Keep evidence from ex-NFLer Hernandez's prison suicide: judge Posted: 21 Apr 2017 02:20 PM PDT A Massachusetts state judge on Friday ordered prison officials to preserve any evidence collected from the cell of former National Football League star Aaron Hernandez, according to court documents, two days after he was found dead of an apparent suicide. Lawyers for Hernandez's family had sought the ruling to ensure they can conduct their own investigation into his death at the Souza-Baranowski Correctional Center in Lancaster, Massachusetts. A lawyer for the state correction department told Superior Court Judge Thomas McGuire in New Bedford, Massachusetts, that the maximum-security prison was already keeping any evidence, making a formal order unnecessary, the Boston Globe reported on Friday. |

Ronald Reagan’s son defends O’Reilly, asks if men should ‘sue for sexual arousal’ Posted: 21 Apr 2017 12:53 PM PDT Michael Reagan speaks at a rally for Republican Senate candidate Sharron Angle in 2010. Michael Reagan, son of late President Ronald Reagan, defended disgraced Fox News host Bill O'Reilly, who was ousted this week after advertisers boycotted the show en masse amid a sexual harassment scandal. The firestorm started after the New York Times revealed that O'Reilly and the network had shelled out $13 million in settlements to various women who had accused him of sexual harassment. |
Arrest of WikiLeaks's Assange a 'priority': US top cop Posted: 20 Apr 2017 07:56 PM PDT The arrest of WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange is a US "priority," Attorney General Jeff Sessions said, as media reports indicated his office was preparing charges against the fugitive anti-hero. "We are going to step up our effort and already are stepping up our efforts on all leaks," Sessions, America's top cop, said at a news conference in response to a reporter's question about a US priority to arrest Assange. The Justice Department chief said a rash of leaks of sensitive secrets appeared unprecedented. |

"We'll see if US prepared to live up to letter of #JCPOA (nuclear deal) let alone spirit," Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif tweeted. Zarif is almost as avid a user of Twitter as Trump despite it being officially banned in Iran. |
North Korea's show of force Posted: 21 Apr 2017 07:32 AM PDT (Reuters) - North Korea's latest display of its military hardware at a parade last week focused more on new missiles and less on tanks and artillery, suggesting it was trying to project the image of a country with advanced capabilities in warfare. The Reuters graphics team has analyzed the weapons shown during the five major parades staged in North Korea under its current leader Kim Jong Un, who took power in 2011 after the death of his father. Here is a link to the interactive graphic (http://tmsnrt.rs/2ox2IgH) The analysis shows there has been a gradual decline in tanks and artillery pieces on display since 2012, Kim Jong Un's first parade as leader, and a move to more long-range missiles. |

Obama's photographer takes down Sarah Palin with one very classy Instagram photo Posted: 21 Apr 2017 02:00 PM PDT Pete Souza is back at it again with the Instagram shade, and this time he's coming for Sarah Palin and her famous band of sidekicks. Sarah Palin, Ted Nugent, and Kid Rock ( author's note: ⁉️ ⁉️ ⁉️) hung out with President Trump on Thursday. And afterward, the former Alaskan governor shared photos of her visit on Facebook, thanking Trump for the invite. But one picture in particular caught Souza's eye. Standing before Hillary Clinton's official White House portrait, the very mature Palin, Nugent, and Kid Rock posed in very mature ways. SEE ALSO: Trump never has to buy sunglasses again because Obama's photographer will shade him forever Palin, in her off-the-shoulder top, is seen pointing to the portrait with an extraordinarily salty "huh, remember her?" look on her face. Nugent appears to be giving Clinton the old heave-ho hand signal. And Kid Rock? Well, despite the fact that he doesn't seem to be aware a photograph is being taken, he still has his arms crossed. Very classy. But for those peeved by the photograph, have no fear. Obama's heroic photographer is here with the shade. Digging deep into his nostalgic archives, Souza responded to Palin's photo by sharing a snapshot of Obama and his former White House chief of staff, Bill Daley, sitting together beneath Ronald Reagan's official White House portrait. Being respectful. A post shared by Pete Souza (@petesouza) on Apr 20, 2017 at 12:22pm PDT Without even mentioning Palin's name, Souza got his message across with a short caption: "Being respectful." So simple. So effective. WATCH: Eric Trump is now a front-runner for the Most Oblivious Thing Ever Said About the Internet by Anyone, Anywhere |

