What happens if Syria blows the cease-fire deadline?

Posted:

In this Friday, April 6, 2012 photo, Free Syrian Army fighters gather on a corner during fighting with Syrian troops in a suburb of Damascus, Syria. Syrian government shelling and offensives against rebel-held towns killed dozens of people across the country on Saturday, activists said, as the U.S. posted online satellite images of troop deployments that cast further doubt on whether the regime intends to comply with an internationally sponsored peace plan. (AP Photo)All eyes will be on Syria tomorrow as the country promises to "cease all military fighting throughout Syrian territory as of 6 a.m." If the pledge is broken, it will be mean the collapse of the United Nations peace plan brokered by special envoy Kofi Annan. It will also mean the peace process was exploited by Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to continue killing rebels and civilians. But what are the actual consequences of blowing the U.N. deadline? We asked the Brookings Institution's Daniel Byman, director of research at the Saban Center for Middle East Policy. ...

Titanic's sinking: Was it more than human folly?

Posted:

FILE - In this Aug. 17, 2005 file photo, a small boat makes its way through the icebergs in Disko Bay, Greenland. An entire century, two high-profile government investigations and countless books and movies have passed, yet we're still looking for and debating what really caused the Titanic to hit an iceberg and sink on that crystal-clear chilly night. Physicists Donald Olson and Russell Doescher at Texas State University said that a few months earlier, the moon, sun and Earth lined up in a way that adds extra pull on Earth's tides along with the Earth being its closest to the moon in 1,400 years. The unusual tides caused glaciers to calve icebergs off Greenland. Those southbound icebergs got stuck near Labrador and Newfoundland but then slowly moved south again, floating into the shipping currents just in time to greet the Titanic, the astronomers theorized.
