US leads sanctions push after NKorea 'escalation' Posted: 05 Jul 2017 04:50 PM PDT The United States led a push at the UN Security Council Wednesday for tougher sanctions on North Korea, while warning the isolated regime's launch of an intercontinental ballistic missile had drastically narrowed the path for diplomacy. In a hard-hitting address to the council, US Ambassador Nikki Haley said Tuesday's ICBM test had made "the world a more dangerous place," and that Washington was ready to use force if need be to deal with the threat of a nuclear-armed Pyongyang. |

Kremlin hopes Putin-Trump meeting to establish working dialogue Posted: 05 Jul 2017 03:50 AM PDT Moscow hopes the first face-to-face meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and his U.S. counterpart Donald Trump later this week will establish an effective working dialogue between the two men, the Kremlin said on Wednesday. The meeting, due to be held on the sidelines of the G20 summit in Hamburg on Friday, will be closely watched at a time when ties between the two countries remain strained by U.S. allegations of Russian election hacking, Syria, Ukraine and a U.S. row over Trump associates' links to Moscow. "This is the first meeting, the first time the two presidents will get acquainted - this is the main thing about it," Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told a conference call with reporters. |

Arab states rap 'negative' Qatari reply to demands but no new sanctions Posted: 05 Jul 2017 02:53 PM PDT By Ahmed Aboulenein and Karin Strohecker CAIRO/LONDON (Reuters) - Four Arab states refrained on Wednesday from slapping further sanctions on Qatar but voiced disappointment at its "negative" response to their demands and said their boycott of the tiny Gulf nation would continue. Qatar earlier in the day accused Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, and Egypt of "clear aggression" and said the accusations cited when they severed ties a month ago "were clearly designed to create anti-Qatar sentiment in the West". The four Arab nations accuse Qatar of supporting terrorism and allying with regional foe Iran, which Doha denies. |
US retailer to pay $3mn fine, return Iraqi artifacts Posted: 05 Jul 2017 03:53 PM PDT US arts and crafts retailer Hobby Lobby has agreed to forfeit thousands of ancient Iraqi artifacts and pay $3 million to settle a civil suit brought by the US government, prosecutors announced Wednesday. The Department of Justice says thousands of cuneiform tablets and clay bullae, originally from Iraq, were smuggled into the United States via the United Arab Emirates and Israel in packages shipped to the Oklahoma-based company. Hobby Lobby said that in 2009 it began acquiring artifacts "consistent with the company's mission and passion for the Bible" with the goal of preserving them for future generations and sharing them with public institutions and museums. |

More than 100 shot in Chicago during Fourth of July weekend Posted: 05 Jul 2017 01:16 PM PDT More than 100 people were shot in Chicago during the Fourth of July long holiday weekend. Almost half the victims were shot between Tuesday afternoon and early Wednesday morning. The violent weekend occurred after the Department of Justice and the Chicago Police Department announced last week the new details of the Chicago Gun Strike Force, a partnership between federal and local authorities to combat the rising levels of gun violence in the city. |
'Placenta Pills' Led to Bacterial Infection in Baby Posted: 05 Jul 2017 09:16 AM PDT A woman who ate her placenta after giving birth wound up spreading a potentially deadly infection to her baby, according to a new report of the case. The mother had paid a company to make pills from her placenta after the birth of her baby, and she began taking these placenta pills three days after the baby was born. The baby was born healthy in September 2016, but started showing signs of respiratory distress soon after birth, according to the report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). |

Bare-chested Pamplona marchers call for end to bull runs Posted: 05 Jul 2017 10:26 AM PDT Around 100 shirtless protesters covered in red powder called for a ban on bullfighting and bull runs as they marched through the streets of Pamplona on Wednesday, in a prelude to the northern Spanish city's famous bull festival. The activists from animal rights groups People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) and AnimaNaturalis wore horns on their head and bore slogans including 'Stop Bull Fights' painted in black on their chests. The annual San Fermin festival draws thousands from across the world to brave the 875-metre course through the narrow streets of the medieval city, along which runners in white shirts and red scarves are chased by bulls. |
Posted: 05 Jul 2017 09:17 AM PDT National Public Radio (NPR) tweeted the Declaration of Independence line by line for the 4 July holiday and Donald Trump's supporters were not impressed. NPR meant the series of more than a 100 tweets as a celebration of the founding document of the country and did it to honour of a 29-year tradition of reading the Declaration on air. Some saw the tweets as particularly relevant to the state of current affairs and praised the action as a reminder of why federal funding for the public broadcaster should not be cut, as the Trump administration has proposed. |