Iran election campaign kicks off without Ahmadinejad Posted: 20 Apr 2017 05:43 PM PDT Campaigning began on Friday for Iran's presidential election with incumbent Hassan Rouhani facing a tough battle against hardliners, though not from former president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad who was barred from standing. Ahmadinejad's disqualification by the conservative-run Guardian Council was no surprise -- he had been advised not to run by supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei who said it would "polarise" the nation. "Once the supreme leader had told him not to stand, it became impossible for him to be cleared by the Guardian Council," said Clement Therme, research fellow for Iran at the International Institute for Strategic Studies. |

Former Tennessee teacher in kidnapping case captured, girl safe Posted: 20 Apr 2017 06:34 PM PDT A former high school teacher and a 15-year-old student he is accused of abducting last month in Tennessee were traced to a cabin in northern California, where police on Thursday arrested him and took the girl into protective custody, authorities said. Tad Cummins, 50, who vanished in mid-March with Elizabeth Thomas, was apprehended on a fugitive warrant charging him with aggravated kidnapping and unlawful sexual contact with a minor, law enforcement officials said. The girl walked out behind him and was later turned over to the Federal Bureau of Investigation for additional questioning and a forensic exam, authorities said. |
Even Trump's Earth Day message was anti-science Posted: 22 Apr 2017 12:06 PM PDT President Donald Trump just released a statement for Earth Day, and it doesn't seem like he really loves the Earth? Along with some faint praise of America's "abundant natural resources and awe-inspiring beauty," Trump used Earth Day to talk about jobs. "Economic growth enhances environmental protection. We can and must protect our environment without harming America's working families. That is why my administration is reducing unnecessary burdens on American workers and American companies, while being mindful that our actions must also protect the environment," Trump said. Are those vague allusions to the Trump administration's move to revive the Keystone pipeline? Or to slash federal funding for scientific research? Or gut the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) greenhouse gas emissions rules? .@realDonaldTrump Earth Day msg is unusual, defends policies aimed at economic growth, says science depends on "robust debate." pic.twitter.com/XI6ovznOAs — Andrew Freedman (@afreedma) April 22, 2017 The White House statement didn't mention climate change, national parks, the EPA or anything else scientific that's been threatened or ignored by the Trump administration. Nor did it mention the many thousands of people who participated in the March for Science in Washington, D.C. and around the world on Saturday, many in direct response to the Trump administration's anti-science stances. In fact, the statement also included a line frequently used by those who deny the overwhelming evidence showing that human emissions of greenhouse gases cause global warming. "My Administration is committed to advancing scientific research that leads to a better understanding of our environment and of environmental risks," Trump said. "As we do so, we should remember that rigorous science depends not on ideology, but on a spirit of honest inquiry and robust debate," Trump said. He followed up with this tweet later in the day. I am committed to keeping our air and water clean but always remember that economic growth enhances environmental protection. Jobs matter! — Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) April 22, 2017 Lost on the president are two actual mainstays of science, which are research and observation. To Trump and those in his administration, climate science and other extremely well-researched topics are counted as ideologies, and put up for debate. "This April 22nd, as we observe Earth Day, I hope that our Nation can come together to give thanks for the land we all love and call home," Trump said. Wouldn't that be great? Philippines' Duterte tours Russian warship Posted: 21 Apr 2017 06:33 AM PDT Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte toured a visiting Russian warship on Friday for the second time in barely four months as he highlighted his growing closeness to Moscow. "The Russians are with me, I shall not be afraid," Duterte was quoted as saying during a visit to the Russian guided missile cruiser 'Varyag' which is on a port visit to Manila. Duterte toured the ship, posing for pictures with Russian sailors and in front of the vessel's huge missile-launchers, on what was the fourth ever port call by a Russian naval ship to the Philippines. |
Scientists find footprint of unknown ancient reptile in Spain Posted: 20 Apr 2017 09:39 PM PDT Scientists have discovered a fossilised footprint from about 247 to 248 million years ago in the Pyrenees mountains in Spain which they believe was made by a previously unknown species of reptile. The footprint was found among a series of tracks made by the ancestors of crocodiles and dinosaurs, a group known as archosauromorphs, the researchers from the Autonomous University of Barcelona and the Catalan Institute of Palaeontology said in a statement. The researchers said the footprints suggest the tracks which they found in the Pyrenees mountains in northeastern spain on the border with France were made by animals that used all four limbs to walk and often also left marks with their tails. |

