Macron under attack as authorities fail to prevent vandalism on the Champs-Elysées Posted: 17 Mar 2019 08:14 AM PDT Emmanuel Macron, the French president, came under attack on Sunday for failing to prevent "yellow vest" protesters from wrecking Paris's grandest avenue, the Champs-Elysées. The centrist president cut short a skiing break in the Pyrenees and flew back to Paris to chair an emergency security meeting, but critics said the resurgence of violence was predictable and he should never have left the capital. Demonstrators smashed nearly every shopfront on the Champs-Elysées, set fire to a bank and torched cars on the 18th consecutive Saturday of protests against Mr Macron's business-friendly economic reforms. Laurent Wauquiez, leader of the main Right-wing opposition party, The Republicans, renewed his call for a state of emergency. "Another Saturday of violence which was left to degenerate in the heart of our capital," Mr Wauquiez tweeted. "It is time to act." Anne Hidalgo, the Socialist mayor of Paris, said: "We are in the midst of a major social and political crisis. We should have been capable of controlling a situation like the one we have just experienced. I'm waiting for explanations from the government." "I want us to analyse things very clearly and take strong decisions very soon so that this does not happen again," he said. Parliament last week passed controversial legislation toughening penalties for violent demonstrators, banning them from covering their faces and allowing police to bar known troublemakers from taking part. However, it has yet to be enforced. Some of Mr Macron's own MPs object to the new law on the grounds that it infringes civil rights. The president has responded by referring it to the Constitutional Council for a ruling on whether it complies with the French constitution. Eric Ciotti, a Republican MP, accused the president of seeking to undermine his own legislation. "This is double-talk. He is endangering our country." The police rejected claims that they had been too soft on the vandals. Stanislas Gaudon, a police union spokesman, said lenient sentences by courts had fostered a sentiment of impunity among protesters. "We've repeatedly seen that those we've risked life and limb to arrest have got off with warnings or suspended sentences. This has to stop." About 200 people arrested during the protest were in custody on Sunday. |
UK Brexit-backing lawmaker says 'a lot of people' still oppose May's deal Posted: 18 Mar 2019 02:03 AM PDT LONDON (Reuters) - A Brexit-supporting British lawmaker said a "lot of people" in parliament still remained opposed to Prime Minister Theresa May's European Union withdrawal deal, with hostility going beyond opposition to the so-called Irish backstop. "This is a very bad agreement," John Redwood told BBC radio. "Quite a number share my overall concerns that we don't need this kind of binding treaty. "It's a lot of people and it goes far wider than the ERG group who have been particularly keen to have the right kind of Brexit," he added. (Reporting by Michael Holden; editing by Kate Holton) |
Dutch police arrest suspect after three shot dead on tram Posted: 18 Mar 2019 02:17 PM PDT Dutch police on Monday arrested a Turkish-born suspect over a shooting on a tram in Utrecht that left three people dead in what officials said was a possible terror attack. Police had earlier launched a huge manhunt for Gokmen Tanis, 37, issuing a picture of the suspected gunman and warning the public not to approach him following the attack, in which five other people were wounded. Mosques and schools were closed across the Netherlands' fourth-largest city following the bloodshed, before heavily armed officers surrounded a building and arrested him. |

Syria army vows to retake control of Kurdish areas Posted: 18 Mar 2019 07:33 AM PDT Syrian government forces will reclaim control of northeastern areas controlled by the US-backed Kurds, whether by force or through reconciliation, the defence minister warned Monday. Marginalised for decades, Syria's minority Kurds have carved out a de-facto autonomous region across some 30 percent of the nation's territory since the devastating war broke out in 2011. Backed by a US-led coalition, Kurdish forces have spearheaded an offensive in Syria against the Islamic State group. |

