San Francisco voters back 'homeless tax' on wealthy firms Posted: 07 Nov 2018 04:30 PM PST San Francisco voters backed a tax on the city's wealthiest companies to tackle homelessness, passing a measure that divided the tech community. A tally posted Wednesday showed that 60 percent of voters in the city home to Airbnb, Uber, Salesforce, and Twitter cast ballots in favor of "Proposition C," a local ballot measure brought about by a 28,000 signature petition this summer. A number of San Francisco's tech bosses -- including Twitter chief Jack Dorsey and Patrick Collison of payment startup Stripe -- resisted the proposal. |

Macron Stirs Anger With Comment on WWI Hero Who Later Helped the Nazis Posted: 07 Nov 2018 08:45 AM PST The French leader, whose popularity has been hit by a series of comments interpreted as insensitive, provoked controversy again Wednesday when he defended his decision to include WWII Nazi-collaborator and Vichy leader Philippe Petain in a ceremony for military leaders from the first World War. Petain was named "Marshal," a distinction given to top French generals, for his role in leading French troops to victory in WWI. |

Ocasio-Cortez, NY Democrat rock star makes history Posted: 06 Nov 2018 09:27 PM PST Democratic rising star Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez made history Tuesday as the youngest woman elected to Congress, riding a wave of minority women taking office and cementing her place as a prominent voice on the left of US politics. "We have made history tonight," the grinning 29-year-old told cheering supporters at her victory party in Queens, an astonishing victory for a woman working in a Manhattan restaurant only a year ago. With telegenic looks, charisma and youthful idealism, she is at once a media darling and a lightning rod for criticism. |

After deadly Lion Air crash, new focus on torrid industry growth in Indonesia Posted: 08 Nov 2018 12:58 AM PST The EU removed the privately owned budget airline from the list in 2016 after it determined Lion Air met international safety standards. None of Indonesia's roughly 100 airlines - most of them tiny - remain on the EU blacklist, with the last few coming off in June. The crash of a Lion Air jet on Oct. 29 into the sea off Jakarta has put a spotlight back on the airline's safety record, although the cause remains undetermined. |

Yemen troops advance deeper into rebel-held Hodeida Posted: 08 Nov 2018 10:35 AM PST Yemeni pro-government forces backed by Saudi-led coalition warplanes advanced inside rebel-held Hodeida Thursday, leaving hundreds of thousands of civilians bracing for fighting in the streets of the Red Sea port city. After a week of intense battles with the Iran-backed Huthi insurgents on the outskirts of Hodeida, loyalist troops reached residential neighbourhoods, using bulldozers to remove concrete road blocks installed by the rebels. Flashing victory signs, troops of the United Arab Emirates-trained Giants Brigade armed with automatic weapons and rocket-propelled grenades rolled down the city's streets in pickup trucks bearing their brigade logo spray-painted in red, a journalist working for AFP reported. |

Kentucky county clerk who refused same-sex marriage licenses loses re-election bid Posted: 06 Nov 2018 10:35 PM PST Kim Davis, the county clerk in Kentucky who was briefly jailed for defying a court order to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples, has lost her bid for re-election. SEE ALSO: Lurking John King is the best part of CNN's election coverage As reported by CNN, the controversial conservative Republican was beaten by Democrat Elwood Caudill Jr. in Rowan County by about 650 votes, according to unofficial results posted by the state elections board. Clerk's race, defeating incumbent Kim Davis. @WKYT pic.twitter.com/h2GiVresEO — Matthew Rand (@MatthewWKYT) November 7, 2018 Davis, part of a denomination called Apostolic Christianity, made headlines in 2015 after she refused to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples, despite a historic Supreme Court ruling that legalized same-sex marriages across the country the same year. Davis was found in contempt of court for not issuing the licenses and also stopping her six deputy clerks from signing them, and she spent five days in jail. Kentucky later changed the law, so that marriage licenses statewide that no longer require county clerks' names to appear on them. Davis was soon back in the seat, earning just shy of $80,000 a year as country clerk, which WDRB reports as more than twice what the average job pays in Rowan County, Kentucky. Caudill won the Democratic nomination in May to take on Davis, defeating David Ermold, a gay man who was denied a marriage license by Davis "under God's authority," in 2015. Ermold announced he was running for county clerk in December, and raised more than $200,000 in funding. But Caudill, chief deputy in the county property valuation office, eventually won over the Democrats. "The acquisition of Spin is the latest strategic move by Ford in the mobility space, as the company builds a mobility portfolio to help customers get places more easily, more quickly and less expensively," Ford said in a statement. Ford's move adds a major new player to the hot segment that includes Uber, Lyft and others operating in dozens of cities worldwide, allowing smartphone users to unlock and ride the scooters and leave them anywhere, with no dock required. |
Democrats make early midterm gains but 'blue wave' yet to materialize Posted: 06 Nov 2018 07:03 PM PST Democrats made a series of early gains as the first polls closed in the 2018 midterm elections, but uncertainty loomed over the prospect of a "blue wave" as the majority of House and Senate races were too close to call. As initial returns trickled in from the midwest and east coast, Republicans remained competitive in key congressional and gubernatorial contests that mark a critical test for Donald Trump his administration. An energized American electorate is poised to deliver a verdict on the direction of the country under the president's stewardship and whether Republicans should remain in power in Washington. |

High blood pressure before age 40 linked to a higher risk of cardiovascular disease later in life Posted: 07 Nov 2018 06:01 AM PST New US research has found that younger adults with high blood pressure before the age of 40 have an increased risk of cardiovascular events such as heart failure, strokes and blood vessel blockages as they age. Led by researchers at Duke Health, the study used the new US blood pressure guidelines issued in 2017, which lowered the clinical definition of high blood pressure from earlier levels, to investigate the association between level of blood pressure (BP) in young adulthood and the risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) by middle age. |