Peru reconstructs face of woman who ruled 1,700 years ago Posted: 05 Jul 2017 08:43 AM PDT Introducing the Lady of Cao: using high-tech 3-D printing and based on the skull of an ancient mummy, scientists have reconstructed the face of a woman who governed in northern Peru 1,700 years ago. The woman's mummified remains were discovered at the Cao Viejo adobe pyramid in 2006 in the Chicama Valley, just north of the modern city of Trujillo. "Technology allows us to see the face of a political, religious and cultural leader of the past," Culture Minister Salvador del Solar said when he unveiled a life-like bust of the woman on Tuesday in Lima. |
Tesla responds, questioning IIHS motives after Model S fails to impress in crash test Posted: 06 Jul 2017 04:45 AM PDT Tesla's class-leading Model S did not fail the most recent crash tests conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). However, the electric sports sedan did not achieve a top rating in one particular test, the results of which were published late on Wednesday. The test results have caused a bit of a buzz, especially considering how well the Model S had performed in similar tests in the past. And the test in question is a crucial one, designed to judge a vehicle's performance in a front-end collision where the impact occurs on the driver side. Following the release of the test results, Tesla has issued a statement in response to concerns that its flagship sedan did not achieve top scores. The IIHS test in question is designed to assess a vehicle's performance when a collision occurs at the front driver-side corner of the car. The test, referred to by the IIHS as a "small overlap front crash test," simulates a typical impact with a tree or another vehicle. Tesla's Model S achieved the highest possible rating in each of the IIHS's tests aside from the small overlap front crash test, where the sports sedan only managed an "acceptable" rating. Meanwhile, the Lincoln Continental, Mercedes E-Class and Toyota Avalon all received the highest overall rating in the test. Here's a video showing a Model S crash test similar to the one conducted by the IIHS: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uecPZvDPQgg According to Reuters, the IIHS determined that the Model S's seat belt and air bags were not effective in the test, and they could fail to prevent the driver's head from striking the steering wheel. In response to the claims made by the IIHS following its most recent round of testing, Tesla issued a statement. "IIHS and dozens of other private industry groups around the world have methods and motivations that suit their own subjective purposes," a Tesla spokesperson said. "The most objective and accurate independent testing of vehicle safety is currently done by the U.S. Government which found Model S and Model X to be the two cars with the lowest probability of injury of any cars that it has ever tested, making them the safest cars in history." Tesla shares slid more than 7% to close at $327.09 on Wednesday. The stock continued to fall during the after-hours session, and was down nearly 3% to $317.50 at the time of this writing. |
US soldier killed in Afghanistan's Helmand Posted: 05 Jul 2017 10:31 AM PDT A US soldier has been killed and two others wounded in an attack in Afghanistan's Helmand province while conducting operations against the Taliban, US military officials said Wednesday. Private First Class Hansen Kirkpatrick, 19, of Wasilla, Alaska died Monday following the "indirect fire" assault, which means he was hit by a mortar or some other incoming round. Pentagon spokesman Navy Captain Jeff Davis said the soldiers had been conducting an off-base operation with partnered Afghan security forces when they came under fire. |

U.S. proposes cutting total biofuels requirements in 2018 Posted: 05 Jul 2017 03:44 PM PDT By Chris Prentice, Jarrett Renshaw and David Shepardson NEW YORK (Reuters) - The U.S. government on Wednesday proposed to reduce the volume of biofuel required to be used in gasoline and diesel fuel next year as it signaled the first step toward a potential broader overhaul of its biofuels program. The U.S. Renewable Fuel Standard, or RFS, requires increased volumes of renewable fuels each year, but the proposal would keep targets for use of conventional biofuels at current levels. The agency has begun preparations to reset future biofuel targets, said EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt. |
Summer's here: Time for people to get weird about sleeveless dresses in Congress Posted: 06 Jul 2017 01:22 PM PDT In the brutal throes of the Washington, D.C. summer, female reporters are reportedly getting barred from the Speaker's lobby for — wait for it — wearing sleeveless dresses. According to a CBS News report, one "young, female" reporter even tried to craft makeshift sleeves out of notebook paper to avoid being ejected. (It didn't work.) On Twitter, CQ Roll Call reporter Kellie Mejdrich said she was told she'd be removed from the Speaker's lobby if she wore a sleeveless dress again. SEE ALSO: Woman kicked out of a mall for wearing what women wear in warm months Can confirm I was warned the next time I would be removed https://t.co/M0BTcFYchO — Kellie Mejdrich (@kelmej) July 6, 2017 It's clear the issue of attire in the House is important to Speaker/muscle shirt wearer Paul Ryan. In late June, he even took time to remind lawmakers to wear "appropriate business attire" — which means suits for men, sleeved dresses or suits for women, and closed-toed shoes for all. But, unfortunately, we can't quite blame Ryan for the Great Sleeve Crackdown of '17. Like many bullshit dress codes, Sleevegate rears its ugly, patriarchal head every summer when the weather heats up, no matter which party is in charge. Meanwhile, Ivanka Trump, Melania Trump, and towel charm mogul Karen Pence continue to wear as many sleeveless dresses as they want. Appeals grow to pardon mentally ill US killer Posted: 05 Jul 2017 10:44 AM PDT Two top UN rights officials added their voices Wednesday to a growing chorus of appeals to Virginia's governor to spare the life of a mentally disturbed man found guilty of killing a police officer and prison guard. Defenders of 35-year-old William Morva say his fragile psychological condition should preclude his execution, scheduled to take place on Thursday through lethal injection. "We are deeply concerned about information we have received indicating that Mr Morva's original trial did not meet fair trial safeguards, which include reasonable accommodation in all stages of the process, and may therefore have breached international standards," said UN Special Rapporteurs on summary executions, Agnes Callamard, and on right to health, Dainius Puras. |

Hong Kong seizes 7.2 tonnes of ivory Posted: 06 Jul 2017 02:39 AM PDT More than seven tonnes of ivory worth over US$9 million was seized in Hong Kong, officials said Thursday, the largest bust of its kind in the city in three decades. The 7,200 kilogramme (16,000 pound) haul was hidden underneath frozen fish and raised suspicions because of the high transportation fees listed on the bill of import. Customs officials in the southern Chinese city said the cargo had come from Malaysia and was believed to have been the work of a major smuggling ring. |