Mesut Ozil sparks new political row over wedding invite for Turkish president Posted: 18 Mar 2019 07:44 AM PDT The footballer Mesut Özil has become embroiled in a new political row in Germany over reports he asked Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, Turkey's president, to be guest of honour at his wedding. The Arsenal star resigned from the German national team last year claiming he was a victim of racism after coming under fire over his public support for Mr Erdoğan . German politicians spoke out after he was pictured with his fiancee, Amine Gulse, meeting Mr Erdoğan at Istanbul airport last week. "The fact this is still going on will disappoint a lot of football fans, including me," Angela Merkel's chief of staff, Helge Braun, told reporters. Bild, Germany's highest-selling newspaper, carried reports of the wedding invitation on its front page. Last year's extraordinary political row which culminated in one of Germany's biggest football stars quitting the national team began when Özil and Ilkay Gündoğan, another player of Turkish descent, posed for photographs with Mr Erdoğan in London. Özil's decision to pose alongside Mr Erdoğan last year set off a political row that culminated in his retirement from the German national team Credit: KAYHAN OZER/AFP Several Germans were being held in Turkey at the time as part of the regime's crackdown on opposition and press freedom, and the footballer's decision to pose alongside the Turkish president caused widespread public anger in Germany. Many blamed the controversy for Germany's poor performance in the World Cup, and Özil subsequently announced his retirement from the national team on Twitter, writing: "If we win, I'm German. If we lose, I'm an immigrant." A third-generation German whose grandparents immigrated from Turkey, Özil defended his decision to pose with Mr Erdoğan as "respecting the highest office of my family's country". He announced his engagement to Ms Gulse, a former Miss Turkey, earlier this year. "Everyone can invite whoever he likes to his wedding, and of course this also applies to Mesut Özil," said Cem Özdemir of the Green Party, Germany's highest-profile politician of Turkish heritage. "But both current and former national players are role models and must ask themselves whether they live up to that role if they indulge autocrats who enrich themselves at the expense of their country and make their opponents disappear in dungeons. I think that is inappropriate." |

Friday's attack in the city of Christchurch, which Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern labeled terrorism, was the worst ever peacetime mass killing in New Zealand. |
Saudi crown prince approved 'intervention' against dissidents: report Posted: 17 Mar 2019 07:28 PM PDT More than a year before the killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi, Saudi Arabia's powerful Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman approved a secret campaign to silence dissenters, The New York Times reported on Sunday. American officials referred to it as the Saudi Rapid Intervention Group, the Times said. At least some of the clandestine missions were carried out by members of the team that killed and dismembered Khashoggi in October at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul, suggesting his murder was part of a wider campaign against dissidents, the report said, citing the US officials and associates of some Saudi victims. |

France scrambles for police response to 'yellow vest' violence Posted: 18 Mar 2019 06:02 AM PDT The French government's failure to keep Paris protests over the weekend from spiralling out of control has put a harsh spotlight on its law enforcement strategy, which makes avoiding injuries a priority even after hours of rampant destruction and looting. Business owners on the iconic Champs-Elysees avenue were fuming Monday as President Emmanuel Macron met with Interior Minister Christophe Castaner and Justice Minister Nicole Belloubet to weigh their response to an 18th consecutive Saturday of "yellow vest" demonstrations. For decades French authorities have usually preferred the opposite, putting down mass protests with tear gas and rubber bullets but avoiding physical clashes against large groups. |

