Teenager 'thrown out of school' for sitting during Pledge of Allegiance Posted: 08 Oct 2017 11:02 AM PDT A 17-year-old student is suing her high school district after she claims she was suspended for refusing to stand during the Pledge of Allegiance. India Landry, from Houston, said she was asked to leave Windfern High School after the incident, despite having sat during the Pledge to the flag hundreds of times before. The federal lawsuit alleges administrators at the school had been "recently whipped into a frenzy" by NFL players kneeling for the national anthem, according to the NY Daily News. |
Posted: 06 Oct 2017 07:01 PM PDT With important issues facing our country, the last thing the country needs is for the president to upend an agreement that is meeting U.S. security objectives. Diplomacy is supposed to be the vehicle by which U.S. leaders and officials secure American security and economic interests abroad. Trump's threat to decertify the Iran nuclear deal, whatever flaws may legitimately exist, threatens to cause severe damage to America's interests in the medium and long term. |
Sudan Airways seeks post-embargo Boeing, Airbus spare parts Posted: 08 Oct 2017 10:30 AM PDT Sudan's national carrier aims to revive its fleet by procuring new components from Boeing and Airbus after Washington lifted its 20-year-old trade embargo on Khartoum, a minister said Sunday. Sudan Airways, one of the oldest airlines in Africa, has 12 of its 14-strong fleet of aircraft grounded after failing to source spare parts from Boeing and Airbus because of the sanctions imposed in 1997. |

"Not just the nuclear deal as bad behavior, but the ballistic missile testing, destabilizing of the region, Number One state sponsor of terrorism, cyber attacks, illicit nuclear program," Sanders continued. |

Abe vows to tackle N. Korea threat ahead of Japan election Posted: 08 Oct 2017 03:22 AM PDT Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe vowed Sunday to impose "all possible pressure" on North Korea over its nuclear and missile programmes, promising to secure national security in a televised debate before a snap election. "Stepping up all possible pressure, we need to create a situation in which North Korea wants talks as it will change policy," Abe told the debate. Abe is seeking a fresh term as tensions with North Korea rise, with Pyongyang in recent months conducting what it described as a hydrogen bomb test and firing two missiles over Japan. |

A hurricane is no reason to end the party in New Orleans Posted: 07 Oct 2017 06:27 PM PDT A hurricane could not deter revelers Thursday on popular Bourbon Street in New Orleans' historic French Quarter. Just minutes before an evening curfew in the city known as "The Big Easy," happy people continued to saunter through the streets, dance in bars and dine in restaurants. Mayor Mitch Landrieu could barely contain his irritation, admonishing those who did not heed the curfew or evacuation orders for several low-lying areas. |
Ghana's capital rocked by huge gas explosion leaving several casualties Posted: 07 Oct 2017 07:38 PM PDT A tanker explosion at a gas-filling station in Ghana late on Saturday, followed by a secondary blast, has left a number of casualties in the Legon suburb in northwest Accra, authorities said. Ghana's deputy information minister Kojo Oppong-Nkrumah said the fire has been controlled and firefighters are now controlling the second explosion. "It is early days yet to give any figures" on the number injured or dead, he said, adding there were casualties. Ambulances had been deployed, and those people who sustained various degrees of injury have been sent to hospitals, he said. More than 200 police personnel were also deployed to help to cordon off the area of the explosion, making it difficult to access. The filling station is near a transport terminal and close to some hostels for the University of Ghana in Accra. It was like refugees moving away from a war-torn zone." Videos of the explosion posted on social media showed a blazing mushroom cloud. Legon is a suburb of the capital, and is also home to the main campus of the University of Ghana. Donald Trump Jr was responding to the report about the incident by US broadcaster ABC News, clicking the like button on their story about the incident. A large number of Twitter users but not ABC News had claimed it was a terrorist attack. |