The best plans for your new Galaxy S8 Posted: 21 Apr 2017 12:04 PM PDT The most wonderful of the time of the year, as it happens, is this morning. Not only is it Friday, but it's also launch day for the Samsung Galaxy S8. Right now, you can go wander into a store and come out with a phone with zero bezel, a curved display, and an iris reader. Even better, the battery won't explode. But a phone isn't much good without a mobile data plan, so to celebrate this momentous day, we've put together a comparison of the best plans you can get on each network for a Galaxy S8.
Best unlimited plansAll four major wireless carriers (Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile and Sprint) have plans that are generously called "Unlimited." What you really get isn't unlimited data; instead, you get unrestricted data up to a cap (over 20GB for all the plans), and then over that cap, you'll still get a connection but you may be throttled. There are also restrictions on using your cellphone as a wireless hotspot and streaming HD video, depending on the plan. Verizon and T-Mobile currently have the two best plans worth talking about. You can see our full breakdown of the different plans here, but based on a couple metrics and your particular needs, Verizon or T-Mobile are the carriers to go with. Verizon has the best coverage across the entire US, and its low-band network works better indoors or in rural areas. However, T-Mobile has a more dense network with the same average speeds as Verizon. And, ever since February, when Verizon started offering unlimited data plans, Verizon's network has started to become more congested. According to data from Speedtest.net, average connection speed for Verizon users has dropped slightly since the introduction of unlimited plans. Verizon's plan is better for heavy data users, both because of the quality of the network, and the fact that you get 10GB of hotspot data and free HD videos included in the price. T-Mobile's basic unlimited One plan doesn't allow tethering at 4G speeds or streaming HD video, but you can get both of those for a $5 per month add-on. The price for a single line is slightly in T-Mobile's favor. One unlimited line is $70 per month including taxes and fees, while Verizon's price is around $90 including taxes and fees. Best prepaid planIn addition to the four major networks you're familiar with, there are also a host of mobile virtual network operators (MVNO), which use one of the big carrier's networks to serve their own customers. They tend to be aimed at people on cheaper cellphone plans, and can provide good value for money if you don't need unlimited data. MintSIM is one of the best: it offers huge discounts by selling service for 3 months, 6 months or a year upfront. The idea is that you pay $199 for 12 months of unlimited talk, text, and 2GB of data a month. That works out to just $16.58 a month, which is a crazy saving on a regular data plan. It uses T-Mobile's network, so you should get the same coverage you do with Big Magenta. Republic Wireless is another beloved MVNO. Its best plan is $20 per month for talk, text and 1GB of data on Sprint or T-Mobile. |

Reuters reported on Wednesday that the Moscow-based Russian Institute for Strategic Studies (RISS) had provided the framework and rationale for what U.S. intelligence agencies have concluded was an intensive effort by Russia to interfere with the Nov. 8 election.
