U.S. IRS tax data hack traced to Russia: CNN Posted: 27 May 2015 02:27 PM PDT By Lisa Lambert WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. Internal Revenue Service believes the theft of about 100,000 taxpayers' personal data from its computer system originated in Russia, CNN reported on Wednesday. The tax agency's criminal unit is leading an investigation into the cyber attack, in which criminals stole information through an online IRS application over the course of four months, and the Treasury Department's inspector general and the Department of Homeland Security are also looking into the breach, CNN said. On Wednesday, the IRS had no immediate comment to the CNN report. |
U.S. military mistakenly ships live anthrax to labs in nine states Posted: 27 May 2015 03:36 PM PDT By Phil Stewart and Sharon Begley WASHINGTON/NEW YORK (Reuters) - A U.S. military facility in Utah mistakenly sent live anthrax bacteria to private laboratories in nine U.S. states and a U.S. military base in South Korea, the Pentagon said on Wednesday. When anthrax becomes airborne, it can cause a deadly illness called inhalation anthrax. |
Colorado cinema gunman's writings show murder plans, musings Posted: 27 May 2015 03:51 PM PDT By Keith Coffman CENTENNIAL, Colo., (Reuters) - A journal that Colorado cinema gunman James Holmes wrote before he opened fire inside a packed theater contains his plans to commit a mass killing, interspersed with personal musings and philosophical questions, a document showed on Wednesday. The writings were introduced by prosecutors in the murder trial of the 27-year-old California native and former neuroscience graduate student who is charged with multiple counts of first-degree murder and attempted murder. Holmes has pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity to fatally shooting 12 moviegoers and wounding 70 more in a suburban Denver theater during a screening of the Batman film "The Dark Knight Rises." Holmes, who could face the death penalty over the July 2012 rampage, mailed a spiral notebook containing the writings to his psychiatrist a day before he launched his attack on the theater. |
Hundreds evacuated in Texas after storms leave at least 15 dead Posted: 27 May 2015 04:19 PM PDT By Jon Herskovitz AUSTIN, Texas (Reuters) - Hundreds of people were ordered to evacuate flood-threatened areas of Texas on Wednesday as storms bringing torrential rains battered the state, where at least 15 people have been killed in weather-related incidents this week, including six in Houston. People were told to stay away from more than 200 homes in Parker County where the Brazos River was poised to overflow its banks about 30 miles (50 km) west of Fort Worth on Wednesday night, county officials said. "The river is coming up fast and flowing at dangerous volumes," Parker County Judge Mark Riley told a news conference, adding shelters were available. |
