Qatar responds to demands after deadline extended Posted: 03 Jul 2017 03:31 PM PDT Qatar on Monday responded to a list of demands from Saudi Arabia and its allies after they agreed to give a defiant Doha another 48 hours to address their grievances. Details of the response were not immediately available, but a Gulf official told AFP that Qatari Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani had delivered it during a short visit to Kuwait, which is acting as a mediator in the crisis. Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Egypt had announced in the early hours of Monday they were pushing back a deadline for Qatar to agree to a list of 13 demands they issued on June 22. |

Russian-sponsored talks are planned in Astana on Tuesday. |

Why has Iran's investment gold rush been so slow to emerge? Posted: 03 Jul 2017 06:33 AM PDT When Iran signed its landmark deal with world powers in 2015, curbing its nuclear programme in exchange for sanctions relief, many expected an investment gold rush. French car firm PSA was quick off the block, signing a 400-million-euro deal in June 2016 to build Peugeot vehicles with Iranian carmaker Khodro, and a 300-million-euro agreement in October to build Citroens with Iran's SAIPA. Hotel group Accor says it is working on 10 to 15 projects in Iran, hoping to capitalise on the tourism boom since the nuclear deal. |
Woman 'beaten to death by ex-boyfriend' had predicted it would happen on Facebook Posted: 04 Jul 2017 06:40 AM PDT A woman from Las Vegas who died of brain injuries after being beaten into a coma by her ex-boyfriend predicted her own death on social media. Stella Martinez, 39, was attacked and choked on the ground in her back yard on 3 June by 41-year-old Christopher Wood, who had broken into her home, according to police. Mr Wood was arrested on attempted murder, attempted burglary and domestic battery by strangulation charges that are expected to be upgraded before a 14 July preliminary hearing of evidence against him. |

Health vlogger eats poisonous plant on livestream, and you’ll totally believe what happens next Posted: 03 Jul 2017 05:00 PM PDT In the fascinating world of second-tier YouTube health vlogging, chemicals bad and plants good. Only, that doesn't work so well when the plant in question is Agave Americana, a Mexico-dwelling poisonous plant that can easily kill a human.
A Chinese vlogger known as "Zhang" thought that eating a giant aloe vera leaf on camera would be her key to success. She fired up a livestream with two large leaves, both of which looked close to aloe vera, which is known for its medicinal properties (although eating the plant raw still isn't a good idea). Unfortunately, Zhang had two leaves from Agave Americana, which looks similar but is far more deadly. She takes one bite, and immediately remarks how bitter and awful it takes. She abandoned the livestream almost immediately and went to hospital. Later, she said that her mouth was "numb" and her throat was "on fire." Doctors treated her for severe rashes and blisters and pumped her stomach to remove any trace of the plant. There's a few things we can take away from this: livestreaming is bad, eating strange plants you found on the internet is a terrible idea, and when alternative medicine screws up, at least the hospital will still be there to save you. |

26-year-old man charged with raping family friends' one-year-old baby Posted: 04 Jul 2017 06:10 AM PDT Jayson Newlun, a 26-year-old family friend who was babysitting for friends, was caught inappropriately touching the child while pleasuring himself after being left alone with the baby for just 10 to 15 minutes, according to local media. Court documents show that the mother and father had left Mr Newlun alone with their daughter while they went to the store. Once they returned, the mother noticed that Mr Newlun wasn't on the couch where he had been when they left, and that her infant daughter's bedroom door was open. |
Qatar deadline extended by 48 hours: Saudi Posted: 02 Jul 2017 05:51 PM PDT Saudi Arabia and its allies said early Monday they had decided to extend by 48 hours the deadline for Qatar to accept their list of demands to lift a de facto blockade. With the deadline expiring at midnight Sunday, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Egypt agreed to give Doha an extension to respond positively to their demands. The Kuwaiti government had requested the extension following Qatar's announcement that it was due to hand over its response to the emir, Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmad Al-Sabah, on Monday. |

Trump apparently thinks he can make a 'sneak' UK visit, British protesters beg to differ Posted: 03 Jul 2017 03:44 AM PDT Trump called, Britain responded. Reports that the U.S. president is planning a "snap visit" to the UK in the next two weeks have protesters smelling blood and readying on social media for all-out demonstrations. SEE ALSO: J.K. Rowling and Stephen King join forces to troll Donald Trump If you recall, Trump postponed his visit, which was due to take place over the summer, over fears that it could be disrupted by mass street protests. After Prime Minister Theresa May invited him for a visit when he was just seven days into office, activists formed the Stop Trump coalition and pledged the largest demonstration in UK history. A petition calling for the UK government to block the U.S. president gathered more than 1 million signatures in less than 48 hours. In June, after the UK general elections, Trump told May he does not want to go forward with a planned state visit to the U.K. until the public supports him coming. For these reasons, Whitehall sources just claimed final confirmation to a Trump's visit to Turnberry — his golf resort In Scotland — and Downing Street would be given just 24 hours' notice "to minimise the risk of disruption." On Monday morning, a spokesman for May told Sky News the government was unaware of any plans for Trump to visit the UK in the next few weeks. But it's still safe to say, British people weren't impressed by these reports, and vehemently stressed their ability to swiftly organise a mass protest: Donald Trump is planning to sneak into Britain to avoid protests. China defends N.Korea efforts, after Trump outburst Posted: 04 Jul 2017 02:20 AM PDT China defended its "relentless efforts" to resolve the North Korea nuclear issue on Tuesday following a Twitter outburst from US President Donald Trump, as Pyongyang claimed to have tested an intercontinental ballistic missile. The US president has piled pressure on China to use its diplomatic and economic clout over North Korea, its Communist ally, to persuade Pyongyang to stop its nuclear and missile activities. |
3 Questions to Ask Before Taking Prescription Pain Meds Posted: 03 Jul 2017 03:00 AM PDT Over the last few decades, the prevalence of narcotic painkiller (also referred to as opioids) use in the United States has skyrocketed. This class of medications suppresses the body's perception of pain by blocking signals between the brain and the nervous system. In the past, usage of opioids for pain relief was mostly limited to short-term instances of severe pain, such as during the recovery period after surgery, a traumatic injury or an acute flare-up of an existing condition. |
US Secretary of State says 'Syria's fate is in Russian hands now' Posted: 03 Jul 2017 01:45 PM PDT The US Secretary of State has reportedly told the United Nations Secretary General that he thinks the fate of Syria and its leader is now up to Russia. Rex Tillerson held a private meeting with Antonio Guterres at the State Department when he said the US was limiting its mission to defeating terror group Isis, according to Foreign Policy. Citing three diplomatic sources with knowledge of the exchange, Mr Tillerson said that though the US is committed to the 2012 Geneva Process that stated it, Russia, and other western countries would put a transition government in place, the fate of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad would be in Russia's purview. |