New Zealand mosque shooter 'acted alone'; sent manifesto to Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern Posted: 17 Mar 2019 12:47 PM PDT Police in New Zealand said on Sunday that the right-wing terrorist behind a massacre at two mosques in Christchurch was acting alone, as it emerged the killer's manifesto had been sent to the country's prime minister minutes before the tragedy unfolded. Australian Brenton Tarrant, 28, sent a racist, rambling manifesto to prime minister Jacinda Ardern in which he denied being linked to any organisations and said he was acting on his own. The document, which praised President Donald Trump and Norwegian mass killer Anders Breivik, was emailed to Ms Ardern's office just 9 minutes before the attack began. However, a senior White House official said it was unfair to cast the shooter as a supporter of President Trump based on one reference to him in the manifesto. Acting chief of staff Mick Mulvaney told "Fox News Sunday" that the shooter was a "disturbed individual" and an "evil person." Mr Mulvaney said attempts to tie the shooter to any American politician "probably ignores some of the deeper difficulties that this sort of activity exposes." It came as a man whose wife was killed in the attack as she rushed back into a mosque to rescue him said he harbours no hatred toward the gunman, insisting forgiveness is the best path forward. "I would say to him 'I love him as a person'," said Farid Ahmad, whose wife Husna Ahmad, 44, was killed at the Al Noor mosque - the first of two targeted by the gunman. "I could not accept what he did. What he did was a wrong thing," he added. A man reacts following the attacks on Friday. Asked if he forgave the 28-year-old white supremacist suspect, he said: "Of course. The best thing is forgiveness, generosity, loving and caring, positivity." Tarrant has also broadcast the massacre live on social media, using a head-mounted camera, which sparked an outcry across the world as platforms such as Facebook were slow to take down the grisly footage. Facebook, YouTube and Twitter had scrambled to take down duplicates of the video at the request of the New Zealand police. The footage showed worshippers being sprayed with bullets, with some trying to crawl away, as Tarrant moved through Al Noor Mosque. A spokesman for Facebook said it had blocked or removed 1.5m copies of the video after the original was streamed online. Traditional media outlets were also criticised for broadcasting lengthy segments of the 16-minute video clip. Sky New Zealand removed Rupert Murdoch-owned Sky News Australia from broadcasts after the channel repeatedly screened extracts of the footage. "We made the decision on Friday with Sky News Australia to replace their live news with sport," Sky New Zealand tweeted on Friday evening. The call was made "to ensure coverage doesn't compromise ongoing investigations in NZ". On Sunday, Ms Ardern said the bodies of those who died were beginning to be returned to their families as of that evening. She said it was expected all would be returned by Wednesday. Two days after the massacre, Dunedin woman Jackie Lawton, 34, said she was "still just overwhelmed and so sad" thinking about the lives lost. She went to a vigil with hundreds of others, held outside Dunedin's Al Huda Mosque on Sunday afternoon. The last time Ms Lawton attended a vigil was in December, to honour slain British backpacker Grace Millane. "When Grace Millane was murdered the whole country mourned, deeply, for weeks. We felt like we knew her, even though she'd been here for such a short time," she said. "This is 50 people though – each one as loved and needed as Grace. This is Grace times 50 and I don't know if we can even process that." Flowers, candles, and messages of solidarity had been placed in front of the mosque and a group sang hymns before performing a haka. Vigils have been held the length of the country over the weekend. Christchurch local James Tawhiti, 41, had driven down to Dunedin on Saturday "because it was too tense and sad and awful." "We've all already been through the earthquakes, that screwed a lot of people up," he said. "But this is somehow worse because it's a man-made tragedy. Natural disasters aren't evil like this and it just feels like we've lost something, maybe our innocence." Three students from Cashmere High School were at the Al Noor Mosque for Friday prayers when the attacker burst in. Two of the students are presumed dead and the third is in the hospital with gunshot wounds. The father of Sayyad Milne, 14, told the New Zealand Herald that his son was last seen lying on the bloody floor of the mosque bleeding from his lower body. "I've lost my little boy. He's just turned 14," he told the newspaper. "I remember him as my baby who I nearly lost when he was born. Such a struggle he's had throughout all his life. He's been unfairly treated but he's risen above that and he's very brave. A brave little soldier. It's so hard ... to see him just gunned down by someone who didn't care about anyone or anything," Milne said. "I know where he is. I know he's at peace." Current students weren't the only ones caught in Friday's mass shootings, the deadliest terrorist attacks in the country's modern history. A former Cashmere High School student is also believed to have been killed, as was the father of another student. Outside the school on Sunday, students came in a trickle to lean bouquets of flowers up against a construction barricade, evidence of the ongoing