Las Vegas police give disturbing account of storming Stephen Paddock's hotel room Posted: 09 Oct 2017 08:01 AM PDT One week after shooter Stephen Paddock executed the deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. history at a Las Vegas country music festival, four first responders are speaking out about what they witnessed that day. In a new episode of "60 Minutes," Detectives Casey Clarkson and Matthew Donaldson, Officers Joshua Bitsko and Dave Newton and SWAT team member Levi Hancock described the harrowing scene they encountered after storming Paddock's 32nd-floor Mandalay Bay hotel room on October 2. Eventually, the team was able to zero in on room 159 after a hotel-security guard named Jesus Campos reported that he saw about 200 rounds fired into the hallway from behind Paddock's door. |

Las Vegas police recall moment they stormed Stephen Paddock's hotel room Posted: 09 Oct 2017 07:19 AM PDT Las Vegas police officers have recalled the "deadly game of hide and seek" they faced before storming gunman Stephen Paddock's hotel room. The ad-hoc SWAT team swooped on Paddock's Mandalay Bay room within 12 minutes of the 64-year-old unleashing a torrent of gunfire onto the outdoor Route 91 Harvest country music festival, killing 58 and injuring 489. They revealed how Paddock had barricaded shut a stairwell door on the 32nd floor of the hotel by screwing a piece of metal across it to prevent officers from reaching him and had also set up surveillance cameras outside his room. The first officers at the scene initially believed they could be dealing with multiple gunmen and also feared the room might have been booby-trapped, they told CBS News. "There's a room service cart with wires going on it underneath the door. There was something black on top of the cart. So initially I'm, you know, I'm thinking, 'This is a booby-trap. It's gonna explode'," explained Officer Dave Newton. "It turned out to be cameras on the food tray," he said. Stephen Paddock's killing spree left 59 people dead Credit: Eric Paddock via AP He recalled the suspect's door was just "riddled with bullet holes coming out". He said: "It looked like Swiss cheese". Inside the room, officers described seeing "so many guns" that his suite resembled an armoury or gun store. "So many magazines. Stacks and stacks of magazines everywhere. Just in suitcases all neatly stacked against pillars, around the room, all stacked up, rifles placed all throughout," added Officer Newton. "All kinds of monitors and electrical equipment he had in there. It just looked like almost a gun store." He described being inside the room as "very eerie", adding he spotted a note containing calculations to maximise kills and accuracy. 50 dead in Las Vegas shooting, in pictures "I did notice a note on the nightstand near his shooting platform," said Officer Newton. "I could see on it he had written the distance, the elevation he was on, the drop of what his bullet was gonna be for the crowd. So he had had that written down and figured out so he would know where to shoot to hit his targets from there. "He ... must have done the calculations online or something to figure out what his altitude was going to be and how high up he was-- how far out the crowd was going to be and what at that distance and what the drop of his bullet was going to be. He hadn't written out the calculations all he had was written out the final numbers that were on the sheet." By the time the officers had entered the room, Paddock had already committed suicide. Las Vegas Sheriff Joseph Lombardo the team "prevented a thousand deaths" by getting to Paddock's room within 12 minutes. |
Nigerian VP Osinbajo says running for presidency not 'on the cards' Posted: 09 Oct 2017 03:05 AM PDT By Libby George and Karin Strohecker LONDON (Reuters) - Nigeria's Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, who has served as acting president for much of this year, said on Monday he had not given any thought to contesting the country's next presidential election in 2019. Nigeria has faced heightened uncertainty over whether President Muhammadu Buhari plans to contest the next election. Buhari, 74, took power in 2015 but has been absent for much of this year due to illness. |

