In June 2011, police discovered a vehicle submerged at the bottom of a set of locks in a canal in Kingston, Ontario. Inside the car were the dead bodies of three teen sisters, including Geeti Shafia, and a 52-year-old woman. Tooba Yahya, 42, her husband Mohammad Shafia, 58, and their eldest son, Hamed, 20, are charged with the murder of Zainab, 19, Sahar, 17, and Geeti, 13, along with Shafia's first wife, Rona Amir Mohammad. The case has ignited a debate in Canada about honor killings and the cultural clashes often experienced between first- and second-generation immigrants who struggle to maintain orthodox cultural or religious values and their children, who often desire to fit into a Western, more liberal society.
