The demonstration was being organised in an effort to unseat Rahm Emanuel, Chicago's Democratic mayor, and Eddie Johnson, the city's police superintendent, according to organisers. Protestors planned to march from Lake Shore Drive to Wrigleyville in the middle of Thursday rush hour, and had not ruled out entering the Wrigley Field, where the Chicago Cubs were scheduled to play against the San Diego Padres. |
Danish ban on Islamic full-face veil takes effect Posted: 01 Aug 2018 06:26 AM PDT Denmark's ban on the Islamic full-face veil in public spaces came into force on Wednesday, with anyone wearing a garment that hides the face in public risking a fine. Human rights campaigners have slammed the ban as a violation of women's rights, while supporters argue it enables better integration of Muslim immigrants into Danish society. It is not known how many women wear the niqab or burqa in Denmark. |

CNN reporter walks out of press briefing after heated exchange with Sarah Huckabee Sanders Posted: 02 Aug 2018 11:39 AM PDT The Trump administration hasn't been on the best of terms with the media lately, to put it lightly. On Thursday, CNN's Jim Acosta walked out of a White House press briefing after Sarah Huckabee Sanders refused to confirm that the press corps is not the "enemy of the people," as Trump has repeatedly called them in the past. SEE ALSO: Sarah Huckabee Sanders tries and fails to explain Trump's odd comment on groceries "...You read off a laundry list of your concerns about the press and things you feel like are misreported," Acosta told Sanders. "You did not say that you feel like the press is not the enemy of the people. I think it would be a good thing if you were to say, right here, at the briefing, that the press ... are not the enemy of the people." Sanders then proceeded to attack Acosta and the press, particularly his own network, CNN. Acosta, who's become a target of Trump supporters' wrath in recent weeks, then walked out of the briefing and posted this tweet: I walked out of the end of that briefing because I am totally saddened by what just happened. Sarah Sanders was repeatedly given a chance to say the press is not the enemy and she wouldn't do it. Shameful. — Jim Acosta (@Acosta) August 2, 2018 Acosta explained his decision further on CNN: Just another wildly upsetting day in America, folks. More than 500 migrant fathers and sons detained in Texas after being separated from each other for weeks and months have launched a strike against unfair conditions. The fathers plan to resist orders and refuse food at three sites at Karnes detention center, while the sons are set to refuse to participate in school activities. |
Israel and Jordan kill Islamic State fighters flushed out of Syria Posted: 02 Aug 2018 07:42 AM PDT By Dan Williams and Suleiman Al-Khalidi JERUSALEM/AMMAN (Reuters) - Israel and Jordan said on Thursday that their forces had killed Islamic State insurgents who approached their borders after being squeezed out of southwestern Syria by the army of President Bashar al-Assad. In a nod to his battlefield gains, Israel described victory by Assad, who is on a last push to restore his rule after more than seven years of civil war, as a fait accompli that could calm the Golan Heights. The strategic plateau divides Israel and Syria, old foes, and saw decades of stable stand-off before the Syrian rebellion. |

Posted: 02 Aug 2018 02:11 AM PDT Donald Trump, the US President, said on Thursday he looked forward to meeting Kim Jong-un soon and thanked the North Korean leader for sending the suspected remains of US soldiers killed in the 1950-1953 Korean War back to the United States. "Thank you to Chairman Kim Jong-un for keeping your word & starting the process of sending home the remains of our great and beloved missing fallen! I am not at all surprised that you took this kind action," Mr Trump wrote in a Twitter message. "Also, thank you for your nice letter - I look forward to seeing you soon!", Mr Trump said, without elaborating. The pledge to return the remains of US soldiers was made during a landmark summit between Mr Trump and Kim in June in Singapore, where North Korea committed to work towards the complete denuclearisation of the Korean peninsula. Kim sent a letter to Mr Trump in mid-July in which the North Korean leader said he hoped there would be a second meeting between the two but it was unclear if that was the "nice letter" to which Mr Trump referred on Thursday. Thank you to Chairman Kim Jong Un for keeping your word & starting the process of sending home the remains of our great and beloved missing fallen! I am not at all surprised that you took this kind action. Also, thank you for your nice letter - l look forward to seeing you soon!— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) August 2, 2018 Mr Trump also took to Twitter earlier to praise an "incredibly beautiful ceremony" in Hawaii, where Vice President Mike Pence helped welcome the remains to the United States. The United States said during a solemn ceremony on Wednesday the human remains presumably included Americans killed in the Korean War and thanked North Korea for making good on its pledge to hand them over. A very nice note from Chairman Kim of North Korea. Great progress being made! pic.twitter.com/6NI6AqL0xt— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) July 12, 2018 The pledge to transfer war remains was seen as a goodwill gesture by Kim at the Singapore summit and was the most concrete agreement reached by the two sides so far. "I know that President Trump is grateful that Chairman Kim has kept his word, and we see today this tangible progress in our efforts to achieve peace on the Korean peninsula," said Pence, whose father fought in the Korean War. More than 7,700 U.S. troops remain unaccounted for from the Korea War. About 5,300 were lost in what is now North Korea. Experts say positively identifying the decades-old remains could take anywhere from days to decades. Still, an initial field forensic review indicated the "remains are what North Korea said they were", John Byrd, director of analysis for the US Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency, told reporters at an air base in South Korea before the remains were flown to Hawaii. Sarah Sanders, the White House press secretary, said: "A letter to President Trump from Chairman Kim was received on August 1. "The ongoing correspondence between the two leaders is aimed at following up on their meeting in Singapore and advancing the commitments made in the US-DPRK joint statement." |

Zimbabwe warns of crackdown after opposition vote protests Posted: 01 Aug 2018 06:13 PM PDT Zimbabwe's government vowed Wednesday to crack down on opposition dissent after three people were killed when protests against alleged electoral fraud were met by live ammunition, denting hopes of a new era for the country. Soldiers fired on demonstrators during opposition MDC party protests in downtown Harare, AFP witnesses saw, with one man shot dead in the stomach. Monday's polls -- the first since autocratic president Robert Mugabe was forced out by a brief military takeover in November -- had been meant to turn the page on years of violence-marred elections and brutal repression of dissent. |

Where is Trump headed with his tougher policy toward Iran? Posted: 31 Jul 2018 05:46 PM PDT By Phil Stewart WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Donald Trump's offer of dialogue with Tehran belies a hardening of U.S. policy that intensifies economic and diplomatic pressure but so far stops short of using his military to more aggressively counter Iran and its proxies. U.S. officials tell Reuters that the goal of Trump's push is to curb Iranian behavior, which America, its Gulf allies and Israel say has fueled instability in the region through Tehran's support for militant groups. Trump has also voiced hope for a stronger agreement with Iran to prevent its pursuit of nuclear weaponry than the 2015 deal between Tehran and world powers which Trump pulled out of in May. But the U.S. government has not clearly defined its desired end state for its Iran policy or outlined a face-saving path for Iran's rulers that would allow them to deescalate steadily mounting tensions between Washington and Tehran, experts say. |