rebuilding from Christchurch's 2011 earthquake. Principal Mark Wilson said counselors and trauma specialists will be on hand when classes resume at the diverse school of more than 2,000. "I'm very confident in our staff; I'm very confident in our school community. It's made up of awesome people," Wilson said. "It's still going to be hard. There's going to be a lot of grief. There's going to be a lot of sadness. I think we've also got to be very patient with each other." Wilson declined to talk about the boys believed to have been killed, but confirmed three students were at the mosque on Friday and said one remained hospitalized with gunshot wounds to the leg. The principal noted that schools can often be a safe place for children coping with trauma. He is also encouraging students to take up their own acts of love to counteract the tragedy. |
Google’s upcoming Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL look stunning in these new renders Posted: 18 Mar 2019 05:17 AM PDT This is already shaping up to be a very exciting year for smartphone fans. Well, it would be more accurate to say that 2019 is shaping up to be an exciting year for Android smartphone fans. Apple's upcoming new iPhone 11 handsets are pretty much expected to be another round of "S" upgrades at this point. According to reports from the most accurate Apple insider on the planet, Apple's is sticking to the same notch design it introduced back in 2017 for this year's new iPhone models. They'll sport new cameras and some other new features along with performance upgrades, but the look will supposedly be about the same. Meanwhile, Android phone makers have finally decided to stop copying Apple -- for now, at least -- and come up with some exciting new designs of their own.Smartphone makers are trying all sorts of new ways to inch closer to all-screen smartphone designs. They're all stopgap solutions to tide us over while we wait for nifty new tech that allows cameras and other sensors to be hidden out of sight underneath a phone's display. In the meantime, companies are launching phones with pop-up cameras, slide-out cameras, and hole-punch cameras like the new Galaxy S10 line. It's that last design Google reportedly ended up choosing for its Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL, and now the company's supposed leaked designs for its Pixel 4 lineup have been mocked up in fantastic new renders.Last week, a leaked sketch was said to have revealed the design of Google's upcoming Pixel 4 XL flagship phone. The sketch seemed a bit, well, sketchy... but subsequent reports suggested that it might be accurate. Now, a graphic designer who goes by @PhoneDesigner on Twitter took the ball and ran with it, using that leak and other rumors to mock up Google's new Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL smartphones. In a word, the look stunning.https://twitter.com/PhoneDesigner/status/1106640786848911361https://twitter.com/PhoneDesigner/status/1106641399846498304https://twitter.com/PhoneDesigner/status/1106646117674958848Here's a closer look at a few of those images:As you can see, there are two slightly different designs Google is rumored to be using this year. The smaller Pixel 4 is said to have a single-lens rear camera along with a single-lens selfie camera. Meanwhile, the larger Pixel 4 XL is shown with a dual-lens selfie camera, and it's believed to be Google's first Pixel phone with a dual-lens rear camera. Both new handsets will reportedly make use of the new "hole-punch" camera design, where round or oblong holes are cut out of the screen to make room for front-facing camera lenses. It takes up less screen real estate than the traditional notch design Apple popularized with the iPhone X, so the results have higher screen-to-body ratios.Google's new Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL designs have yet to be confirmed, but Android fans are in for a real treat if these concept renders end up being accurate. Google has historically been way behind the times with its Pixel phone designs, but a Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL that looks like these phones would fit perfectly among other phones that will be released this year. Google isn't expected to launch its new Pixel 4 lineup until sometime in October, however, so we have quite a while to wait before the phones' designs are confirmed. |

Russian flags flew in the main city of Simferopol while posters celebrating Crimea's "return to its native land" hung in shop windows and on public transport. Putin used the visit to officially open two new power stations on the Black Sea peninsula, which was almost wholly dependent on electricity from Ukraine before the annexation. |

Our story on the best online mattresses crowned Nectar as the best mattress for comfort. Here's why: 1. The top layer is made of quilted gel memory foam that contours to your body and provides extra loft. 2. The middle layer is Nectar's patented Lush Foam that evenly distributes your weight and offers the perfect combo of firm and soft that Nectar is known for. 3. The bottom layer is an adaptive hi-core memory foam that supports your body and prevents sinking.Compared to Casper, Nectar provides about one more inch of memory foam, making it extra cushioned for people who need back support or have sharp pressure points. The three layers are cocooned between a temperature control cover and a breathable base layer to circulate air and wick away heat, even on the sweatiest nights.