Moscow says US 'pretending' to fight IS in Iraq Posted: 10 Oct 2017 09:43 AM PDT Moscow accused the US on Tuesday of reducing air strikes against the Islamic State group in Iraq to let jihadists into Syria and fight the Russian-backed Syrian army, claims the Pentagon denied. Russian military spokesman Igor Konashenkov said the Syrian regime was attempting to push the jihadists out of eastern Deir Ezzor province, but that arrivals from Iraq were boosting their numbers. "The US-led coalition, pretending to fight IS, largely in Iraq, sees all this but continues allegedly active measures against IS in Syria for some reason," he said. |

Turkey urges U.S. to review visa suspension as lira, stocks tumble Posted: 09 Oct 2017 01:52 PM PDT By Tuvan Gumrukcu and Daren Butler ANKARA (Reuters) - Turkey urged the United States on Monday to review its suspension of visa services after the arrest of a U.S. consulate employee sharply escalated tension between the two NATO allies and drove Turkey's currency and stocks lower. Relations between Ankara and Washington have been plagued by disputes over U.S. support for Kurdish fighters in Syria, Turkey's calls for the extradition of a U.S.-based cleric and the indictment of a Turkish former minister in a U.S. court. |

No angst over Turkey's air defense deal with Russia, says NATO chief Posted: 10 Oct 2017 04:25 AM PDT By Robin Emmott CRAIOVA, Romania (Reuters) - NATO ally Turkey is not seeking to antagonize the U.S.-led alliance by purchasing Russian S-400 surface-to-air missiles and is in talks with France and Italy to buy similar weapons, NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said. Ankara's decision to buy the Russian system has been seen in some Western capitals as a snub to the alliance, given tensions with Moscow over Ukraine and Syria, while the deal raised concern because the weapons cannot be integrated into NATO defense. "There hasn't been any request from Turkey to integrate the S-400 into NATO air defense system," Stoltenberg told Reuters in an interview on a Belgian military plane returning from Romania late on Monday. |

Bolivia's Morales lauds Che on 50th anniversary of death Posted: 09 Oct 2017 03:05 PM PDT Bolivian President Evo Morales lauded Ernesto "Che" Guevara on Monday as he led commemorations 50 years to the day since the Cuban revolutionary leader was killed by CIA-trained Bolivian troops. "The best way to pay tribute to Che is to continue his struggle, an anti-imperialist struggle," the socialist Morales told an audience including Guevara's brothers and four children in the mountain town of Vallegrande in central Bolivia. The ceremony capped five days of special remembrance of the Argentine-born revolutionary in Bolivia, whose government ordered his execution on October 9, 1967, a day after he was wounded and captured in a firefight with a special CIA-trained unit of the Bolivian army. |

Israel says Hezbollah runs Lebanese army, signaling both are foes Posted: 10 Oct 2017 08:28 AM PDT By Dan Williams JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Israel said on Tuesday that the Hezbollah guerrilla group, its most potent enemy in neighboring Lebanon, had gained control over that country's U.S.-sponsored conventional military, signaling both would be in Israeli gunsights in any future war. Defence Minister Avigdor Lieberman's remarks were a hard tack from more measured recent Israeli estimates that the Lebanese army maintained autonomy even if some of its troops cooperated with the better-armed, Iranian-aligned guerrillas. Outlining potential threats in Lebanon, where Israel last fought a war against Hezbollah in 2006, Lieberman said in a speech: "We are no longer talking about Hezbollah alone". |
Stärke Revolution Speedster to offer the best of both worlds Posted: 09 Oct 2017 09:25 AM PDT US automotive coachbuilder Stärke wants to re-box the Porsche Boxster as a visual homage to the iconic Porsche 356 Speedster -- just don't call the finished car a restomod. Instead, the Stärke Revolution Speedster, which is set to make its global debut on October 20 in Las Vegas, has been dubbed by its creators -- father and son team Wade E and Maxwell Morrison -- as a restobod. Because rather than take a 1950s Porsche and update its engine, suspension brakes and steering for the 21st century (and in doing so destroy its value on the collector car market), the company starts with a modern Porsche Boxster that it meticulously re-bodies and re-trims so that on initial inspection, it looks just like a classic Porsche. |
