Tesla responds, questioning IIHS motives after Model S fails to impress in crash test

Tesla's class-leading Model S did not fail the most recent crash tests conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). However, the electric sports sedan did not achieve a top rating in one particular test, the results of which were published late on Wednesday. The test results have caused a bit of a buzz, especially considering how well the Model S had performed in similar tests in the past. And the test in question is a crucial one, designed to judge a vehicle's performance in a front-end collision where the impact occurs on the driver side.

Following the release of the test results, Tesla has issued a statement in response to concerns that its flagship sedan did not achieve top scores.

The IIHS test in question is designed to assess a vehicle's performance when a collision occurs at the front driver-side corner of the car. The test, referred to by the IIHS as a "small overlap front crash test," simulates a typical impact with a tree or another vehicle.

Tesla's Model S achieved the highest possible rating in each of the IIHS's tests aside from the small overlap front crash test, where the sports sedan only managed an "acceptable" rating. Meanwhile, the Lincoln Continental, Mercedes E-Class and Toyota Avalon all received the highest overall rating in the test.

Here's a video showing a Model S crash test similar to the one conducted by the IIHS:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uecPZvDPQgg

According to Reuters, the IIHS determined that the Model S's seat belt and air bags were not effective in the test, and they could fail to prevent the driver's head from striking the steering wheel. In response to the claims made by the IIHS following its most recent round of testing, Tesla issued a statement.

"IIHS and dozens of other private industry groups around the world have methods and motivations that suit their own subjective purposes," a Tesla spokesperson said. "The most objective and accurate independent testing of vehicle safety is currently done by the U.S. Government which found Model S and Model X to be the two cars with the lowest probability of injury of any cars that it has ever tested, making them the safest cars in history."

Tesla shares slid more than 7% to close at $327.09 on Wednesday. The stock continued to fall during the after-hours session, and was down nearly 3% to $317.50 at the time of this writing.

U.S. proposes cutting total biofuels requirements in 2018By Chris Prentice, Jarrett Renshaw and David Shepardson NEW YORK (Reuters) - The U.S. government on Wednesday proposed to reduce the volume of biofuel required to be used in gasoline and diesel fuel next year as it signaled the first step toward a potential broader overhaul of its biofuels program. The U.S. Renewable Fuel Standard, or RFS, requires increased volumes of renewable fuels each year, but the proposal would keep targets for use of conventional biofuels at current levels. The agency has begun preparations to reset future biofuel targets, said EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt.

Summer's here: Time for people to get weird about sleeveless dresses in Congress

Summer's here: Time for people to get weird about sleeveless dresses in CongressIn the brutal throes of the Washington, D.C. summer, female reporters are reportedly getting barred from the Speaker's lobby for — wait for it — wearing sleeveless dresses. According to a CBS News report, one "young, female" reporter even tried to craft makeshift sleeves out of notebook paper to avoid being ejected. (It didn't work.) On Twitter, CQ Roll Call reporter Kellie Mejdrich said she was told she'd be removed from the Speaker's lobby if she wore a sleeveless dress again. SEE ALSO: Woman kicked out of a mall for wearing what women wear in warm months Can confirm I was warned the next time I would be removed https://t.co/M0BTcFYchO — Kellie Mejdrich (@kelmej) July 6, 2017 It's clear the issue of attire in the House is important to Speaker/muscle shirt wearer Paul Ryan. In late June, he even took time to remind lawmakers to wear "appropriate business attire" — which means suits for men, sleeved dresses or suits for women, and closed-toed shoes for all.  But, unfortunately, we can't quite blame Ryan for the Great Sleeve Crackdown of '17. Like many bullshit dress codes, Sleevegate rears its ugly, patriarchal head every summer when the weather heats up, no matter which party is in charge. Meanwhile, Ivanka Trump, Melania Trump, and towel charm mogul Karen Pence continue to wear as many sleeveless dresses as they want. Appeals grow to pardon mentally ill US killerTwo top UN rights officials added their voices Wednesday to a growing chorus of appeals to Virginia's governor to spare the life of a mentally disturbed man found guilty of killing a police officer and prison guard. Defenders of 35-year-old William Morva say his fragile psychological condition should preclude his execution, scheduled to take place on Thursday through lethal injection. "We are deeply concerned about information we have received indicating that Mr Morva's original trial did not meet fair trial safeguards, which include reasonable accommodation in all stages of the process, and may therefore have breached international standards," said UN Special Rapporteurs on summary executions, Agnes Callamard, and on right to health, Dainius Puras.
