Newtown victims' families sue maker of gun used in 2012 attack Posted: 15 Dec 2014 01:40 PM PST By Scott Malone BOSTON (Reuters) - The families of nine people killed in a 2012 massacre at a Newtown, Connecticut, elementary school sued the maker of the gun used in the attack on Monday, saying the weapon should not have been sold because it had no reasonable civilian purpose. While the AR-15 assault weapon used in the attack on Sandy Hook Elementary School was legally sold in Connecticut, the lawsuit contends that the weapon should not have been available to 20-year-old gunman Adam Lanza. Tsarnaev, 21, is charged with killing three people and injuring more than 260 with two homemade pressure-cooker bombs left at the race's crowded finish line on April 15, 2013. Amazon hit by pre-Christmas strike in Germany Posted: 15 Dec 2014 08:14 AM PST Workers went on strike at German sites of Amazon Monday to increase pressure on the US online retail giant during the busy Christmas period in a long-running pay dispute. Around 2,300 employees took part in the work stoppage at five of the company's nine distribution centres in Germany, the services sector union Verdi said. "The employees are increasing the pressure on Amazon," Verdi's Stefanie Nutzenberger said, accusing Amazon of a "blockade attitude". Amazon said it would still deliver on time and pointed out that only a minority of employees were taking part. |

Miss South Africa Rolene Strauss crowned Miss World Posted: 14 Dec 2014 02:11 PM PST Miss South Africa, 22-year-old Rolene Strauss, was crowned Miss World 2014 at the contest's glitzy final in London on Sunday, with an estimated billion viewers watching on television around the globe. Miss Hungary, Edina Kulcsar, was judged the runner-up and Miss United States, Elizabeth Safrit, came third in the 64th annual competition, contested by women from 121 countries. Medical student Strauss clasped her hands together in surprise and was crowned by the outgoing Miss World, Megan Young of the Philippines, to huge cheers in the ExCeL exhibition centre.
