans that voted to repeal Obamacare are now vulnerable to backlash from their constituents. The Republicans' 217-213 passage of the American Health Care Act (AHCA) hurts the re-election chances of several representatives who supported the bill, according to the Cook Political Report. The non-partisan election analyst changed its forecast in 20 House districts, deeming each of them more likely than before to be won by a Democrat. |

The jet is a symbol of China's ambitions to muscle into a global jet market estimated to be worth $2 trillion over the next two decades, as well as of Beijing's broader "Made in China 2025" plan to spur home-made products, from medicines to robots. This is a moment we have waited to see for a very long time," Wang Mingfeng, 42, who witnessed the maiden flight at the Shanghai airport, told Reuters. |

'He's an embarrassment': hostile welcome for Trump on return to New York Posted: 04 May 2017 08:18 PM PDT Donald Trump returned to New York on Thursday night for the first time since his inauguration, yet the closest he could get to his home in Trump Tower was 10 blocks away as the city that made his fortune greeted him with noisy protest. The president bypassed his Fifth Avenue penthouse, where the first lady, Melania, and his youngest son, Barron, still live, bound for the USS Intrepid, a decommissioned aircraft carrier on the Hudson river, where he attended a gala to mark the 75th anniversary of a major second world war naval battle. Trump returned to New York buoyed by what he called the "unbelievable victory" earlier in the day in the House of Representatives of the bill to dismantle Barack Obama's Affordable Care Act. |

Hamas elects former deputy Haniyeh as new political chief Posted: 06 May 2017 09:33 AM PDT By Nidal al-Mughrabi GAZA (Reuters) - The Palestinian movement Hamas on Saturday elected Ismail Haniyeh to head its political office, a leadership change that comes as the Islamist group looks to reconcile with Palestinian rivals. Haniyeh, a former deputy chief, will replace Qatar-based veteran Khaled Meshaal, who steps down at the end of his term limit just as Hamas appeared to have softened its stance toward Israel in a new policy document last week. The group maintains a sizeable armed wing in the Gaza Strip since seizing the coastal territory in 2007 from the rival Fatah party, which is based in the West Bank, and has fought three wars with Israel.Israeli officials had no immediate comment on the election. |