Here Is the U.S. Military's New High-Speed Boat in Action Posted: 07 Oct 2017 06:46 AM PDT Back in July, U.S. Central Command tweeted a gnarly photo of Gen. Joseph Votel cruising aboard a Combatant Craft Assault boat, the stealthy multi-role watercraft designed to replace U.S. Special Operations Command's smaller MkV Special Operations Craft and Naval Special Warfare Rigid Inflatable Boats for "inserting and extracting SOF in low-to-medium threat environment," according to an unclassified SOCOM briefing. |
Thousands demand Putin quit as birthday protests turn violent Posted: 07 Oct 2017 02:52 PM PDT Russian police violently broke up a rally in Saint Petersburg as thousands took to the streets across Russia Saturday on President Vladimir Putin's 65th birthday, urging him to quit power. Heeding the call of jailed opposition leader Alexei Navalny to demand competitive elections, around 3,000 people rallied in Russia's second city and Putin's hometown while more than a thousand demonstrated in the centre of Moscow, AFP reporters said. |
Dove apologises for advert showing black woman transforming into white model Posted: 08 Oct 2017 02:20 PM PDT Dove has issued an apology for an advertising campaign branded "racist" which included an image of a black woman removing her top to reveal a white model underneath. The series of adverts, which have provoked outcry on social media after being circulated on Facebook, also showed a third image portraying a caucasian woman transforming into an Asian woman as she undresses. Following the furore, Dove published a statement which stated: "An image we recently posted on Facebook missed the mark in representing women of colour thoughtfully. We deeply regret the offence it caused. "As part of a campaign for Dove body wash, a three-second video clip was posted to the US Facebook page. "This did not represent the diversity of real beauty which is something Dove is passionate about and is core to our beliefs, and it should not have happened. "We have removed the post and have not published any other related content. We apologise deeply and sincerely for the offence that it has caused." The advert was highlighted by Naomi Blake, who posted the images on social media The images first went viral after an American makeup artist, Naomi Blake, shared them with her followers on social media. She said: "What does America tell black people...that we are judged by the colour of our skin and that includes what is considered beautiful in this country. "To know that colorism is a problem in the world, that includes bleaching the skin, and they would put this ad out without a thought...the tone deafness in these companies makes no sense." The controversy comes two years after the cosmetics brand faced a wave of criticism for the product literature on one of its self-tanning products. The "summer glow" lotion, aimed at people with "normal to dark skin", was labelled racist because it suggested that consumers with darker skin were not "normal". Meanwhile, in 2011 Dove was again accused of racism for using a before and after image in an advert for its "visiblecare" range, which appeared to place three women on a colour gradient. The image, which portrayed a black, an Asian and a white woman standing together, appeared to suggest that the lightest skinned woman was the end result. |

Syrian jihadist alliance decries rebel groups planning incursion: statement Posted: 07 Oct 2017 10:32 AM PDT Tahrir al-Sham, an alliance of jihadist factions in Syria, on Saturday decried Turkey-backed Syrian rebel factions planning an operation in the northwestern Idlib province where it dominates, saying it would "not be a picnic" for them. Earlier on Saturday Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan said Syrian rebel fighters were preparing to launch "a serious operation" in Idlib backed by Turkish forces from inside Turkey's borders. The operation comes after an agreement last month between Turkey, Russia and Iran to set up a "de-escalation zone" in northwest Syria where Idlib is located to reduce warfare there. |

Posted: 07 Oct 2017 09:28 AM PDT A grieving widower survivalist and a young Puerto Rican couple have found a way to turn tragedy into hope. Forty barrels, filled with over 300 pounds of food each are making their way to Puerto Rico after Joseph Badame ran into Victoria Barber at an estate sale where bankers were selling of Mr Badame's New Jersey home. The food — amassed over 45 years as Mr Badame prepared with his late wife for a potential national or international crisis — were not for sale, and the 74-year-old was concerned it would all get tossed. |
North Korea's Air Force Is Total Junk (But It Can Still Kill) Posted: 07 Oct 2017 06:43 AM PDT North Korea's Korean People's Army Air Force (KPAAF)—referred to as the Air and Anti-Air Force Command in South Korean documents—is not in the top ranks of the world's air forces. The regime's survival is their survival, and thus the so-called Korean People's Army is a dedicated to their supreme leader and is likely to put up a fanatical defense in the event of a renewed war. Among the most antiquated and obsolete aircraft in the North Korean air force is the Shenyang J-5, a Chinese copy of the 1950s-era Mikoyan Gurevich MiG-17 Fresco. |

In a grisly case worthy of a Nordic noir thriller, Copenhagen police inspector Jens Moller Jensen told reporters that divers had found bags containing her missing clothes, her head and legs in Koge Bay, south of the Danish capital. "Last night our forensic dentist confirmed that it was Kim Wall's head," he said. |
